SVARGA LOKA QOTD

Submitted by Svarga Loka

I decided to create an individual home school program for our children entitled “English literature through film”. The idea is to watch high quality movies with our children, both classic and modern, as they enter adolescence and young adulthood, in the hopes of triggering fruitful family discussions, covering works of literature that they should be familiar with, promote critical thinking, teach about historical events or pop culture, be funny or interesting in some way. The target age would be 14-18 years old.

My list so far:
Dead poets society
The Truman show
One flew over the cuckoo’s nest

Meta-Movie Man

Guest Post by The Zman

They say art holds a mirror up to society, which means something becomes art when it reveals the nature of society or just nature itself. The classical nude statues are art, rather than pornography, because they are idealized representations created to celebrate the human form. Literature becomes art when it portrays society in such a way that it reveals certain truths about the age. For example, The Great Gatsby is art, because it captures the age and the reality of materialism.

HOW MANY SAXES ARE THERE?

By: Steve Candidus (Steve C.)

That’s Saxes, as in saxophones.

Overview:

Invented by Adolphe Sax and patented in 1846 they are classified as a single reed mouthpiece instrument usually made of brass. They fall into the woodwind family of musical instruments and there are more of them than you might think.

Five Insights Gleaned From The Movie “Unplanned”

By Doug “Uncola” Lynn via TheBurningPlatform.com

Over the weekend, I was where I needed to pass some time and thought an early afternoon matinee would do the trick. Although I was not overly enthused to see any of the films currently showing, I chose to see Unplanned.  Mainly because the title seemed apropos just then and the movie’s starting time fit my schedule. Moreover, it looked to be a political film about the controversial subject of abortion and was, in fact, based on a true story.

The tale told of the life and times of Abby Johnson, a headstrong young lady from Texas who became one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors in the United States. She resigned in 2009 after seeing a fetus at 13 weeks gestation recoil in pain during an ultrasound-guided vacuum aspiration abortion.

The film portrayed the abortion industry, as exactly that, an industry whereby Planned Parenthood profited most from procedures terminating pregnancies; even to the point of demanding quotas from its clinics. Furthermore, distinct and contrasting parallels were drawn between those who believed they were advocating on behalf of women’s rights with those who believed life began at conception.

Netflix’s ‘Bird Box’ Contains Clear Coding on Continuing in Cataclysms

By Doug “Uncola” Lynn via TheBurningPlatform.com

A recent Netflix original movie has taken America by storm. The film is called “Bird Box”, starring Sandra Bullock.  The online streaming service claimed it was viewed by more than 45 million accounts during the first seven days after its release; the best week ever for a Netflix film.  Although I was, initially, hesitant to write about it, it’s now become such a big deal, I’m compelled to add my proverbial two cents.

The film became available for streaming on December 21, 2018 and since that time, it has propagated as a viral topic of conversation, instantaneously, online and in three dimensions. My kids mentioned it over Christmas break and the discussion continued to expand by means of social media, internet memes, and a plethora of articles both in print and throughout the electronic interwebs.

Stucky QOTD: Movies in Plato’s Cave

I was driving around for a few hours yesterday doing errands, and I heard an interesting interview on one of the Sirius news stations.  The person being interview was Irina Margareta, a Romanian lady who dubbed over 3,000 movies.

You can read about her in this short article  “VHS vs Communism”, which also contains a brief interview.

https://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/18/opinion/vhs-vs-communism.html?_r=0

The Romanian dick tator, Nicolae Ceausescu (try spelling that without googling), absolutely loathed the West.  He hated the decadent capitalist culture — especially movies.  Irina said a VCR player in those days cost as much as a car!

The only capitalist pig TV series he allowed was “Dallas”, and that only because he believed it accurately portrayed what fucken capitalist pigs we are.  BTW, he offered Larry Hagman some big bucks to appear on a commercial billboard in Bucharest … and, Hagman accepted!  What a two faced cocksucker!

Hacksaw Ridge: When Pacifism Made Peace With War

One of our most esteemed readers, RiNS, suggested or ordered me to do a movie review on Hacksaw Ridge. Yessir! I don’t do movie reviews so I thought I’d give it a shot and see how it works out.

The movie in a nutshell.  It tells the true story of Desmond T. Doss, a young man from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia who served as a medic during World War II. As a Seventh Day Adventist, and also the legacy of violence from his veteran father, Doss refuses to even pick up a gun. However, he feels guilt that he gets to stay home while his brethren are fighting the war, so he enlists. Eventually, the military brass allow him to go to battle unarmed as a medic. In the process he literally saves about 75 wounded American soldiers, which eventually earns him the Medal of Honor.

How Do I Wean Myself From The Raging Bullshit?

I already won’t watch ANY movies with certain shitfuk actors; Alec Baldwin, Cher, Danny Glover, Streisand, Julia Roberts, Susan Sarandon, all the Sheens … for starters.

Now, I must and will add DeNiro to the list. Dammit.  I really liked him in a lot (not all) of his movies.  But, he’d done. Toast. Finito. Out of my life. People who don’t know me just don’t know how serious I am. When I’m finally done with something, I am truly DONE! (Not as if he would give a flying fuck.)  So long, DiNiro, you piece of shit.  BTW, I would give my left testicle to punch YOU in your face!

It’s actually only 55 seconds long … it’s played twice, back to back.

I’m in a conundrum. I absolutely LOVE movies …. ever since I was a kid, seeing TWO shows, plus a cartoon …. for 35 cents.
