There’s that damn physiognomy again.
Not to say that beards, man-bun pony tails, and heavy frame glasses are telltale signs of suspicion, but chugging a bottle of liquor ought to raise some cautionary red flags, too.
The only possible way that frat boy has callouses on his hands is from beating his dick like it owes him money. Manual labor. Ahem.
I’d socialize with the sparky before Skippy, if forced to choose one I deem worthy of respect.
Skilled trades. Worthy.

Dishonest debt vs. honest work , if only the gov. would stop subsidizing the former the latter could prosper.

Man-bun college-boy gonna be campaigning for Bernie and AOC ALL THE WAY!

With his college degree, and everything, this person wants to be a commissioned officer in the Free-Shit Army.

I’ve told pieces of this story before, so skip it if you remember.

I had a cousin who is about 16 years younger than me get a decent football scholarship to a division 2 school. Ostensibly to develop him and then feed into Mizzou. He was an all-state middle linebacker, real clavicle breaker. Everyone was very proud of him.

He asked me the Christmas before graduation “TPC, what do you think? I got the scholarship, but I think I really would rather go weld someplace.”

See he had been in VoTech for the previous few years and LOVED the work. He had been helping his dad in their shop on the farm since before he could walk.

Me: “What do you want a degree in?”

Him: “I dunno, everyone just says I need one.”

Me: “Do you love football?”

Him: “I mean, I liked it…but I’m kind of ready to just move on with my life. I’m not a kid anymore.”

Me: “Go be a welder, college would be a waste of your time.”

The family erupted. Seriously, I think some of them still harbor resentment. So he’s been a professional welder now since then (couple years) and is making +65k a year as a welder up in Michigan. Its cold hard work, but he’s happy.

I think a few of them are starting to realize I was right, but if history is any indication hell would freeze over before they would admit I was right.

I would have told him to go to school and study MFG. managment. At 40 that degree would let him get off the truck and out of the field. Plant super of a fab shop.

No. Mgmt better learned in Hard Knocks U. rather than just college theory. 40 year old welders tend to want to move into shop mgmt automatically. Iron is hard on the back and knees.

Nephew recently graduated with degree in Construction Management. I asked his dad if the boy took any Spanish; he said yes, it was Construction Spanish. Never heard of that term before, but I suppose it includes just the bare essentials needed to communicate.

I have a decent amount of applicants that can earn more with me roofing than with their degree.
They never last.
In fact I consider advertising that “Grads need not apply”
I would actually prefer you did not have “college experience” for the job.

Pipe fitter son in law tells me the trades can’t fill their slots with apprentices.. Kids are to lazy to get up in the morning and work hard even if they are smart enough to read a tape measure. People who know how to do stuff will do well when times get tough.

I had an apprenticeship as a Pressman three days after graduation from VOC TECH in 67…one of the few picked – I interview well…was clean cut, drug free and sincere.

THE MILITARY 68/69/70

I then had a VA (paid) apprenticeship as a Photo Engraver (top line tech of its day) with a decent sized regional newspaper in 71…still clean cut, still sincere, still drug free.

Hated both skilled jobs…they were like being in well-paying, rock solid, good future, BORING prisons.

Went to college for two semesters in 74/75 for free…majored in Co-Eds with a minor in alcohol (ok, sometimes it was reversed) and was even paid $ by the VA to go! Dropped out to work on an oil rig, then as a barge handler around New Orleans, then wandered around the country living in a van down by the river…literately. My Jack London years.

Popped my first shoplifter on my first day as a Store Detective in 79 (huge black guy…choked him out…thought I had killed him at first) and my True North career path was obvious…

You can lead a boy/man to a skill…you can give him free collage and even pay him to go…but you have to find what you love to do to put your heart in it.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
