That’s the way I took your question IS. Despite the evidence, I believe they are sentient beings that can think and rationalize like we can. With that said, their thinking and rationalization is more akin to religion whose titular head is man as opposed to God. In other words, they are true believers which cannot be persuaded with logic. Ever.
That is why the academics, esp economists and gender studies types, are for big government, only way to stay employed and have some clout.

My son is 25 and was for a while a Bernie supporter. Thought Ol’ Bern was going to change the world, make college free, and make all the bad Republicans go away.
Then I asked him “Where will the money come from so college is ‘free’?” To which he answered “the government”. So I said, well, where does the government get it’s money? He answered “the people”. Correct! So then we talked about how many people ACTUALLY pay taxes, which is shrinking. I said “you know how you can’t find a good-paying job in your field? Well, multiply that by hundreds of thousands of people. Then take the other thousands and thousands who haven’t ever held a job, and are actually a negative on the economy because they TAKE and produce nothing. So where are these magical dollars going to come from?” To which he said “well rich people can pay more”. And I said “if you were rich, living in this country, would you vote to pay more? Would you stay here and pay more?” He had no answer.
You didn’t have the heart to tell him about the $19,5000,000,000,000 of debt that he and his children will be saddled with?
Explain that to pay off just one trillion dollars of debt at the rate of one million dollars per day would take a little over 2739 YEARS with no days off.
