When I went to boot camp, the first night a WWII era swabbie corpsman that had over 30 years duty was doing his final tour at recruit depot San Deigo. (He had a huge rack of ribbons with multiple purple hearts and lots of medals for valor but had been busted more times than he could remember and was retiring as a 1st class petty officer, E-6). He told us about using cellophane from a packet of smokes to stop a sucking chest wound in ‘nam and also about missing the crackerjack uniform as we were now dressed as bus drivers. He joked that with the 13 button flap on the front of the pants one could undo one side and show the woman what she could look forward to. If she responded that it wasn’t impressive and she had seen those before, one could then unbutton the other side and pull it out again and say, that you had two of them.

In truth, the old brass “cannons” and such did not fire cannonballs, they were very effective shockwave creators, knocking down walls.
In truth, early cannon were bronze, not brass, and did fire projectiles. It took some time before the projectiles were large enough (and the cannon strong enough to safely handle the needed gunpowder charge) for siege work. The “shock wave” had no effect on fortification walls. The strength of the shock wave, like all energy emissions, follows the inverse square of the distance law.
They did provide a psychological effect on the battlefield in excess of their battle effectiveness early on.
