Project Baltimore, an investigative reporting series conducted by a local Fox affiliate in Baltimore City, has sifted through over a decade of high school records and discovered that attendance at city high schools in 2017 suddenly dropped to a 13-year low of just 76%. Just to state the obvious, the average high school in Maryland has around 1,200 students so that means that, on an average day, nearly 300 of them don’t bother to show up.
Adding insult to injury, Baltimore City Police Spokesman T.J. Smith told Fox 45 that it’s no coincidence that violent crime is spiking in the city just as more and more teenagers are opting to skip class.

From violent attacks on Halloween night, to a terrifying carjacking and a man pushed into the Inner Harbor. Baltimore City is under siege by criminals that, police say, are teenagers.
“Every single one of them involve juveniles, who are all walking the streets today because they are probably not in school, where they belong.”
Meanwhile, Project Baltimore found that 39% of Baltimore City high school students were technically considered “chronically absent,” a threshold that should result in fines or even jail time for parents…that is, if school administrators actually fulfilled their reporting requirements.
As we kept digging, we discovered this: In Baltimore City, 39 percent of high school students are considered chronically absent, or truant, by missing more than 20 days. That’s 8,400 teenagers who regularly are not going to school.
“Hearing that number, that’s a lot of young people who could have something to do during those hours that might be on the street doing something they shouldn’t be doing,” said Smith.
If a child between 5 and 18-years-old doesn’t go to school, state truancy laws hold parents accountable with up to $500 in fines or jail time.
Of course, as we noted previously, another Fox 45 investigation found that truant kids are being routinely passed through Baltimore City schools even if they don’t bother to show up for a single day of class during an entire school year (see: “It’s Very Common”: Baltimore Teacher Admits To Passing Students That Never Showed For A Single Day Of Class)
But this teacher says grade changing at Calverton goes much further than just taking a failing grade and making it a 60. Some students who pass, according to this educator, don’t even have grades because they’ve never showed up to class.
“There were students on my roster all year that I had never met, had never seen. On paper they passed my class and passed onto the next year.”
“I love my job and I love my students,” concluded the teacher. “I want to see the students at Calverton and other schools across the city, get a fresh start. And it’s going to be hard because the students are used to this now. But the students deserve better and our city deserve better.”
And, lest you think a 76% attendance rate is ‘normal’, surrounding counties were found to be over 90%.
Not surprisingly, when asked about the excessive absences, a local high school in Baltimore City responded with nothing more than a generic sentence, undoubtedly drafted by an expensive, taxpayer-funded attorney, regarding the importance of regular attendance.
With nearly 40 percent of all city high schoolers truant, Fox45 asked North Avenue if it’s enforcing state law by reporting parents to police. We didn’t get an answer. Instead, we got a statement:
“Strong attendance is essential for students’ success, and the district has a longstanding commitment to ensuring that barriers to attendance are removed.” – Baltimore City Public Schools
The statement lists steps the District has taken to get kids to school, which include fostering strong relationships, providing laundry services, on-site childcare and running a re-engagement center to recruit dropped outs.
Of course, despite their poor attendance records, we’re almost certain that Baltimore City students will have unlimited access to $1,000 of dollars worth of student loans to attend whatever institution of higher indoctrination their hearts desire upon graduation in just a few short years…
You need IQ based education. Kids with IQs substantially below the norm will fall behind and eventually quit.
The IQ has been bred out of them via. Government programs that Reward low IQ mothers to have more babies.
Prior to the “Great Society”, the segregated black schools of the south had high attendance and graduation rates. PLUS the graduates could speak English, calculate their weekly pay, and read the IRS tax forms.
They also had a lower rate of single-parent homes and a much lower crime rate.
Thank you Big Government.
What can you do with neegrows with an IQ of a cinder block?
Question: are these increasingly frequent crimes by school age youths taking place in broad daylight during school hours? Most likely they are in the evening or night when school would not be in session. So what is the connection between crime and truancy? Unless it is that youths sleep at home during hours they are supposed to be in school in order to be fully refreshed for nocturnal adventures. Furthermore, could they not sleep in class or if the didn’t they would they further impede the meager learning environment in the schools they are not attending while receiving credit for classes the never reported to for instruction? Inquiring mindz want to know.
Unless it is that youths sleep at home during hours they are supposed to be in school
Negros are nocturnal. There’s a supermarket that’s about a mile away – right by a housing project. You can go there anytime in the morning and afternoon – nobody there. They wake about 5:00 PM, and try to steal as many steaks as they can. The butcher told me that when he goes home at 6:00 PM – they put all the steaks / pork / chicken in the back cooler.
FOLLOW THE MONEY…It is in the interest of the school districts to maximize the number of students enrolled, even if they do not show up for classes. Funding is based on the students enrolled . . . talk about self-interest. . .in many states, students are only required (and encouraged by school officials) to show up on “count days”, usually twice a year. As “count days” determine funding, many incentives and prizes such as video games and athletic shoes are offered as incentives to get them to show up. . .
As to the absent students themselves, education is considered a “white” endeavor, and as such, blacks do not have to emulate “white” behavior and pursuits as black “pride” is much more important.
It is fraud against the taxpayers of Maryland and the USA..fraudulent numbers to pay for fraudulent teachers union jobs. Jeff Sessions, someone should go to prison.
Honestly who cares? Why does the government have the right to force anyone to go to school?
Yeah, let’s be like Africa.
That’s shortsighted and controlling..
Baltimore is a wonderful place to live.
Very few people who live there would have it be any way other than the way it is.
fuck you with a rusty chainsaw, I have lived in Baltimore for over 15 years and there are plenty of people who want to improve the city.
first thing to do is bring back the JOBS that were shipped overseas
Truancy Prisons that teach growing your own food or starve.
Oh no! What will we do for our next generation of rocket surgeons and brain scientists?
People should just take a few days off and sit at home with their loaded guns, waiting for these bottom feeders to show up to rob them. Take care of things these kids’ parents wont.
The Baltimore adult who does not keep their children in school, if they vote, they vote Democrat. The school absenteeism, failure to reach 8th grade competency levels, increasing crime, high taxes and poor city services, all represent 50 years of Democratic culture. At this point you can’t fix stupid.
“all represent 50 years of Democratic culture”
What would Republican control have done differently (and please be specfic)? Remember, Baltimore and St. Louis are the only two major cities not part of a larger county, leaving them financially isolated.
So what is Sinclair Broadcast Group’s agenda? Will they offer a solution, or are they just agitating to drum up support for their Tribune Media deal?

Pockets of gentrified prosperity surrounded by abject poverty fueled by ignorance , that describes Baltimore City . A trip into the city at night is like swimming in tropical waters at night . You run the risk of encountering predatory species resulting in injury or death !
In the city rain and cold weather keeps the majority of miscreants inside with the roaches . Just remember to be on your guard because the city powers that be are ready to make excuses for their combined total failure . The hard fact is the industrial base that paid well enough to support the city has totally evaporated and the Gentrefied Areas such as Harbor Place and the entire inner harbor construct coupled with the stadiums brought nothing but part time low wage service jobs . In steps section 8 (welfare for landlords) then Obama Adminastration forced those housing vouchers to be accepted in the rental properties in surrounding counties . Now we have the county schools and surrounding businesses getting hit with similar criminal situations we once only heard about on the news in the city . We also have an ever increasing black enrollment in county schools and an achievement gap is rearing it’s ugly head , must be racism . It could not be related to parent involvement or IQ’s now could it ?
It’s time we execute The Kaufman Plan: disincorporate the city and let it revert back to Baltimore County (which it was before 1851).
Kaufman was a left wing nut job who could afford to prance about tipping windmills because he inherented a property that gave him a place to live and income so his socialist plans to infect the surrounding areas with Baltimore cities problems were all fine and dandy to him . He still felt that way even after having been beaten and robbed and disabled by the very people he dedicated his efforts to save and spread all over ! He seemed like an ok guy till you followed his plan the. He would be in his apartment and you would be fighting off the element he moved into your area ! It’s happening now but he would have pushed it sooner !
Ok, what’s your solution?
