The Young Have Nothing to Lose But Their Chains

The road to freedom is paved with repudiation.

Guest post by Robert Gore at Straight Line Logic

Tuesday The Burning Platform website posted an article, “Your Government In Action,” that had a Twitter video of a long line of cars in Albuquerque, the people in them waiting for coronavirus tests. I posted the following comment:

I live in Albuquerque and was not one of the idiots in line. Yesterday was a beautiful day and I rode my mountain bike for 40 minutes in the sun. It was just right, not too cold, not too hot. We have an arroyo near our house and I did some dirt biking on the loose sand, great exercise for the legs. My gym sent an email last night and it’s closing for an indefinite time. Looks like mountain biking will be the exercise for awhile. but I could tell that the fresh air and sunlight were doing me more good than time spent in my hyper-sanitized gym or cooped up in the house. I felt great. The schools have been closed and I found it disturbing that I didn’t see one kid outside playing. Sunshine and fresh air are known disinfectants, but parents are keeping their kids indoors and the world is locking up people in quarantines. No sunshine, no fresh air, only insanity.

Read a Wall Street Journal article this morning about the younger generation in Europe rebelling against the insanity, going to bars and restaurants and having dinner parties. Why not, they aren’t getting coronavirus, and when they do it amounts to a cold or minor flu. My son is 22 and has the same attitude. What all the grim statistics no longer categorize is the age of the people dying. The media still begrudgingly admit that it most severely afflicts those with compromised immune systems, i.e. primarily older people. Our gerentocracy is panicking because they’re the most at risk. One among many issues most boomers refuse to face is their own mortality. I’ve told my son several times that if his generation sits still and pays the taxes and debt service that’s going to be required to fund our generation’s “entitlements” without repudiating the debt, slashing the entitlements, and perhaps out and out revolution, his generation will deserve its fate and its shame. Boomer removal indeed. Party on kids, maybe the coronavirus will lighten the load my generation has foisted on you.

Yojimbo, a Burning Platform commentator, posted the following:

Maybe since you are against Socialism, write a simple, concise argument in an essay about why repudiation of the debt is a far better answer than the Socialism that Bernie is advocating.

Perhaps if it were short, simple, and cogent, it might circulate among the young and truly inform them and turn them away from Socialism?
Just a thought.

I replied:

That’s a good idea. I’ll see what I can do.

Here’s the article. It’s short, by my standards; I hope readers find it “simple, and cogent.”

The Young Have Nothing To Lose But Their Chains

According to usdebtclock.org, the on-the-books’ debt of the US government is almost $23.5 trillion, or over $72,000 per citizen. The four biggest items in the government’s budget are Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security, defense, and interest on the debt. The government’s unfunded liabilities are over $128 trillion, or over $397,000 per citizen. Now it is true that national assets stand at $151 trillion, or over $468,000 per citizen. Unfortunately, many of those assets are debt, equity or contractual claims (like insurance and pensions) on insolvent governments or businesses, or real estate, often subject to a mortgage. The problem is that all these assets are valued at current market, which can shift dramatically in a very short time—as we’re now seeing—while the nominal value of the debt doesn’t go down, it just continues to grow, and with the coronavirus outbreak its growth rate will increase.

Taking a cue from their parents and grandparents, the younger generation wants to grant itself new entitlements—higher education, medical care, guaranteed incomes, etc. They’ve flocked to Bernie Sanders, the most prolific promiser of free stuff. The older generation owns most of the assets and because they’re retiring, whatever they “contribute” towards taxes and debt services will be far outweighed by what they’ll draw in Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Consequently, for whatever it grants itself, the younger generation will be either be paying taxes or adding to its already staggering debt and unfunded liability burdens. It will be shooting itself in the foot.

There is another way that will do much more for them. Instead of voting for supposedly “free” stuff for which they’ll wind up paying, the younger generation would be far better served by repudiating the older generation’s debt and unfunded liabilities. By refusing to be debt slaves to pay for their elders’ entitlement promises to themselves, and for the forever wars they’ve waged since World War II (which the younger generation is now expected to fight), the younger generation could opt for a clean slate. There is already an undercurrent from the fringes promoting debt jubilees and the like.

For the young to be truly better off after a debt repudiation and to solidify its moral basis, they would have to swear off entitlements for themselves, to be paid for by their children and grandchildren. However, that seems like a fair trade—no entitlements, but no crushing debt service and tax loads either, and undoubtedly a far healthier economy than what now lies in prospect. In other words, more freedom, much more so than if their elders’ schemes run according to plan.

The growing debt load is not sustainable; repudiation is going to happen one way or the other. If the older generation wants to make its oft-expressed bromides about the “children,” “grandchildren,” and “future generations” anything more than self-serving pieties, it will support repudiation in a way that benefits their posterity. If they oppose it, they should at least quit lecturing the young about Sanders and “no free lunches.” They’ve been giving themselves free lunches for decades.

As for that posterity, instead of voting for an old guy who’s only going to enslave them more, the younger generations should coalesce around candidates who promote debt repudiation, rescind or eliminate taxes, and freedom. Unite and repudiate, you have nothing to gain from the bankrupt and corrupt status quo and nothing to lose but your chains.

I am sure they all will, AFTER this crisis, once they each have their $1000 and suspended interest & payments.

Great topic, Robert, however any politician who advocates debt repudiation and ending war will find himself in the cross-hairs of many, many who profit from both. IMHO, the only way will be for a total collapse and a restart with a clean slate.

Great post. You are neither running for anything or from it. My 25 yr old kid is finally recognizing that the powers that be have not got his back. I have ranted for ten years about “my” generations asinine abundance. I intend to forward this to him as he was in the Bern camp. (I think its trendy on the social media). Wish me/us all luck.

Robert says: “Oh well, I’m not running for anything.”.

Well, I’d vote for ‘ya if you were. ?

But seriously, when I read the above article I was reminded of a quote that always seems to surface while considering future generations:

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.

– Thomas Jefferson, (Attributed), 3rd president of US (1743 – 1826)

Although some claim those words are an amalgamation of statements by Jefferson and others, it doesn’t diminish its validity.

Whether COVID-19 is a real killer or the result of the malevolent manipulation of testing, data compilation, and reporting (media and otherwise), the fact remains it has accomplished many objectives of which are very handily summarized in this short post by the Bionic Mosquito:

Financial Distancing

What if you knew that markets were going to burst, an inevitable outcome of the funny money and credit created, especially since 2008–09 but also before then? What if this bursting was going to create a calamity both on Wall Street and Main Street? What if you knew martial law was in the cards due to this economic distress, but didn’t want to declare martial law?

What if you knew that the debt load was much too high, and one way to drastically shrink that debt load was to push hundreds – even thousands – of companies into financial distress and bankruptcy? What if by doing this, you would push many banks into distress? What if, by doing this, you opened up the door to allow you to borrow even more, given everyone’s flight to “safety”?

What if you could solve all of these problems by taking the commercial loans off of the books of the banks while at the same time allowing the distressed debt to go insolvent, thereby allowing your favorite friends to pick up assets at pennies on the dollar? What if you could hold this bad debt at an institution that had absolutely no risk of insolvency?

What if all of this allowed you to take even more control of all economic and social activity?

How could you set it up such that you wouldn’t get blamed for the financial calamity, yet bring the financial calamity on for your benefit and the benefits of your closest buddies? How could you get people to voluntarily act as if there was martial law without declaring martial law?

Well, nothing immediately comes to mind….

The bankers have foreclosed. They now own everything. They pay the police and the military. They have subsidized the educational system that has indoctrinated the youth. And, under extreme duress, have turned us all into socialists via bailouts and the forthcoming nationalization of healthcare.

Not to succumb to nihilism here… but what can the kids possibly do now?

Uncola, you ask “…what can the kids possibly do now?” They can do what you have been raising, schooling, teaching, encouraging them to do. What HAVE you been raising, schooling, teaching, encouraging them to do? What example have you (we) been providing for these “kids”?

If you have raised nice, hard working, respectful, thrifty, innovative, charitable, God fearing, loving “kids”, you have nothing to worry about, those kids will be just fine. If, on the other hand, you have left the education and training of these ‘kids” to the tv, public schools, malls and God-less society of mammon graspers, those kids are screwed, and (if they ever get unscrewed) might just tell you how bad an example you were.

It is on you and me, brother. Always has been, always will be.

Stupid. What would have made sense was exactly what Armstrong laid out and what I told Dad a couple of weeks ago: Mortgage moratorium. These guys just. Don’t. Get. It. We have got to get these old fucks out of politics…they still think we’re on the gold standard or something. A gamed CPI just makes it worse.

A mortgage moratorium and suspension of interest payments is very similar to what Caesar did during the Roman real estate crisis. I knew what Marty would suggest before he even did it because…IT WORKED! (And pissed off the money lenders, which is a double bonus!)

The Boomers have got to be forced out of politics. They’re seriously going to kill us all.

The X’ers gravest Fourth Tuning duty will be their society’s most important pre-seasonal task: to ensure that there can indeed be a new High, a new golden age of hope and prosperity. For the Crisis to end well, X’ers must keep Boomers from wreaking needless destruction and Millennials from marching too mindlessly under their elders’ banner. They will not find it easy to restrain an older generation that will consider itself far wiser than they, and a younger one that will consider itself more deserving. For this, X’ers will require a keen eye, a deft touch, and a rejection of the wild risk taking associated with their youth.

I’ve got to take myself out of self-imposed isolation and get into politics. DAMN IT ALL. I JUST WANT TO GROW APPLES.

I thought it was excellent, and the lead in with TBP comentary was spot on, thank you. For the record, and to his credit, the first out of the gate and the most prolific poster highlighting age concealment was Hardscrabble. The Achilles heel to their narrative.
In my opinion, it is going to be blow off top, and a return to some strain of Austrianism. Repudiation seems baked in at this point, take a deep breath and look at what they are about to do, free money.
So the next gens are going to get a front row seat to that clown show, as we all are and I imagine the utopian promises of free money will be laid bare for all to see.

“Then I say, the earth belongs to each of these generations during its course, fully and in its own right. The second generation receives it clear of the debts and incumbrances of the first, the third of the second, and so on. For if the first could charge it with a debt, then the earth would belong to the dead and not to the living generation. Then, no generation can contract debts greater than may be paid during the course of its own existence.” –Thomas Jefferson to James Madison, 1789. ME 7:455

Repudiation is something I’ve recommended for decades. The US should just tell all the people they owe money to to go pound sand. That would cut the US off from all future loan possibilities and would force gov’t to live with a reasonable budget and no deficit spending. End central banking and fiat currency. Return to sound money.

Gov’t created the Ponzi scheme known as Social Security and at some point it must fail. Why wait? Gov’t created all the categories for entitlements to purchase votes from the trash in the society. Stop it.

Repudiation will never happen, at least not voluntarily. The US is bankrupt economically and at some point it will renege on its obligations probably by hyperinflating the currency to where the green pieces of paper won’t buy anything of note. People will get their entitlement checks and will think of them as toilet paper that gets mailed to them.

Recommending to coalesce around candidates is asking the people (politicians) to fix the problems they created. Sorry, but that’s plain stupid. There has never been a gov’t that hasn’t gone rogue in time. Putting your faith in some scumbag politician who knows how to mouth the right words is idiocy on steroids. Sanders is the model.

The Fed Gov needs to be dissolved as the initiating event to return to something sustainable. All federal employees and those hangers on will be decimated – that’s a bonus for being leaches on the people that actually produce goods and services. Smaller and smaller gov’t need to be devised as a temporary crutch to keep eliminating fraud, waste and corruption until the productive people realize they don’t need gov’t. Only the human trash that infects society needs gov’t to steal for them at every possible opportunity.

Considering that the event, and the reaction to the event, are all man made, it seems very likely that the outcome of this is going follow the same patterns through history..In other words, nothing is going the change, in regards to looking at debt, as a solution.

In fact, they appear to be adding mountains of it, and it will be distributed as credits to themselves, and as debits to the public account, again.

I actually talked to her the other day because when Geneva and I were out walking I noticed a tree along the road’s edge about to fall onto the road from her land. I told her it looked as if it were pulling up roots and trying to get away.

MODOT came to cut it. We try not to call MODOT for stuff that isn’t road related.

My grandfather founded the road district committee in Southeast Missouri. Department of Transportation should fix roads and not cut down trees for rich widows of railroad executives who own a lot of land.

But, the world works how it works. I’ll get her number to you. I’ll need to pre-brief her. I bought her several cases of Jack Daniels from the AFB liquor store to put into storage. She’s a different kind of prepper.

Before the GFC, we had 7% annual true inflation, since 2009 we have 9% (i.e. purchasing power halves every 8 years, by rule-of-72.)

Speaking of chains, my daughter took pictures of her national guard armory in north alabama an hour ago. There are normally 2-3 vehicles. Today 3/19/20 there were hundreds of ominous looking military swat type vehicles there…if i knew how to upload a pic i would..

You have to upload the pic to some public storage site first, then paste the link to the image in the body of your comment.

All I have to say to it is, GOOD LUCK!

My new policy going forward is, “If you are employed in any way by the state or the Feds, you’re not welcome to my produce.” No exceptions. That especially goes for defense contractors.

Problems have compounded for years and the complexity of any solutions boggles the mind.

Don’t expect much from the kids; I nominate Flea for a Nobel for his phrase mal-education.

For starters how about getting spending under control, especially at the federal gov’t level? Ain’t going to happen.

“Leadership” will spend, borrow, and print our way out of the rapidly closing vice. So yeah, let’s try repudiating spending-as if that has a snowball’s chance in Hell. U.S. creditors of all stripes will wake up one day and be told their claim has been set to zero; tough luck and we wish you well-sorry we have spent all these years in service to the county by mostly kicking the can down the road.

If the country wants to stay on top then it is time for some out of the box thinking for once-and that does not mean the kind of moronic thinking that Bernie and his kind spout for embracing the failed policies of the past. Announce the repudiation of all our debt and then-since we are in our spare time dealing with a pandemic of unknown origins-follow up with worldwide EMP attacks on all other nations, friend (who are our friends, anyway?) and foe. We can then clear the way for a new beginning. Once we help ourselves we can search for friends worthy of our help.

Sort of how things are done in the jungle when the villagers are asleep.

For what its worth, I have been working outside in the sunshine, and have seen more kids on bikes going by and more “strangers” (now new neighbors I have met), walking their babies and dogs, than I have seen in a very long time. Even better, it was during school hours when they otherwise would have been inside, getting no vit. D and getting non-stop government/LGBTQXBFDWTF propaganda. Hopefully their nonchalant interactions with each other with NO dire consequences, will also open up their eyes to what this REALLY was about and also reject their blind allegiance to the criminals that infest our government at every level.

During the 1918 event one of the treatments was to take patients out side
“Records from an “open-air” hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, suggest that some patients and staff were spared the worst of the outbreak. A combination of fresh air, sunlight, scrupulous standards of hygiene, and reusable face masks appears to have substantially reduced deaths among some patients and infections among medical staff.”

RG…

That’s good to hear, as you originally said:

“The schools have been closed and I found it disturbing that I didn’t see one kid outside playing.”

We lived across the street from an elementary school for over 35 yrs. It sits on 5-6 acre, ‘L’ shaped lot, with 4 clusters of playground amenities. One group for the 6 yr olds with small sled/jungle gym, another group for the 8-9 yr. olds, and then a couple sets of swings.

Now, picture the school sets to the eastern edge of a large lot, roads around the perimeter, with the western side still gravel (the school lot was established 75 yrs back). Back to the eastern side, chain link fence runs from the south edge of the building for about 300′ to the corner, then west for about 400′ to the ‘toe of the lot’, so to speak. No more fencing all along the remaining 1500-2000′.

Yesterday, the main. crew showed up and put snow fencing around all 4…off limits. And put a zip tie on the walk thru gate at the southeast corner of the building. This evening, as is the norm, dozens of kids, parents, were out to use the playground. The first group of kids saw the zip tie on the gate, and just pedaled around and came in from the back side….as did anyone that didn’t originally come from the west side…

Murray Rothbard recommended repudiation of the debt decades ago. You are in great company. The best consequence of it is that NOBODY would ever lend the US another dime and government would either have to steal 100% of the wealth of the nation (still leaving them short, and something nobody would tolerate), or they would have to finally live within their means. A win-win for everyone.

What largesse is due to those who never borrowed and have no debt?
Repudiate debt is to repudiate bad behavior. Any lessons learned? Consequences had? Nobody paid the price in 2008-9. And, we’re at the rodeo again.

Repudiation of the federal debt only punishes those who sought to profit from the financial enslavement the debt created for everyone else. I am not suggesting repudiation of VOLUNTARILY-CONTRACTED debt (so student loans, mortgages, etc.), just the federal debt. And it is NOT a repudiation of bad behavior. In fact, the signal it would send to everyone is that the behavior will never happen again because nobody will be willing to lend.

Update. 3/19/20 7:25 central. My daughter who works for a regional trucking company today had over 58 loads cancel. Drivers refusing to drive the goods….unprecedented she said….there are 22 of her and each had the same nearly. Thats over a thousand loads…..seems we may need the feds or national guard to take over shipping at some point as this virus spreads

So WAY WORSE. Sadly, one can’t pull a CDL out of their ass and start driving the big rigs. But there are certainly a lot of folks who would happily step up for a decent paying job like that. I am a capable driver, and I would certainly need a lot of training (just to back one of those huge bastards up safely) before I would ever want to or be qualified to drive one.

Italian health officials just randomly swabbed youts and found 50-70% have CV-19. Many youts have been showing up at doctor’s offices with the same problems: a dry cough and can’t hold their breath 10 seconds; X-rays show their lungs are clogged with fibers. Many viruses are for life: AIDS, Hepatitis, Herpes, Genital Warts, Meningitis, Polio, Rabies, etc; it would have been wise if the youts had gotten an education in their high schools; in the 50s, I remember studying about STDs in Biology class, Communism in Civics; fatal Spanish, French and German National Debts in History etc. No need to repudiate the debt now, History is replete with examples of countries that have printed Fiat like WDC (hyperinflation collapse is now unavoidable) and Paper Securities will become like Assignats.

Read a list of unhealthy practices that are common in Italy recently-like high rate of smoking-plus a very strong link to China in manufacturing. Lots of Chinese owners and workers living in northern Italy. Shouldn’t be too hard to find a correlation between choices and outcomes.

So Gov Wolf just ordered all non-essentail biz in PA closed yesterday. This makes remote work even a challenge. My wife was able to work remotely, but they still needed some people at the biz to deal with checks and mailings. Emailing bills and such won’t work, and legally they can’t rely on emails to all their customers. So not only will alot of income to the biz end, they won’t be able to function for very long. IF anything happens to the servers that require a physical intervention they are screwed. You can do alot of IT stuff remote now adays, but sometimes servers have to be taken offline physically. There still is alot of physical work done with computers/networks and problems do occur. So its cross your fingers and see how long things can hold up b/c the doors are closed by Sat am under the force of law. Talk about overkill, they had very few actual humans in the building at this point anyway.

I feel for the healthcare workers big time though. If you are a nurse and your kids are home from school WTF are they supposed to do, skip work? Alot of people don’t live near family anymore, and that is a real weakness and fragility in times of trouble. Both our local old folks/nursing homes have severe shortages of 95 masks. They will both run out today, they are asking for donations from construction companies to get them through. Hopefully they at least use the surgical masks, which will probide at least some protection. Maybe they should raid some of the damn bunkers and grab 100 million masks they have hid away to help get through this. The bottom line is the healthcare workers, too many of them sick or in quarantine and deaths will happen–but most of them probably won’t be from Covid but just from the other thousand normal things that kill people.
