Pew Poll: Majority of Europeans Fear Refugees Will Bring More Terrorism

It’s like everyone’s birthday came early…. The only thing that kind of blew my mind is that France’s number is below 50%. It’s like the entire nation is suicidal. Either that or the Muslim population is so high at this stage that they are tipping the scales in the polls. Either way – it is evident there’s not much hope for the French.

A new Pew study proves the obvious: the majority of Europeans are leery of incoming refugees, fearing their presence will bring terrorism and undue burden on their respective countries’ resources.

Nearly one-and-a-half million migrants and refugees have flooded Europe since last year and the Pew study concluded that many Europeans “are concerned that the influx of refugees will increase the likelihood of terrorism and impose a burden on their countries.”

Pew studied 10 European countries including Sweden, Hungary, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK, among others. While citizens of Hungary and Poland are discernibly the most wary of refugees, with 76 percent and 71 percent expressing concern, respectively, the remaining European countries polled were not far behind.

In fact, of all 10 countries surveyed, a median 59 percent of Europeans are concerned that refugees will bring more terrorism. That means even in the countries most bent on embracing multiculturalism — like Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and the UK — a majority of citizens are fed up. The 10 EU countries that make up the survey include: France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden and the UK.

A majority in eight of 10 of the EU countries surveyed believe that “refugees will increase the likelihood of terrorism in our country,” with Hungary (76%) and Poland (71%) having the largest percentage of respondents who say this.

“Around six-in-ten in Germany (61%), the Netherlands (61%) and Italy (60%) also think refugees will increase terrorism in their country,” says Pew, and slightly smaller majorities in Sweden (57%), Greece (55%) and the UK (52%) seem to agree.

France (46%) and Spain (40%) had the smallest percentage of respondents who answered that “refugees will increase the likelihood of terrorism in our country.” The two countries, France and Spain, were the only countries with a majority of respondents answering that “refugees will not increase the likelihood of terrorism in our country,” at 51 percent and 55 percent respectively.

CNS notes that the Pew study was conducted prior to the spate of terror attacks that ravaged France and Germany this past summer. Needless to say, the poll’s findings might actually be underrepresented here.

Despite the loud and clear message Europeans are sending to the world, and particularly to their respective governments, it is for naught. Their feelings and their safety is inconsequential to Western leaders bent on taking in all comers, regardless of the threats they may pose. As French president Manuel Valls told his people: you’re just going to “have to learn to live with terrorism.”
