Pictorial Essay: 100+ Year Old Mansions In Every State

I Made Custom Quarantine Postcards! And You Can, Too! — The Gold Hive

The ONLY two search criteria will be homes built before 1920, and 3,000 square feet minimum … nothing else.  As in the previous Homes Pictorial, the link to the house (on Zillow) will be given.  The link name will be the city. The other data on that line will be;  the price, square footage, and year built. My  hilarious commentary will be kept to a minimum … I don’t want Admin to lose any more donations.

If you comment, please consider telling us your favorite home, or Top3. (It won’t be easy … pretty much all of these are spectacular in one way or another.)

=============================== =

Alabama

Montgomery /   $625,000    /    5,428 sq ft /   1914

Alaska

Only 3 homes for sale built before 1920.

Ketchikan /   $499,000     /    3,364 sq ft /    1920

Arizona

Arizona Ghost Town Museum.  Includes all the artifacts.

Pearce /   $1,100,000    /    3,882 sq ft /   1895

Arkansas

YIKES!! Might as well include a fugly one. Doesn’t look like an 1800 building. On the plus side it has a theater room with leveled seating and a 7 person hot tub.

Bono /   $598,000    /    8,538  sq ft /   1800

California

181 properties!  Prices range from  $135,000,000 to $310,000.  I love Queen Anne Victorians, so I went with this one … even though there are far grander homes, like this 1914  Grand French Style Estate  Most oddly, out of 40 pictures there was only ONE interior picture!

Coronado /   $24,000,000    /    7,446 sq ft /    1887

Colorado

“Redstone Castle”, built for $2m back in 1902 … when that was a significant sum. Current owners spent a small fortune restoring it to as close as original as possible,   even down to the furnishings.  More HERE.

Carbondale /   $16,900,000    /    25,127 sq ft /    1902

Connecticut

243 listings!  From $40,000,000   to  $215,000  Chose this one because it is really old (1740).  George Washington slept here.  Really,  it was the first time he had sex with Betsy.

Ashford /   $349,900    /  3,158  sq ft /    1740

In this bedroom.  On that bed. While the British kept a comin’

Delaware

George Washington also slept here.  Not with Martha. Someone named Josephine Biden.

Bridgeville /   $600,000    /    3,566 sq ft /    1750

In the bathroom.

Florida

Click on this one if nothing else.  Someone did a helluva job converting this into a home … and a very modern one at that. Very thick  walls and a heavy sturdy roof …. you might become a big SPLAT! in the event of the Rapture.

Key West   /   $3,999,999   /  4,849  sq ft /    1900

Georgia

If I could afford it, I would move to Savannah in a heartbeat. A quintessential  charming Southern town if there ever was one.  Love at first sight, for me. But, it’s been over 20 years since I’ve been there … maybe it’s changed.

Savannah /   $3,500,000    /   8,000  sq ft /   1911

Hawaii

The only 100 year old property for sale in all of Hawaii. Built by Alfred Hockings, founder of the Honolulu Brewing Company.

Honolulu /   $7,300,000    /  5,715  sq ft /    1903

Idaho

We already saw a converted church.  How about a converted school!! Great for home-schooling. Lots of bedrooms.  Not one picture of the kitchen. ….. “Danger, Will Robinson!

Alene /   $3,000,000    /  8,412  sq ft /    1905

Nice knobs ya got there, Ma’am!!

Illinois

I would sell my first-born son into slavery for a kitchen like this.  Gold and bronze leaf ceilings, Venetian plaster, custom painted walls, full slabs of imported natural stone in each bath, and so on.  This is the bargain priced home featured. Really.

Hinsdale  /   $3,499,000    /    12,560  sq ft /   1917

Indiana

Let’s go right to the worst deal.  Having lived in IN for 10 years it’s hard for me to believe there’s a $16m dollar house.  OK, so you get 22 acres, an island,  1 cottage, 4 cabins, and a partridge in a pear tree.  But … $16.5 million? PUH-LEASE!!  Not even one interior picture.

Culver  /   $16,500,000    /  5,734  sq ft /    1880

Iowa

95 listings and hardly a one of them was interesting.  This one’s OK.  I would rat out Admin to the Covid Injection Squad for a den/study like this.

Cedar Rapids /   $579,900    /  6,281   sq ft /    1907

Kansas

Very slim pickings in Kansas also.  The owners of this house obviously only bought discontinued paint, or paint that was 90% off.  Or, they’re blind.

Waterville /   $229,000    /  3,125  sq ft /   1880

Kentucky

Looks like a horse farm. Gorgeous. Mile long driveway. 10 acres.  Lovely landscaping.  I just might have to consider Kentucky as my next destination.  (If BL doesn’t post for the next coupe of days … just assume he dropped dead at hearing this news.)  Helluva good price, all things considered.

Prospect  /   $2,950,000    /  10,050   sq ft /    1905

Louisiana

Three things come to mind when I think of a Southern Mansion; portico, large porch, long wide steps leading to the front entrance.  Add Louisiana to the mix .. then include a swamp … which this property has … as well as the required lush foliage and trees with hangy down thingees.

Houma   /   $3,100,100    /  8,516   sq ft /   1849

Maine

Question;  if you live in Maine, and you’re not on shoreline (or on an island), why even live there? Cuz ya like moose shit?  To take a crap, and to be able to look out the window and see the ocean … man, oh man, that’s heaven on earth.

Portland   /   $6,500,000    /  8,066  sq ft /    1907

Maryland

Hard to believe this is LESS than an hour drive from Filthydelphia!

Elk Mills  /   $1,650,000    /  17,710  sq ft /   1760

Massachusetts

Cape Cod, naturally.  “I live on the water, Jim.”  “You mean, near the water, num-nuts“.  “I know what I mean douchebag, I live ON the water!” If you’re a guy, please vote thumbs up if you’d consider jacking off a mountain lion with barbed wire in a phone booth just to live here.  (The inside is nothing special at all.)

Orleans   /   $5,999,999   /  3,267  sq ft /    1920

Michigan

Thank you Jeeeesus!  I was soooo hoping there would be a property on Mackinaw Island … one of the most gorgeous spots in America.  If you ever have the chance to go …. GO!!

Mackinac Island   /   $5,850,000    /   8,000 sq ft /    1888

Minnesota

“Lake of the Isles” is also known as “Cream Of Wheat Row” … because the founder of that cereal company, and many of his executives built their mansions there.

Prince name-checked Lake of the Isles in one of his songs …   “Rock and Roll is Alive (and it Lives in Minneapolis)” … and you’ll hear the line “Sure as the drive around Lake of the Isles is cool I know.”

There was also a very famous line in the movie “The Graduate”

Mr. McGuire: Are you listening?

Benjamin: Yes, I am.

Mr. McGuire:  Cream of Wheat.

Benjamin: Exactly how do you mean?

Mr. McGuire: There’s a great future in Cream Of Wheat. Think about it. Will you think about it?

Minneapolis /   $3,995,000    /  8,814   sq ft /    1931

Mississippi

“Ormond Plantation”  I picked this one because Mississippi and “plantation” go together.  And because of all that natural light.  (These mansions are often too dark.)  Aaaaand, because …. somebody likes beer mugs!!   Too funny seeing something so schmaltzy in a joint like that.

Natchez   /   $2,150,000    /  8,000  sq ft /    1920

Missouri

Might as well pick one shit hole city. Only one picture available.

Saint Louis  /    $8,765,000    /  13,804   sq ft /    1915

Montana

Only 3 of the 44 listings were true mansions … over 6,ooo sqft.  The rest were 100 year old homes on a lot of land. If you like a fucken cow head hanging on your wall, then this house is for you.  Me?  I can’t stand most of humanity. So, this is my ideal location.

Gallatin Gateway  /   $899,000    /  5,215   sq ft /    1885

Nebraska

Featuring this as a possible business opportunity for an enterprising and ambitious  reader. Really! 83 pictures. From the listing —> “Historic Argo Bed & Breakfast. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior. The zoning has been recently changed to residential and is currently a residence and being run as an Air B&B, zoning can be changed back to commercial to run the bars and/or restaurant.”   Crofton is a BOOMING town.

Crofton  /   $750,000    /  10,048  sq ft /    1915

BOOMING, I tell ya!! And only 158 miles to Omaha.

Nevada

Only three for sale.  Sure, the one for $15,900,000 in Reno     is real real nice.  But, I decided to feature at least one home that I could afford.  A little paint … a couple trips to Home Depot … and this thing will be a real looker.  (No other pics available.)

Pioche   /   $95,000    /  4,800  sq ft /   1872

New Hampshire

This has got to be the longest damned house I have ever seen.  Only five miles from Hardscrabble Farmer’s farm.

Francestown  /   $1,250,000    /  7,609   sq ft /    1822

New Jersey

It’s getting late, and I’ve been at this for hours. And I don’t feel like looking thorough 139 listings for something interesting … cuz I hate NJ.  I love the dining room. Next!

Madison /   $3,895,000    /  7,409  sq ft /    1890

New Mexico

Such a big house …. such a small kitchen.  Weird.

Cimarron   /   $3,400,000    /  9,000  sq ft /    1910

New York

923 listings!!  Jeebus,  I’ll be here till Christmas.  Gotta narrow it down.  Decided to go with NYC … the greatest city in the world!!  Specifically, Manhattan.  I’m gonna pick the most expensive listing. Hey, this is easy!!  From the listing —->  “… stunning interior design by Thierry W Despont LLD while making a statement in architectural mastery by Pierre Yves Rochon.”   Thierry? And Pierre Yves too??!  Well, suck my balls, Cartman, I’m impressed as hell!!!  (Noo Yawkers …. pretentious f’en assholes!!!)

Manhattan   /   $63,000,000    /  13,000  sq ft /    1910

North Carolina

Living on top of a mountain seems like a lovely option.

Blowing Rock   /   $2,399,000    /    5,111 sq ft /    1919

North Dakota

This picture was taken just moments after several nearby grain elevators exploded.

Devils Lake   /   $154,900    /    4,086 sq ft /    1909

Ohio

Austrian Peters’ home in England.  Please send him some money for furniture.

Marietta  /   $950,000    /   6,080 sq ft /   1915

Oklahoma

Helluva bargain.

Shawnee   /   $324,000   /   6,347 sq ft /    1906

Oregon

OK … being poor is really starting to piss me off!   lol

Lake Oswego  /   $5,600,000    /   9,124  sq ft /   1913

Pennsylvania

Jeebus …not again!  447 listings.  Hmmm … gonna try to find something near Philly from the 1800s.

Villanova   /   $2,795,000    /  7,353  sq ft /    1880

Rhode Island

Newport  /   $6,900,000    /    7,644  sq ft /    1870

South Carolina

Antebellum living at is finest.  Been on the market for 274 days.  Betting you can joo them down to under a million.

Camden  /   $1,200,000    /    5,000 sq ft /    1854

South Dakota

Sturgis   /   $549,000    /   3,476 sq ft /    1892

Tennessee

Gorgeous Italian style with amazing botanical-gardens-like landscaping. And to think this was built just two years after the end of the Civil War …. war of Northern Aggression, whatever. War was good business for somebody!

Nashville  /   $5,999,999    /   9,664 sq ft /    1867

Texas

“Dubya, if ya can’t getchyer dumbass elected to the White House … build one! We’re Texans, after all.”

Kerrville  /   $3,800,000    /    13,901 sq ft /    1920

Utah

Tell you what ….. house prices in UT are FREAKING RETARDED.  Holy Saint Moroni Macaroni!  I’ve seen bigger kitchens in RV’s!!  Damned Morons, errrr … Mormons.

Park City   / $4,100,000  /   3,009 sq ft /    1888

Vermont

Alrighty, then!  Look at the above house … compare it to this one …. and then I dare you to tell me the whole sate of Utah isn’t an overpriced piece of crapola junk.  I double-dare ya!!

Swanton   /   $1,150,000   /    5,947  sq ft /    1880

Virginia

The listing states —->  “After trips to Scotland, the owners fell in love with the game of golf and chose to have their own Private 18 Hole Golf Course built to USGA Standards.”  Awww, isn’t that special!

Upperville   /   $19,500,000    /    6,500  sq ft /   1903

Then they saw the move “My friend Flicka”  and got themselves a horse farm.

This is the owner, his wife (mixed marriage), and their four children.

Washington

One thing I’ve always wanted ….. a multi-million dollar house that sits on top of asphalt!  “They paved Paradise and put up a parking lot, yeah“.  Only in Libtardville, folks!

Seattle   /   $8,250,000    /    9,970 sq ft /     1902

West Virginia

If you don’t want any of your fatfuk relatives coming over and eating all your food … then this is the house you want.

Wheeling   /   $249,000    /    4,000  sq ft /    1889

Wisconsin

I’m just not a fan of Wisconsin.  At all. So, I’m not going to go with a nice property. I’m going with a very sad one … I’d rather live out of a van.   I know why I don’t like Cheeseheads. It’s a petty reason so, I won’t reveal it.  I don’t want ya’ll to think less of me than you already do.

Ettrick   /   $89,900    /    3,736 sq ft /     1920

Wyoming

As I said in my other homes article … Wyoming really IS God’s Country.  20 acres of heaven facing the Big Horn Mountains and a creek running through the property.

Sheridan   /   $1,375,000 /    4,074 sq ft /    1920

CLOSING BONUS PICTURE

Many believe this is the most talked about and photographed  Victorian house in the United States.  It’s located in Eureka, California, and was built in 1884 by William Carson, a lumber baron.

I grew up playing on House Island (the Maine mansion). One side of the island is the private estate, the other if Fort Scammel (active 1808-1898). It’s mostly granite bunkers, but as kids, we loved it.

Your missing out not including houses built in the 20’s. I have a pantry with a hidden release that will swing out the shelving that exposes another set of shelves that are 8″ deep. There is a hidden release on the fireplace that opens the end of the ornate carved fireplace mantle. It came complete with a draw rod to pull items from the back so they could be retrieved. I have a Prohibition house that had numerous secret compartments and hideaways.

Lived in Blowing Rock, NC for 32 years…got tired of the snow several years ago. The house shown is way out of town and not accessible year round. Unless you have a D6 to plow the road.

If the Camden SC house were in South Of Broad Charleston, it’d sell in a week for $3MM+. Average price there is $600-700/sq ft. Ouch

Stuck, way back in 2007 I sold a house in Petersham MA, which is basically 5 minutes from nowhere.
This was a super cool house, built in 1760 it was the home of Shay’s Rebellion. The barn was built from hemlock, and pre-dated the house.

The house was named The Deer Farm and has a beautiful bronze deer statue in the front.
6213 square feet, it had 11 working fireplaces. Servants quarters still fairly intact on the attic level.

Sadly it’s been “remodeled” over the years and is now for sale again for $870,000 (It sold in 2007 for $500,000 when I had it listed) and has been on the market for almost a year.

At one time this house was on probably over a hundred acres, then whittled down to 15, then 5.66, and now it’s on a paltry 2.95.

The current owners put in a fairly nice in-ground pool and pool house with kitchen, which seems a waste of space to me when you can only use a pool in MA for about 40 seconds the entire year.

This part of the world we have a LOT of houses built before 1900, and many of them are toilet “triple decker” fire traps with balloon framing which is another way of saying “no one gets out alive in the event of a fire”.

The rest are small capes or Colonials, generally 3000 square feet and under. Many of them have been maintained with original features but updated things like electrical and plumbing. The worst ones were gutted and renovated in the 80’s, a wasteland of pink rugs and ugly wall paper.

Anyone moving to New England from pretty much any other part of the country is baffled by so many things when buying a house. I’ll never forget my ex husband being completely stumped when seeing a steam radiator for the first time (He was from Georgia, heat comes from a vent in the wall, and the thought of having a giant tank of oil in the basement seemed downright crazy to him).

I’m from Georgia and have seen plenty of steam radiators . All old schools had them. And oil furnaces were right common, up until a few years ago , when most those that died off weren’t replaced.

Nice work Stuckey, it looks like the country is full of overpriced shit right now. And when the boomer variant finally flatness the curve then look out below. The demographics required to sustain such over inflated houses looks to be unsustainable. Unless Uncle Jo decides to just give a house to every “Newcomer” free of charge. Right after they slap a national property tax on everyone to pay for all these flu shots.

I had only a vague idea where Pearce AZ was even having driven through there a time or two. If I liked punishing myself living that close to the border I would pick Bisbee. Now that is a helluva town.

Thats a nice SW style. It looks a ways away from the action of downtown. As nice as that style house is I can say for certain I will never have a flat roof again, hated the maintenance and they always eventually leak. They are usually brick or adobe which makes for a cool bullet-proof doom-stead.

Having now lived in a small town > 5k for going on ten years I probably won’t ever go back to big city liven. Always wanted to live in Bisbee since I was a kid. Not many places in Az have basements but a lot of those buildings on Main Street do. Unbelievable amount of history there. You’re only about half hour from Tombstone. If you ever get out this way I will show you some cool shit amigo.

The 20 something son of a friend of my wife’s was just found robbed and murdered there. River street is a dangerous place. The local news is full of vibrant attack stories. I know of one personally.

Stucky- I hope you do move to KY, I asked you to come visit a while back. You would LOVE it here, all my NY and NJ clients love this place. They would not consider going back to Yankeeland…….no way.

There are so many fine 100 y/o mansions here and you picked that green ugly thing, yuk. Why not use the Harrodsburg home with the big columns again, I actually know that house well even before your last pictorial.

Come on down Stuck, we will welcome you with open arms my friend. We may have battled for years but in real life we could be great pals.

Maine, Wyoming, Kansas… to many really…

The important things, to me, would be the space to grow… and the ease of posting signs warning that trespassers are now in range, about a 1/2 mile out.

Wondering WHY there are nearly three times the number of bathrooms than bedrooms. Do uber wealthy people not have the ability to retain themselves or are they like a typical 4 yr old who waits until the very last minute and needs a bathroom like NOW… Do shrubbery count as bathrooms??

Kitchens were not part of an abode.
The bonus picture is stupid, ridiculous and this is a seriously funny article. Thanks, Stucky.

Been there, that was their summer house. After everybody drops dead from the vax, all of us holdouts could move in the Biltmore Estate. There is a winery on the property. “Winning”

That’s twice now that you did the shithole St Louis. KC is also a shithole, just a bit less of a shithole, minutely. Like milligrams. However lookee here in Liberty Mo (not terrible), under a million.

This Classic Greek Revival, 26 room, 8 bedroom mansion, built by Mayor Alvan Lightburne in 1848, is a 3-story home with walkout basement. The 2-story portico with lower veranda overlooks the side yard and in-ground pool. With approximately 8000 square feet of living space, it’s one of the largest and oldest restored Antebellum mansions in the Kansas City area. Oak flooring overlays original pine wood. 24 exterior walls and 18 interior walls of handmade brick, 12′ ceilings, wide doorways & tall windows give testament to quality workmanship.

IIRC, Liberty is home to William Jewell College, which used to be a good place to get a liberal arts education if one were so inclined. Not too far away is a quaint town on the Missouri River-Platte City. Still a slice of what Americana used to be. Probably has a couple of nice old houses without huge asking prices. Jesse James and his gang used to roam the area.

Indiana: you obviously missed the metal storage shed, size 8′ x’10’, Monkey Ward, circa 1972. Adds untold amounts of value to the property.
