QUOTES OF THE DAY

“No man will ever bring out of that office the reputation which carries him into it. The honeymoon would be as short in that case as in any other, and its moments of ecstasy would be ransomed by years of torment and hatred.”

Thomas Jefferson

“No man who ever held the office of president would congratulate a friend on obtaining it.”

John Adams

“I’ll be damned if I am not getting tired of this. It seems to be the profession of a President simply to hear other people talk. ”

William Howard Taft

“The President was trapped – and with nearly every president, it had come about from his own words. Presidential promises and statements… The people had this annoying way of remembering them. And even if they didn’t, there were journalists and political rivals never passed on a chance to make the necessary reminders.”

Tom Clancy, Clear and Present Danger

I think Trump will soon learn that campaigning to be President was a lot more fun than being President.
While many of his promises were contradictory (eg. abortion, gun control, free trade) there are high expectations among his poorer supporters that he will improve their lot, and within his term. Reopening shuttered factories and mines in the rust belt will not be easy or quick.
Even a Republican congress will strongly resist any attempt to clean up “donor politics” – pigs rarely vote for emptier troughs.
As for reducing bureaucracy, many have tried, few have succeeded.
Good luck to Mr. Trump, he’s going to need it.

Oh, I don’t know. Obama seemed to enjoy the big airplane, the band, the golf games, and the continued campaigning more than the job. Of course, his inattention to the job showed up in a continuing series of catastrophes.
