The US Healthcare System Summed Up In 1 Stunning Bill

Tyler Durden's picture

While the cost of US healthcare is often said to be “an arm and a leg”, thanks to this gentleman’s knife-wielding accident, America’s doctors bring a whole new meaning to the term being “given the finger…”

“The most bonkers medical bill I’ve ever received. Cut my finger chopping veggies, got a few stitches. Dr took 45 min, billed insurance $14k.”

h/t @odavis_

$14k for some stitches in a finger… well at least he paid his “fair share.”

The ACA has a gizzillion codes for every imaginable medical procedure and then some. You can see them on that image under each item.

Fucking clusterfuck way to provide health services.

A friend of mine cut her finger. It was a pretty good cut and she went to a walk-in clinic to see if it needed stitches. It didn’t, but they put a butterfly bandage on it. .. and billed her $5,000.00.

The whole healthcare system has turned into a giant skimming operation. That is the root of the problem.

The reality is that the doctor will get paid about 200 bucks. What insurance is billed is fairy dust. It doesn’t matter. Insurers will assess what was done, throw out (deny) most of those codes, and pay what is the contracted rate for the approved service. The shame is that people don’t see this and are given the impression that filthy rich doctors get paid ten thousand bucks for five minutes’ work. They would be shocked to see what really happens. I wish there was not this stupid game that needed to be played with the middlemen (insurers, administrators) taking the lions share of the health care dollar and leaving the providers with the blame.

Don’t give me that crap that the doc’s are just good guys and the system is the problem. They are 100% complicit in the mess we have today and are taking their patients to the cleaners.

We don’t have “independent” doc’s anymore. They work for big health care co’s. that instruct them to run up these bills. I personally know doctors and have been told they aren’t allowed to code in something simple like “applied band-aid” and charge a std. office visit. They run up a bill often erroneously, the ins. co. kicks it down to this side of stupidity, we all pay.

Oh, and starting salary of a doctor…$150K or more…STARTING. That isn’t experienced doc pay. I can see higher than average but starting above a level most middle income earners will never achieve in a lifetime is ridiculous. Doctors are not titans of industry and I’m sick of people thinking they walk on water.

We are on the retired military plan through Humana, which is called Tricare. That is exactly how it works and has for years… the medical provider bills for every possible code they hope might get through and the tricare agent denies every single one except the one they approved.

One time, when I had to have emergency surgery and a lengthy ICU time after, the hospital had to write off almost a half million dollars! Woo Hoo! My care was discounted $500,000! Where did that coupon come from? Not Reader’s Digest.

Honk if you get that.

I am curious about the tax implications of the massive “write offs” from hospitals. For example, if they bill $100,000.00 for a procedure which would reasonably cost $10,000.00, do they get to count that as a $90,000.00 loss when the insurance company pays them that $10,000?

Trump will work to get this mess straightened out and make healthcare actually affordable and available to the majority of the people again.

Hillary will do the opposite and work to make it stronger and less accountable or responsive,

So if you are unhappy with the current system vote Trump, he has your best interests at heart.

But if you’re happy with the current system vote Hillary, she has her best interests at heart.

Your choice.

Since this ACA disaster was foisted upon us, I have not gone to see “my dr.” because I am not sick, and I don’t need urgent care.

now I am getting letters from my insurance company, requesting that I go get my annual checkup. wtf. since when does a third party ask you to go see a dr.

looks like the whole system is failing. I can only hope an pray Trump will disembowel this evil act of taxation without representation, posing as mandatory insurance.

I got attacked and bitten by a very large stray dog in Dunmore, PA (Scranton area). Knowing rabies is fatal in humans I drove myself to Geisinger Hospital and under the advice of the E R staff was treated ‘as if’ the dog had rabies. I received 7 shots that evening and returned 3 more times to finish up the rabies vaccine. A few weeks later I received a bill for $ 42,000.00 (YES 42 K) and change ! WTF is that shit ? The rabies shots were almost 4,000 per each shot. The initial E R visit was over 13,000.00. They must be using the ‘NEW MATH’ when calculating these bills.
