Why Conservatives are Liberal

Guest Post by Eric Peters

The other day, I “got away” from an armed government worker.

I was “speeding” – that is to say, driving faster than the government decrees to be “safe.” Rounding a curve,  I encountered an AGW. In the rearview, I saw him brake and knew he was going to U-turn after me, in order to punish me for harms I hadn’t caused but for rules (and authority) I had affronted.

Rather than stop, I “fled” – and successfully “eluded” the AGW.

I use the air quotes – so to speak –  to make a point about the cognitively dissonant language most of use without thinking about it much. This is especially true of conservatives – who can be ferocious in defense of what they regard as their “rights” – gun rights, for example – while practically bear-hugging their supposed ideological foes on the left when it comes to shredding rights as such.

I texted a conservative friend after I was safely home. He was enraged by my story – and actually said he would “laugh for years” if I had been arrested and jailed for “eluding.”

This may be the end of our friendship – and I told him so.

I also told him – in the hope that it might register with him – that I would not laugh at all if he were manacled and caged by AGWs for harming no one but “illegally possessing” certain arbitrarily illegalized firearms, of which he has a plethora.

That I would cheer him for ignoring and “evading” such laws.

That I would defend him, if he defended himself against AGWs who attempted to enforce such laws upon him.

It didn’t register.

He continued his text fusillade – arguing that my driving faster than the government (and he) feels is “safe” constitutes a grave threat to his children and this justifies the enforcement of speed laws and also makes me a very bad person for violating them and a criminal, basically, for attempting (successfully) to avoid punishment  . . . for the harms I didn’t cause.

I pointed out that I could just as easily – were I a liberal “gun grabber” – express my dread and loathing – my feeeeeeeeelings about – his massive collection of guns, including a small arsenal of high-powered and very scary looking “military style” rifles, many with “high capacity” magazines that – surely – no one neeeeeeeeeeeeeeds. And which “someone” might use to cause my children – if I had them – harm and so ought to be pre-emptively taken out of circulation, in the interests of saaaaaaaaaaaaafety.

Or rather, my feeeeeeeeeelings about saaaaaaaaaaaaafety.

Note that neither can be objectively defined.

Unlike harm caused – which is a clear, inarguable standard because it is objective.

He replied that I “cannot control” all the various variables out on the road, which renders my fast driving ipso facto “unsafe.” With the implication being that he can control those “variables” when it comes to his guns.

Really?

What if he accidentally drops one of the guns he is always carrying – and it accidentally discharges and someone is harmed?

This could happen. Just as it could happen I glance away from the road for a moment and in that moment, fail to see a child who ran into the road in time to avoid road-pizza’ing said child.

What if he forgets he had a gun in his coat pocket and a child discovers it?

This, too, is at least a possibility.

What if he has a bad day and gets really angry and loses control of himself and goes on a shooting rampage?

Again, it is not impossible.

Just as it’s possible my driving faster than he feeeeels is saaaaaaaaaaafe might  or at least could result in loss of control, striking another car – etc.

But for the conservative, there is great confusion – deliberate blank-out – over the difference between what if – and actually did. The former is used by liberals and conservatives to justify interfering with – and punishing – people who haven’t actually caused any harm.

But conservatives don’t see the danger.

Which is why conservatives have such trouble with the concept of rights – which they have never understood – and so, of course, cannot intelligibly articulate them much less defend them.

My friend’s record of responsible gun ownership, his lack of any criminal record – the objective fact that he has not caused harm – doesn’t not matter . . . to the gun grabber. Just as my objective record of decades of accident-free driving (and training and experience behind the wheel at least equivalent to my conservative friend’s training and experience with firearms) do not matter to him.

What if? … he eructs.

Someone might! … he frets.

These are precisely the tacks used by the left to restrict/rescind the gun rights of conservatives like my friend – and to punish him for end-running or ignoring, which arouses his indignation.

Rightly so, as I told him.

But he is only bothered when those tacks are used to rescind the rights which are important to him. He is an absolutist when it comes to “gun” rights . . . a full-throated Libertarian, who seems to grok that his rights aren’t negotiable, especially on account of what if and someone might.

But he is a typically glaucomic conservative with regard to his view of rights as such.

Such as the right to be free to travel without being accosted by an armed government worker for not having caused harm to anyone.

He is not only indifferent to that right but hostile to those who object and take measures to defend their rights – regardless of the law.

This is why conservatism is a losing political/moral philosophy. It has no principles; only certain beliefs – in guns, for instance. Because it likes guns. It does not like “speeding.” Or the consumption of various arbitrarily illegal drugs – another lip curler – and cheers when those who ignore such laws are manacled and caged . . . for not causing any harm to others.

Most conservatives also fetish-worship armed government workers – the enforcement division of the government they say they distrust and seek to “limit.” The apotheosis of cognitive dissonance.

Conservatism, in sum, is just as bullying and collectivist as liberalism – only not smart enough to understand it shares the same principles.

long winded article about a text message that was probably too long as well.

I eluded the dukes, way back when gas was $1.50 a gallon, I had a 69 Buick GS, that I just filled with 106 octane race fuel ($3/gal) and this car had a 455 with a posi. Naturally, I lit up the tires at a traffic light,
and way in my rear view, I see the evil blue lights that have in PA. I knew if I got stopped, it was gonna be more than just a ticket, so, I turned off the lights (it was evening, forget to mention) and turned into some development, and started making left after left zig zaging, until I hit a dead end/round about.

I parked the car, got out, and waited in between some houses, after 15 mins, I got back in, and drove straight home. put the car in the garage for 2 months. Good times. in the town of Warminster, right next to Hatboro, near Street road, where I worked at the Naval Air station, testing P-3 Orion sub hunters.

anyways, it is one of the better feelings in life, to get away with “breaking arbitrary laws designed to increase the revenue of the jurisdiction”

Back in the day, there was an old stone hump-backed bridge outside Hatboro, where my buddy’s ridiculously over horse-powered Ford would grab some serious air. Good times, indeed.

Hey, I consulted to the NADC doing training for ASW ops on carriers back in the early 70s. Also flew in P3s and even P2s at NAS Willow Grove.

If you never heard this story, give it a read. Describes radar scandal with interesting twist: Crown Vic’s would at times emit interference from their over-loaded alternator and mess up the radar gun, yielding inaccurate results, but who cared? Write the ticket, collect the money, over and over. It even has a guy (a state patrol employee no less) who dared tell the truth.

Not sure I agree–will have to ruminate further.
It seems a bit apples/oranges of an argument he makes. By his logic then texting while driving should be okay– the person pulled over for texting and driving could make Eric’s same argument if they hadn’t crashed and killed anyone. However we do know that texting and increased speed increase the likelihood of causing an accident significantly.
Gun confiscation has NOT proven to make citizenry safer–in fact it could be easily argued that unarmed citizens are at greater risk of violence from those who have arms and ill-intent ( democide being the greatest example.)

As for the boring argument about “drug users only harm themselves”– guess he’s never seen the destruction to families, the children of drug addicts or the brutality of cartels…..Also that tired, old argument of ” if they were legal there would be no drug crime”– is about as shortsighted as any liberal/socialist logic gets. Drugs would not be free and dispensed as in Soma. No, an increasingly addicted society would still have to find a means to PAY for their addiction and the burgleries, assaults, robberies and theft would skyrocket as millions more users would be desperate for their fixes……….

I don’t disagree with his overall premise–these are just stupid examples he uses to try and make his point.

I have to disagree with your premise. It is actually very simple – Harm caused = punishment. No harm caused = no punishment.
Why is that so hard to grasp. IF the person texting and driving hits, injures or kills someone – then it results in A: If an injury happens, the person gets a fine equal to the amount of the hospital bill to get the person back to normal + some extra for the persons “pain, suffering and inconvenience”. B: If someone is killed, then the driver is up for murder or negligent homicide. Problem solved. No right infringement involved or needed. Cause and effect. Pretty damn simple.
It also is a check on stupidity. If someone knows that the law is this way, then parents will watch little Johnny a little better, walkers / pedestrians may not have so much interest in wearing HEADPHONES (yes I have seen it) while crossing the street, or walking on the shoulder, and it may make people a little more aware of their environment because the nanny state will not be there to “protect you” BUT you WILL feel the FULL throat of the law if your failure to do so causes the injury or death of someone else. THAT is the way it should work. I agree completely with Mr. Peters.

Regarding the left and right nonsense, the Meme that Ned put up is spot on. Both left and right ideologies are bankrupt, and frankly are for the intellectually lame. They are for people that have to be part of a team, not for someone with independence, liberty and logic in their brain. Most people with critical thinking skills have long since abandoned the entire left, right premise and figured out it is nothing but justification for continued infringement on their rights and revenue collection.

That’s the beauty of living in a deep-blue, liberal-haven like Portland. You never need to worry about your supposed conservative friends throwing you curve balls. I only need to hone my arguments for the democrats because those are the only people I get to interact with.

I only “fled” twice, and got away with it both times. Nothing I’m proud of, I was scared afterwards somehow they would find me, but never did.

Once I was kind of racing, really just speeding wildly with someone following me, and I looked back and saw his arm out the window gesturing at the freeway exit approaching rapidly. We were in the fast lane and I could then see a cop car coming up fast from the slow lane away back. Just as the cop car pulled into the fast lane and was then blocked by slow lane traffic, we both insanely did Steve McQueen lane changes and tore off the off ramp. The cop couldn’t make it off and stopped away down the road to see if he could see plates, but I guess not. I drove madly taking every turn I saw and then hid in a parking lot for 10 minutes. Nothing ever came of it.

The 2’nd time same kind of thing, racing wildly but on a motorcycle on a rural road with a fast car behind me doing the same. Now NOBODY but a cop is going to catch up to that because we were going as fast as I anyway could possibly go, but sure enough, lights far back catching up.

I decided to let the car pass, then slowed down to a crawl just before the cop came behind. Now I guess he never did get radar or a real track on us, so after what seemed an eternity (5 seconds or so), he tore around me and went after the other guy. U-turn, see ya for me.

But to be honest, the score has to around 15-2 and I don’t recommend evading.

I’m not sure if this counts, but one night out with the boyz drinking and cruising I can’t say why we did this, but stopped in the middle of a street and some were laying on the car hood doing some boozed version of a Chinese Fire Alarm Drill when a cop drove through the intersection just ahead. The driver yelled for everyone to get back inside, gunned it into the nearest driveway and we all put put heads down lights out. Within seconds the cop came screaming back around the corner and past us and on up the street looking for us. He never recognized the car he saw parked just 2 driveways up. We continued the other way, slow at first, then faster, and much further faster.

My old boss, Cthulhu (not his real name) said he pulled the same stunt with his buddies, they picked up a tail going down Ave K in the desert. They ducked into a residential area and pulled into an open garage. Then they pulled the garage door down. They fully expected the resident to come out but nobody ever did. They could see the cop hunting around the neighborhood so they stayed in place for a good half-hour.

There was a time, when my boss was a teen, that you could drive through the stop signs in the desert and most people still did so with aplomb even as late as the early 80’s. Ten years later, that habit caused a few accidents. Oops.

Scott ‘n Mike were two airmen similar to Tom ‘n Jerry, you never saw one without the other. Mike said he and Scott were riding bikes on the 14 up near Ridgecrest. Mike said he watched Scott riding on a curve doing about 120 and Mike was simultaneously punching in 911. “I rode over 100 once, the white stripes turned into one solid line, he said, I never want to go that fast again.”

Guy is speeding down a country road and sees a cop with lights and siren on chasing him.
He speeds up and after a few miles finally pulls over.
Cop comes up to him and asks why he wouldn’t pull over.
Guy says “Two weeks ago my wife ran off with a cop and I thought you were trying to bring her back”.
“Have a good day, sir, and please drive safely.”

People are full of contradictions. We use buffers so not to see them in ourselves. If we truly had to face all our contradictions at once we would have a nervous breakdown. Why do you think so many are on medications?

I think one of the biggest contradictions we have is facing the truth of how our government at all levels have grown to disrespect us. And we have to live with it.

Looks like Peters’ circle of trust just got one cuck smaller.
I wouldn’t mind being your friend, Eric. You sound like someone with whom I would enjoy sharing a beer or twelve. And I don’t care what you did if you were 5 over or 105 over. I also don’t shun my friends who smoke the reefer.

Beware of the “right to work laws” also. They may one day say you cannot retire because they need your taxes and if might one day decide to retire your income goes down and you might not pay enough taxes so the welfare baby starves. You might get a ticket for every day you dont work. There is no end to these communists tactics….

The circle jerk that is Wall Street to K-Street to Capitol Street are in control and AGW is nothing less then the mindless flying turd flinging monkeys that do the circle jerks bidding .
The evil party (Democrat’s) and the stupid party (Republicans) Work endlessly droning on and on in a bi-partisan effort to render evil stupid legislation to be enforced by the AGW’s upon the great unwashed while exempting themselves from all accountability or responsibility to the unintended consequences of their actions ! As they scurry about our nations Capitol like cats covering up each other’s shit !
Look at the absolutely pathetic people who are nothing less than piles of shit working the once revered halls of what was once our government that should be people of honor and integrity .
We now have self interested vermin who speak in platitudes of nonsense about anything and everything and any attempt to hold them to account is like trying to nail jello to the wall .
Socialism is now on the rise we may stop it we may not , regardless the price will be astronomical in blood and treasure amongst our selves .
As POGO said “ I’ve seen the enemy and he is us”!
