Most of that oil will never come to the surface with out serious slave labor. There are hydrocarbons in orbit around Jupiter, but can we get them here economically? No. And neither will that oil come up economically (slave labor is another story though). This ain’t uncle Jed shootin’ up some food. We’ll be burning a lot of oil to get that oil out.
As for price, $60 per barrel isn’t exactly fueling a global economic boom at the moment. Oil at $40 sustained would be better. However, at $40 most oil companies in the unconventional space wouldn’t be able to pay off their substantial debt, let alone make new investments (as Wall Street is currently leaning away). Going forward it is lose-lose for oil producers vs oil consumers. Game over.

Is it not true that many South Americans and in that area and in Cuba hate us?
Is it not true that Venezuela has a modern army?
Is it not true that we would need substantial boots on the ground to defeat Venezuela? When was the last time we fought a jungle war? Vietnam? We lost.
I would say based on the above few facts we would lose a war with Venezuela. Not only that but stirring up a hornet’s nest there could cause them along with the other countries we invaded and pissed off to come up to our southern border and kick our ass in our own country. Our army recruiters are having a hard time finding recruits to fill many empty positions. This is not 1964 when everyone passively answered the draft to be slaughtered in Vietnam.

If Venezuelan sludge and Canadian tar takes double or triple the energy (money) to EXTRACT and REFINE compared to say oil coming from Texas or Saudi Arabia, how much is that shitty oil actually worth?
There is no fucking way those reserve figures you posted could possibly be very accurate given all the variables involved in getting a refined barrel of oil to market, especially when it’s low quality sludge/tar that is heavily dependent on new and emerging technologies to extract and refine it into an economically-viable product.

You’re right, they’re not accurate. There’s way more than that but it’s been selling for decades so somebody wants it. Fracking is more costly and inefficient than that and the tar sands yet the Chinese would buy all of it if it weren’t being blocked by politics.

I know you mean well. It’s not a case of not being forgiven. The reason most of us don’t want to talk about it is because to do that it takes you back and it is stressful so it comes out sounding worse than it actually is but I can’t not talk about it when asked because I promised God I would spend my life exposing it whenever I got the chance in exchange for restoring my sanity when I would really rather spend every moment in his company because of the incredible peace it gives me. Fleabaggs mentioned how Coltan ore contains the rare elements tantalum and niobium, only found in quantity in Congo and Venezuela. Both of these elements are on the list of 35 minerals critical to national security. Tantalum is indispensable in high performance capacitors and electronics- especially military electronics.
The name “Coltan” jumped out at my in relation to Colombia of all places, where the USSA is by all accounts, massing hardware and troops on Venezuela’s doorstep.
The weird connection that popped into my sick mind was the 1984 movie Romancing the Stone.
The protagonist is Jack Colton, played by Michael Douglas. In the movie he was roaming around Colombia with his co-star Kathleen Turner searching for “El Corazon”, a large chunk of a rare mineral- Emerald.
“Jack” is a synonym for “steal” or “to steal” and Colton is interchangeable with Coltan. I’ve seen plenty of references to Coltan ore spelled as Colton.
So, in the movie, you have an American at large in the jungles of Colombia seeking to “Jack” (Steal) “Colton” (Coltan). Swap Colombia with Venezuela and you have Americans running wild looking to steal tantalum.
Coltan/Tantalum is a hell of a lot more critical to the MIC than Venezeula’s shit quality oil.
