Cyberattacks & the Vulnerability of a Cashless Society

Guest Post by Martin Armstrong

The WannaCry ransom attack is actually variant from a February 2015 sample attributed to the Lazarus Group, a Kaspersky-tracked actor tied to the North Korean government. Parts of the code go beyond shared code. It appears to be written by the same programmer.

Let’s get something straight here. At the core of those responsible is really the NSA and Microsoft itself. The attack exploited a Windows networking protocol to spread within networks, and while Microsoft released a patch nearly two months ago, it’s become very clear that patch didn’t reach all users particularly because institutions often do not install patches fearing that proprietary software may not function.

If behind the curtain we have government demanding back-doors into iPhones and computer so they can listen to everything everywhere, well guess what – so can everyone else. Patches will work for individual users, but not major institutions. Trying to upgrade their operations is a real effort. They are slow to act and thus vulnerable.

The NSA was well aware of this little trick. The real answer is the NSA and FBI must do investigation the old fashion way. Stop asking for secret back-doors that never remain secret very long. The entire world will become vulnerable and they use to counterfeit an adversary’s currency to undermine their economy. Today, if we keep this nonsense up, they will hack into the entire thing and shut it down.

The idea of moving to a cashless society is just insane. Somebody has to give up something here. Trust me – the intelligence community will not take responsibility.

I’m not even an informed laymen on the topic but I am more concerned about nuclear power plants or just the electric grid being hacked than I am about the financial system. Governments can impose a ‘bank holiday’ if necessary and banks can, in a pinch, go back to clearing checks. Even corporate chains could create a temporary IOU system for purchases should credit cards not work or cash be in short supply.

Unfortunately, as Chernobyl and Fukushima have shown, once control over a nuclear power plant is lost there is no going back. For this reason I would require all nuclear power plants have mechanical and analogue control systems that cannot be operated remotely. No microprocessors or software allowed on reactors!

Unit,

You are entirely correct.
Unfortunately, there is no common sense or concern
for the good of the country, the health of the people,
or the responsibility to the next generation.

The gov has a million regulations to screw a guy with
massive fines if he collects a barrel of water for his
geranium plants or for scooping a fish out of HIS stream.
Outdated nuke plants, buried waste, and underground
explosions and implosions…who cares?

There is an unending supply of $ for the already rich
but the basic person can /should just suicide and get
the hell out of here. Or, lately, OD on the on hand opium
shite.

I realize I am playing, “ain’t it awful” but it is very awful.

My uneducated guess is that an outdated nuclear plant may be less dangerous than an updated nuclear plant – if the update is a computer update that is designed by a youngster and utilizes the internet. A general attribute of the young is to favor the novel. “Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke” is a mindset that develops with age after seeing perfectly good things “fixed” until they are broke. What kind of special idiocy and naïveté do you have to have to think touch screen voting could be a good thing, for example?

you’re right…you are a layman. you need not worry about your “bank holiday”, what you need to worry about is the length of time of this disruption. Supply chains are all run on tech and are all order on demand such that any place carries only a couple days of supply on hand…even grocery stores and gas stations. This couple of days of supplies runs out in hours in an emergency or if a panic runs through the masses…
oh..and the MILLIONS that are on govt welfare, sure, I just know that they would patiently wait for their EBT cards and WIC checks to work… there would be no theft or riots. /sarc
IF the financial system was collapsed due to a computer virus and it hit govt entities and shops (ie fed ex got hit in the wannacry) and it last for more than 48hours you would see neighborhoods begin to collapse and nuclear plants would be the last thing on your mind if you lived remotely close to an urban area that has govt subsidy recipients.

If there is a false flag cyber attack because the government is trying to control us, there will be no clearing of checks, cash withdrawals, or unauthorized credit cards, and it will all be blamed on the Russians, Chinese, or international or domestic terrorists. Which would come first, a disruption in power, water, transportation, or banking? That is anyone’s guess.
If you don’t have some cash on hand, you will be completely at their mercy.
If cash is outlawed, then what?

Do you want gold and silver in hand or crypto-currency to store your liquid assets? The vulnerability to cyber attacks is the Achilles along with the unlimited access to keep creating more crypto varieties, in turn potentially creating volatility of value between brands. This techno digitization BEAST will be out to destroy individual asset control first, and your soul next

I don’t believe for a minute that this was some rogue group demanding bitcoin ransom. We already know the NSA and others can blame viruses on some other country. I do believe that this kind of Guerrilla warfare is the only method that will be effective against them for the foreseeable future. Scooter summed it up well.

Relax-all your problems are about to go away.
Ebola is back, and though the article does not state so,we all know that cash has lots of germs, thus the need for a cashless society.

Just noticed that Saker posted an article today about this very topic. Good short read. This and weapons analysis is what he is good at.

I’m not an expert, but this wannacry is called ransomware for a reason, the people who are responsible want a ransom.

So, when you pay the ransom, you have to send the money to someone, a bank account, web address, PayPal, etc.

Wouldn’t it then be easy to know who the perpetrators are and arrest them?

Oh, there I go thinking logically again, never mind, it was our Government/NSA, which is why they spun the story of having a secret cut off switch so they wouldn’t be affected!
