I remember 20 years ago in bumfuck Franklin, NH coming across a few dozen Yugoslav refugees living in provided housing and welfare.
Since there was a language barrier, the were pretty much an alien community in town. Franklin of course has one of the lowest graduation rates and highest teen pregnancy rates in the state and is an isolated medium sized town in bumfuck. Not exactly land of opportunity, but better than genocide… for them at least.

Acceptance of the “final solution” (whatever it actually consisted of), did not come about overnight.
