QUOTES OF THE DAY

“Whenever you put your faith in big government for any reason, sooner or later you wind up an apologist for mass murder.”

Karl Hess

“As government grows, liberty dies.”

Philipp Bagus

“The police of a state should never be stronger or better armed than the citizenry. An armed citizenry, willing to fight, is the foundation of civil freedom. That’s a personal evaluation, of course.”

Robert A. Heinlein

“Even if you’re not doing anything wrong, you are being watched and recorded.”

Edward Snowden

Karl Hess was a good friend. We corresponded often by phone and old fashioned US Mail back when I was the chairman of the Western NY Libertarian Party.

He was a speechwriter for Barry Goldwater when he ran for president in 1964.

He is the one who wrote Goldwater’s speech with, “Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice; moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.” Although often attributed to Karl, to his credit he freely admitted that it wasn’t his. He had found it in a letter from historian Harry Jaffa and only later realized that even that was a paraphrase of Cicero.

Karl ran for governor of West Virginia back in 1992 and when a reporter asked him what his first order of business would be if elected he said it would be to demand an immediate recount…

He passed away in 1994.

Karl was a good man. I loved his dry sense of humor. I miss him…
