“Ghost guns” such as those made from semifinished receivers that don’t quite qualify as a firearm yet, are going to end up regulated soon, along with the parts that make finishing them into a workable gun.
California already requires registering and serial numbering them so they are the same legal status as a commercially manufactured ones and penalties for owning illegal ones are severe. Cali is proposing a law that would make most gun parts the same as the firearms themselves and be available only through licensed dealers to registered and permitted owners (i.e. an AR upper receiver, barrel, or trigger group or pistol slide and the various fire control parts).
Other States have had similar proposals but I haven’t followed up on them to see if they have gone anywhere.
FWIW, a single shot pistol is actually easier to build from scrap metal than to 3D print, especially if you don’t care about legalities like a rifled barrel and such, and an illegal submachine gun would actually be easier to build than a legal semiautomatic carbine version of it that would still be legal to make in most States without restrictions outside of those currently in Federal law about barrel sizes, overall length and such..
Also FWIW, the idea behind something like the “Liberator” (a name derived from the Liberator WWII resistance pistol) is not home defense or target practice, it is made to use as a “trade in” for a much higher quality firearm with a soldier or law enforcement officer. Not a pleasant future for us if that situation comes about.
Ammunition and magazines are the largest challenge for amateur builders, I know some that are stocking up in advance because they see them becoming difficult to find in the future.

You are correct, but it won’t matter in the end. Eventually it will be possible to home mill a gun from a solid block of metal for less than $500/milling machine. At the same time, the quality of the printed guns will continue to rise while the cost falls. There is literally no way to stop the proliferation of these machines in the US short of totalitarian means.

You might get by out in the middle of the Nevada desert or Death valley or something, but there aren’t all that many people living in those areas to take advantage of it.

With todays suppressor tech and subsonic ammo, a rifle round like the 300AAC or a pistol (9mm or .45acp) isn’t much louder than a paintball gun or nail gun. The standard .45 acp ball round and most 147 grain 9mm’s are subsonic, so are some .22 lr’s.
For now, legal suppressors are not beyond the reach of most people’s budget, why take a chance with an illegal one?

As long as plumbing supplies are available I will have guns.
A .22lr bullet doesn’t need a heavy barrel. Copper tubing or Pvc pipe can contain the explosion for a few rounds which should be enough to get a real gun from a rent-a-cop.

With a declining civilization the “rule of law” will go out the window. So will gun control. Animals do not follow the law and neither will intelligent citizens follow laws that compromise their safety.
