A video of several shoplifters running out of a Sears SHLDQ, -2.20% store carrying armloads of garments has gone viral on Twitter TWTR, +1.26%. The 18-second clip posted Tuesday night shows what appears to be four or five people running out of a Sears store at the Hilltop Mall in Richmond, Calif., bearing piles of what look to be mostly shirts still on their hangers. One of the thieves drops his stolen goods when a man confronts him at the exit, and the two get into a shoving and punching match before the shoplifter gets away with the others.

I’m not sure if it’s Calif or NJ but shoplifting under $950 (yes, $950)isn’t prosecuted by the DA. So, expect a lot more of it. San Fran is the auto break-in capital. They don’t prosecute that either.

In my town we have a black woman on the city council who constantly has her drawers in a knot because the aren’t any stores on the north end of town (the hood). The people up there have to drive clean across town to go to Walmart. She is extremely racist and blames”whitey” for being racist in not building them stores on that end of town. The reason is so simple as gman stated above. In driving around you will notice that as you get closer to that neighborhood the more bars you see on store (and home)windows. Could there be some correlation here?

In my day, left retail in 2000 and went into vending, here is what we did.
• For grab and runs store design is critical. Look at the design of a Target store and compare it to a Kohls. Target has a wide area you have to cross to get out, Kohls must have been designed by a Booster.
• Cables on the high coats and other high end items were used as well as ink tabs that need a special tool to get off.
• One Loss Prevention Grunt on the cameras constantly scanning looking for lifters/boosters (armatures/pros) BEFORE the hit.
• One plain clothes Loss Prevention Grunt on the floor in constant walki talki contact with the camera grunt. They will telegraph the hit if you can pick them up BEFORE and get in place.
• I used a PA codes to get back up. Code 100 meant for the managers and selected ‘trained employees’ to quickly ‘but casually’ get to the front, and get ready for LP back up. Meaning its going down soon.
• Code 1000 was haul ass we are taking them down now or there is an apprehension in progress. (Any employee could call a Code 1000 once they witness the apprehension in progress).
• We weren’t allowed to leave the front sidewalk after the early 90’s, too many ugly fights, stabbings, shootings and run overs in the parking lot. The Workman’s comp outweighed the cost of the merchandise and the personal injury.
• I would put 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 LP Grunts in one store on a Saturday night (leaving other stores open) and many nights we would be the Indians at the retail battle of the Little Big Horn. Great team builder, and makes a strong statement throughout the booster grape vine.
Then take them all out for beers after. The LP Grunts loved it, I did too.
At our local mall the security guards are not allowed to interfere with shoplifting leading to the question; What the hell is their purpose?

Uniformed Security Guards are useless for all forms of stealth shoplifting, but will deter or can confront many obvious retail crimes, like the one in this video, if they are there…but mostly they are there for reassurance to the customers and window dressing deterrence.
1 out of 11 Americans shoplifts…it is as frequent of a crime as jaywalking, and is now close to the same consequence level.
I made my first pop in 79 at the entry level for a 4 store grocery chain in New Brunswick NJ, and my last in 99 as a Director over three divisions in a five company retail group, Loss prevention the main division. There were hundreds of lifter/booster stops, and many violent pops, in-between.
Shoplifting causes a little over 1/3rd of the retailer’s losses, employee theft is a bigger loss, then there is direct delivery vendor theft (underestimated by many) and last paper work errors.
As the culture devolved so did the retailers appetite for the confrontation, and the cost of dealing with the 1 out of 11.
The cost of shoplifting is added to the merchandise.
I don’t know today’s exact stats been out of the game for a while, but I suspect the 10 out of the 11 pay at least a$1,000.00 a year in higher prices to make up for the epidemic thefts.
ORC, Organized Retail Crime is a standalone industry, involving professional boosters (many who are drug addicts) repack houses, flea markets, and a black/grey market supply chain that sells retailer’s own merchandise back to them. It became my specialty the last decade of my retail career, and is an Alice in Shoplifting Wonderland rabbit hole onto itself.
