I have just read Volumes I and II of Gulag Archipelago. It has taken a while. The book is not an “easy” read. Interesting and well written, with a lot of dry humor woven into the prose, but I’ve had to put it down and just think about the situations described by Solzhenitson, trying to resolve the idea of saving one’s half glass of water for that moment before being taken to the latrine, hoping to relieve the pain of holding one’s waste all day long.
Communists issued ten-year prison sentences like speed cameras issue tickets in heavy traffic areas… and they did so efficiently long before there was an internet.
McCain, having spent so long in a POW camp, should have fought against the militarism of our industry harder than anyone. Instead, he made sure all the perks were in place for himself. That has been a boon to veterans, in many ways, and I don’t begrudge that service to our wounded soldiers. But… I will guarantee McCain’s medical care will be far superior to any most Vets receive. We all get that, don’t we?

Well, excuse the “been there done that pragmatic” voice in my head that seems, at times, to be rational and worth a reasonable consideration. There is a line from an old Don Henley song that seems to echo in my head a bit more than it should. Let me see what I have that rings a bell.
