The Heroin of “Signing Up”

Guest Post by Eric Peters

A good friend urges me to “sign up” for Obamacare. He knows about the extortion letters I have been receiving from the federal thugs who are now the enforcers for the health insurance mafia – which succeeded in getting a law passed which forces us to buy their services.

Or else.

The “or else” being punishing fines – plus interest. These are called “shared responsibility” payments but – in the first place – nothing is being “shared” (I am being forcibly mulcted) and in the second place  for whom am I “responsible”?

Note the increase SRP for future years. NTTC Training 2014.

Myself, certainly.

But that is precisely the point and the fulcrum of my objection to Obamacare – to this business of being forced to be responsible for other people’s “care” at the expense of my own.

I could afford a high-deductible, catastrophic care insurance policy – something which would “cover” just that, a catastrophic and therefore not-likely event, such as a heart attack or cancer. And precisely because such an event is unlikely, the cost of such a “plan” would actually be insurance and so affordable.

I could therefore afford to be responsible for myself.

But Obamacare has turned the concept of insurance on its head. What is going on now is not insurance. It is wealth redistribution – mostly to the insurance mafia. The law forces me – and you – to pay for things we don’t need or use (for example, maternity care “coverage” for a divorced middle-aged man and “substance abuse counseling” for a man who doesn’t abuse any substances) which means no value received for the money extorted. The money lines the pockets of the mafia, which may perhaps dole out a portion to “cover” some portion of other people’s maternity care or substance abuse counseling.

I resent being mule-hitched to the insurance mafia’s profit wagon and also having the bit shoved into my mouth so that I may be forced to pull other people’s wagons rather than my own wagon – the only wagon for which I am morally “responsible.”

Which brings me back to my dilemma – and my friend’s solution.

Obamacare has made it financially impossible for me to afford “coverage” and so am not “covered,” which makes me all of a sudden a criminal for seeking to take care of myself and not filch other people’s pockets.

For this I am the object of punishment – like any criminal – except I fail to see how I am one given I’ve harmed no one. Not even myself – and even if I do harm myself, that is a matter between me and myself – the aggrieved party. Certainly I have aggrieved no one else, assuming I am not the property of someone else.

Which of course I am, apparently. And you, too. We will get to that momentarily.

At any rate, I am the object of punishment. “Shared responsibility”  fines – technically, taxes – which is how the federal thugs legitimated the illegitimate, arguing that the Congress (more thugs) having empowered themselves to tax us – that is, to steal our money as and how they wish, by voting to do so – therefore has the power to vote to tax us for failing to send money to the insurance mafia as ordered by their other edict.

So, $695 so far –  plus interest, accumulating. My punishment for failing to be “covered” last year. It will be another $695 plus interest for this year, too.

I cannot afford this, either – not without being unable to afford the care I actually do need, such as the old filling I just had replaced and the crown I had to have done last year, which together cost me about what my “shared responsibility” payment would be for last year and this year except I decided to be responsible for myself instead.

My friend urges me to “sign up” for Obamacare” on the “exchanges.” He says it will cost less – and by “signing up” I will avoid the “shared responsibility” fines (taxes) going forward.

This is all true – but entirely beside the point. Or rather, it is exactly the point.

If I “sign up,” I will be as Lee at Appomattox. I will have surrendered. I will have accepted the idea that I am not a sovereign individual who owns himself absolutely – and the corollary of that, which is the absolute right of others to ownership of themselves. That we are each free individuals, responsible for ourselves and our actions only.

Not for the actions of others, nor they for ours.

If we “sign up,we have accepted that we are all somehow each others’ collective property and as such are subject to being used and controlled by our owners, just like a mule or any other form of property.

That we are enslaved – to each other.

This is why I will not “sign up” – in the spirit of Giles Corey, the refusnik of Salem Witch Trials fame, who declined to go along to get along by witnessing falsely against his neighbors. More weight was all he said – with a contemptuous smile – as his tormentors attempted to get him to “share responsibility” by piling stones upon his chest.

If it comes to it, they can do that to me as well.

I won’t  go to the “exchanges.” Will not voluntarily send a single penny of my money to the cretinous insurance mafia. I will not pay the “shared responsibility” tax, either.

I will continue to be responsible for myself.

If that makes me a criminal in a system gone criminal, so be it.

More weight.

Eric never seems to run out of fodder for his inane automotive analogies.

Wasn’t it just the fines and not the mandate that were repealed?

Star: correct, currently it has been “repealed” but you and I both know politicians CANNOT keep their hands off a pile of money, potential or otherwise, and as long as these stupid “shared responsibility” fines keep piling up, somewhere, someone is keeping track of them, and if the tides turn in 2020 then guess what? Suddenly all of those fines will become 100% en forcible.

Yes, the individual mandate has been cancelled – starting in 2019. It is still in effect through 2018..

It may have been repealed but last year I STILL had to pay the penalty.

They may have repealed it but the back penalties and interest are still there. You will eventually have to pay one way or another.

Well,if Eric has to give back one way or another would perhaps spending said fine money on ammo and paying back a few cents at a time to the collectors perhaps make sense?

Watch the reporting about passports being withheld/suspended/cancelled (not sure which) for Americans deemed to be past due on Federal taxes. Watch this be applied to people like our Intrepid Author and his Obamacare dun. Perhaps he does not care about traveling out of the country. Watch the same gambit be applied to the entire range of licenses and permits that the gubmint lords over us. Drivers license? Not for you until you pay your Fed “tax” bill. Want a building permit? Ditto. Want to take a Bar exam or sit for the PE, or be a barber or nail technician? Better get right with the Feds, Homey.

There’s not much left. Hopefully Trump can drive a wooden stake through the ACA’s heart, and finish it off.

Obamacare is for sure wealth redistribution. In California, the $47,520 “modified adjusted gross income” level is the trigger for about $6500 of income tax due (on premiums that approximately doubled when Obamacare went into effect in California). Those who make more are paying for those who don’t with a steep divide between them. At just above the poverty level income, health care can be as low as $1 and is a wildly good deal for them (and those insurance companies) or free with Medi-Cal if below. It is hard to believe a progressive tax system (which in itself is a bit socialist, but most people are good with that) is SO “progressive”, you can actually made some serious jack NOT earning more than a certain “magic” amount. I will admit I benefited by gaming Obamacare income levels, but know some poor bastard is paying $6500 more to pay for my health care that only makes a few dollars more…and wonder why they aren’t on the steps of the Capitol giving all this the finger. The $6500 number I quote is the amount I saved finding just one more deduction to put me under the trigger level in 2017, your savings may vary, but my point is that is quite the disincentive not to make too much money, or take too much from a 401k…

The insurance mafia is only one small part of the problem. The bigger issue is the ripoff costs of health care services and how pricing is obscured under a Byzantine system of smoke and mirrors. The obvious solution is a rule requiring each provider to post explicit costs for each health service. Bring back competition in health care and you will see prices drop dramatically. The Obamacare ACA law did nothing to address the underlying costs of care.

Todd, print up costs for services/procedures that are straight forward(get a life saving er visit will depend on services needed),hell, you want goods price marked where say you shop for groceries ect. also?!

Ha, well there is a lot more pricing transparency on what I would call the fringes of health care like dentistry and plastic surgery. Insurance coverage doesn’t penetrate these industries nearly as much, which is the major reason that the hospital/doctor mafia has freedom to charge outrageous shyster prices that have no connection to their underlying costs of providing the services.

Being poor makes life easier. I have been thinking about what the solution to our insanely expensive healthcare insurance problem is.
Someone here(a doctor?) Said that making healthcare nonprofit but with a small percentage for pay was the answer. Else than that, I think we head towards Canada’s version of healthcare.
What is happening now is lousy Obamacare is going away and replaced with? The old pay insane amounts to insurance companies like we did a few years back. It’s unaffordable for most.
Basically, most are paying a high premium for health insurance with a crazy deductible that they can’t afford. So it is unaffordable catastrophic healthcare coverage.

We need an incentive for doctors and hospitals to reduce costs. How about no health care for illegal aliens? Hell, they’re already illegal, so why are we paying to keep them healthy? Prove you’re a citizen (or a tourist, with visa) or no treatment for you. Treat illegals and go to jail.
How about an audit of every insurance company every year? If they handle a case properly (pay for healing the sick, curing disease and reducing mortality rates) among their clients, no problem. If they price gouge, overbill, have too many valid complaints and bad results, fine them – and use the money to reduce the national debt.
How about an audit of every pharma company? Document the real costs to produce things, and if they charge more than five times what is costs to make, the executives responsible go to jail. Do not pass GO, collect no bounties but do hard time in Fed prison for ripping people off. That gal who hextupled the cost of an insulin syringe would rot in Leaveworth.
There are too many incentives to cheat and game the system – and too few consequences.

I appreciate what Eric says here. But if he was so against the redistribution, he would stop paying all taxes, as that is nothing but more of the same redistribution.

So why doesn’t he do that too? Because they would haul his ass off to jail. The courage of his convictions obviously stops a bit short of being hauled off to jail.

Health insurence was set up by doctors , hospitals and insurance companies to regulate their income streams and it morphed into the mess we have now !
Having survived a catastrophic illness where life saving treatments were over $3000.00 per month for 3 years and ultimately lead to an organ transplant at $300,000.00 and drug therapy for life at about $6000.00 per year now (pre Obama care it was $3000.00) I am glad I bit the financial bullet and paid about $750.00 a month for great coverage this was pre 2013 , pre Obama care !
My care team all were so emphatic that thank god we got you an organ match now befor Obama care took over .
Obviously health care professionals knew what was in the pipeline and it was bad ! My surgeon exclaimed in another year or 2 this may be declined which means go off and die comfortably out of the way !
I continued to work thru my illness and while on dialysis right up to the day of surgery ! Many don’t won’t or can’t but I was healthy in all other aspects .
Still financially it was a real devstator long term glad I did the right thing for 42 years on the job .
As for mandatory health insurence , I think on the face of it it is a bad thing because of the arbatrary nature of what is and is not covered . Make it a mandatory tax like social security and Medicare and womb to tomb care and everything is covered drugs surgery treatments all of it . It works in most modern industrial nations . We who paid our way for insurence easily paid for such care we just do not recieve it and most insurence plans have far to many hoops to jump thru for payment and by that time you are at deaths door !
Funny no Congress or senators and staff have issues with their health insurence . I wonder why ?

It’s official now that they admit to it. I have nothing against genetic testing, per se, if you get it done privately. But, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again …. submitting your DNA to 23&Me is about the biggest dumbest fucking thing you can do in your life!

23andMe Is Sharing Its 5 Million Clients’ Genetic Data with Drug Giant GlaxoSmithKline!! Next thing you’ll know they will be sharing your info with insurance companies. Maybe copfuks next. Even on their web page it explicitly states that your DATA WILL BE SHARED with certain advertisers, and that you will be receiving targeted and unsolicited “offers”, etc etc.
