You hear all the time, “they’re not qualified to be president.” So, what qualifies one to be president of the United States?

Strictly and Constitutionally speaking, only this:

Article II Section 1 Clause 5:
No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

Apparently you have to be a thief, liar, and a sociopath. That’s just a minimum.

35 years old, a natural citizen and the vote of the majority of the Electoral College (which presumably represents the majority of voters).

That’s what qualifies a President, nothing else.

Oh and you have to have been either a tweeker or used coke extensively and run away from your military commitment. And having sex with children is also a requirement but I think that one is way down the list as they are all having sex with children.

Incorrrect, Anon. The Electorial College has nothing to do with the ELIGIBILITY for President. To be ELECTED, yes, but not to be eligible.

Get it?

Great question.

It depends on what we think a president is I suppose.

Today we think a president is a king, the heck with congress or the judicial branch. Take a poll of 1,200 hand picked people to get the pulse of the nation!

Sign that executive order!

Whatever the owners deem appropriate.

Did you not read the question?

:So, what qualifies one to be president of the United States?:

Eligibility to be President was not the question, being President was.

Almost all the posters here are “eligible” to become President, the reason we are not is we do not have the qualification of having been elected.

@Anon, being “qualified” is a prerequisite. Getting elected is a result or outcome, not a qualification.

And qualification is subjective.

Rise Up,

You seem to be changing your position, a problem understanding the English language maybe?

FYI from http://www.dictionary.com/browse/subjective

adjective
1.
existing in the mind; belonging to the thinking subject rather than to the object of thought (opposed to objective).

You realize that after getting elected you are not President yet, you do not become President till you are sworn in and being elected qualifies you to be sworn in.

Or would you argue that only being the President elect is what qualifies you since it “qualifies” you to become President by being sworn in?

Either way you are agreeing with my original statement. You “qualify” by meeting the requirements to be sworn in as President.
