Most do not understand what he really said
The likes of Orwell want that rife to STAY on the wall and never used.
The Afghans did not keep their rifles on the wall.
Jayzus, OF COURSE the likes of Orwell (and anyone who has ever carried a rifle to war) wanted that rifle to STAY on the wall and never be used. Don’t you?
George Orwell carried a rifle into a war. Have you?
I think it is YOU who doesn’t understand what he “really said.” The “likes of Orwell” know exactly what it fucking means when Blue Collar Joe Six-Pack takes that rifle down off the hook and resolves to use it in defense of his home and his tribe and “democracy.”
It means he is going to fight. It means he is willing to kill. It means he is willing to die in combat for what he believes to be truth. It means he is out of peaceful alternatives. It means war on a personal level.
It also means civil war. Like the one Orwell fought in. Like the one he took a bullet in. Bloody, terrible, chaotic, likely without end, and without mercy or remorse.
Necessary? Maybe. I hold that to everything, there is a season, and the American summer is ending. But you don’t take your rifle down from over the hearth and load it until you intend to kill with it.
Orwell was writing from personal experience. And he was right.

I remember reading about Yugoslavia and how Marshal Tito told his soldiers to take their rifles home at the end of WWII. When Stalin threatened, Tito told him to expect at least 1 million casualties, as every man in the country was armed.
The Swiss have a militia consisting of every able bodied man who have their service rifles stored at home. To my knowledge, Switzerland has not been invaded in a very long time. Of course, their terrain helps.
If we ever give up our arms, we are doomed to be servants to our masters.
