Stucky QOTD: Movies in Plato’s Cave

I was driving around for a few hours yesterday doing errands, and I heard an interesting interview on one of the Sirius news stations.  The person being interview was Irina Margareta, a Romanian lady who dubbed over 3,000 movies.

You can read about her in this short article  “VHS vs Communism”, which also contains a brief interview.

https://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/18/opinion/vhs-vs-communism.html?_r=0

The Romanian dick tator, Nicolae Ceausescu (try spelling that without googling), absolutely loathed the West.  He hated the decadent capitalist culture — especially movies.  Irina said a VCR player in those days cost as much as a car!

The only capitalist pig TV series he allowed was “Dallas”, and that only because he believed it accurately portrayed what fucken capitalist pigs we are.  BTW, he offered Larry Hagman some big bucks to appear on a commercial billboard in Bucharest … and, Hagman accepted!  What a two faced cocksucker!

Anyway, if I heard correctly  I was driving), I believe she said that the ONLY western-made movie he allowed into the country was Sound Of Music.  I think that’s hilarious.

 photo Sound of Music.jpg

So, as I was driving I thought that would make a good question of the day. Let’s combine in with Plato’s shadows.

PREMISE:   You have a friend who lives in a cave – a modern cave with electricity and a DVD player. This person will never leave the cave. This person will never have any access to books, newspapers, or any other info regarding the outside world.  EVERYTHING you want this person to know about the world outside the cave will be determined by you. You get to decide the topic; morals, religion, economics, history, sports …. whatever.

Q1:  What topic would you choose?

Q2:  Which ONE  movie would you choose? …. (One, and only one movie)

Q3:  (Optional)  Regarding the same topic you chose …. which television show?

@ Iska

I saw you praise “A Confederacy of Dunces” on another thread here weeks ago. You said something like “why read or write any other book”, or similar? Anyway, I am reading it for the first time now. For whatever reason it slipped off my radar all of these years. I’m now about a third of the way through and am enjoying it. To me, so far, it reads like an enhanced literary version of a Joseph Wambaugh novel. It’s pretty funny.

That’s messed up, Unread. I particularly love the part where he tears into those old ladies with their art gallery. I’m reminded of that scene every time I come here and a bunch of contards have been busy posting smug comments blaming libtards.

Rush Limpdick got a little tiresome talking about libs and cons. He thoroughly brainwashed a generation of morans who were looking for somebody to blame for all their ills. The damn contards have no idea of their own, they are regimented dupes of the military industrial complex.

The wheel of fortune turns and by turning it takes out and then brings characters back into the story. The old man, the bartender and even the cop disappears and reappears after a couple of pages. In the case of the silent bartender, near the end, Lana tells potential customers that the mixologist will mix a cocktail to their exact specifications. Jones disappears and re-appears on cue. The cop does the same and, at length, so does the Minx.

Then there are persons unseen. The Levy girls, Mrs Levy’s mom, Gloria, Ableman, the drunk foreman, the priest, the theater manager, and many others who have a minor scene but are nonetheless important. We never see Miss Annie but she plays an important part in filling us in on the history of Ignatius and his girlfriend.

The author is also unseen but he takes us on a tour of NO and plays a sort of Inspector Columbo, disclosing little clues for us along the way. The clues leave you wondering if Ignatius is to Toole as Emma was to Flaubert (as he claimed).

Another question I have is this: Does the author pull a fast one and retcon the entire narrative in the final scene with Ig and the Minx? In that scene, Ignatius denies everything and condenses the story to a simple love-sick tale of woe. What do you think is plausible, Unconfused?

I have to withhold comment for now since I’m only a little more than 1/3 done with the book. But that said, I find your commentary (and query) interesting above.

Another problem I have is that I borrowed the book from my local library and it’s due back Feb 7th. I can’t reup because someone else has it on hold. This means I don’t think I’ll be able to finish it by then, so, I’ll probably order it today from Amazon via the TBP link.

I don’t mind though because it seems like a book I want to own anyway and this way TBP will also get the 6% from Jeff Bezos.

My CAVE/SLAVE (this actually describes all of us in the world) would be spoon feed a constant stream of info that stated he was free and could make his own choices. That’s how you get them, make them BELIEVE they are free. The topic, Politics of coarse.

The movie would be “The Bible” to give him hope that there is a divine being on his side and looking over him.

The tv show would be something on the order of “The Simpsons” or “Dancing with the Tards” to keep the poor schmuck bedazzled and dumbed down so he will never figure out he is captive in a cave.

That sounds so kinky. So the guy in the cave is a dumb negro?
And your showing him fancy magazine ads to inspire him to consumerism like Burma Jones?

I heard that same woman interviewed (or did I read it?) about 7 or 8 years ago and I found it profoundly entertaining. Great catch.

Good question, too.

Just leave him alone.

Someone stupid enough to get himself stuck in a cave and live there in ignorance without looking for a way out on his own deserves to be there.

That documentary about the Ceausescu regime’s ban on Western films and the widespread use of pirate movies is called “Chuck Norris Vs Communism” and it’s on Netflix. I highly recommend it.

Authorities were very lax in allowing pirated movies to flourish in the Romanian underground and this was done without the top communist leadership to know about it. I guess they thought it harmless. But the people had an insatiable hunger for Western films and documentaries. They learned that the regime’s propaganda about the West was total bullshit. One day, many millions came out to the main squares and overthrew the regime. Ceausescu and his wife were strung up and killed.

I don’t believe in controlling people so I’d probably teach him to read, give him innerwebz access and give him a dictionary because every book ever written is already in the dictionary. In that way he could enlighten himself…….or not.
