THIS DAY IN HISTORY – FDR introduces the lend-lease program – 1941

VIA HISTORY.COM

On January 10, 1941, Franklin Roosevelt introduces the lend-lease program to Congress. The plan was intended to help Britain beat back Hitler’s advance while keeping America only indirectly involved in World War II.

As Roosevelt addressed Congress, the Battle of Britain was in its full destructive swing and Hitler seemed on the verge of invading Great Britain. The cash-strapped Brits desperately needed airplanes, tanks and ships to fight Hitler’s imminent invasion. For months, Britain’s prime minister, Winston Churchill, had begged Roosevelt for help, but the president was committed to abiding by Americans’ wishes to stay out of another bloody world war.

The lend-lease program provided for military aid to any country whose defense was vital to the security of the United States. The plan thus gave Roosevelt the power to lend arms to Britain with the understanding that, after the war, America would be paid back in kind. Congress overwhelmingly accepted the plan, which only staunch isolationists opposed. Roosevelt’s program enabled the U.S. military to prepare for the growing threat of Japan on its Pacific flank while helping Britain to contain Hitler across the Atlantic, as it permitted aid to Europe without committing American troops that might be needed in a Pacific war. Even though Roosevelt’s plan did not require immediate repayment, the United States commandeered what was left of Britain’s gold reserves and overseas investments to help pay for the increased defense production.

With the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Japan forced the entry of the United States into the war. Roosevelt then recognized the strategic advantage of also supplying the Soviet Union with arms under lend-lease in order to draw Hitler’s resources away from Western Europe. This gave the United States a better chance at fighting a war on two fronts while planning for an invasion to liberate Europe. Roosevelt, mindful of the inherent conflict between American democracy and Soviet communism, counted on using U.S. military aid to the Soviet Union as a bargaining chip in post-war diplomatic relations.

By the end of the war the United States had given more than $50 billion in armaments and financial support to Britain, the U.S.S.R. and 37 other countries. The lend-lease program laid a foundation for the post-war Marshall Plan, which provided aid to European nations to help rebuild their economies after two devastating world wars.

FDR was a Bolshevik asset, committed treason and should have been hanged along with his Joint Chiefs of Staff and the rest of his evil administration. There are no measures with which to gauge the damage Roosevelt and his gang of international criminals did to the security and prosperity of our once sovereign nation

Dedicated to young Americans-May you benefit from observing how certain shadowy forces contrive to ruthlessly advance their own financial and ideological objectives at your expense. They select, then groom, and ultimately control many of our highest government officials. They plan the wars and through “foreign policy” arrange to set the stage for incidents to initiate hostilities. They overwork the word “Peace” to mislead you and create a plausible smoke screen in order to conceal their real operations. You can recognize who “they” are.
Hence, I say, young Americans, be alerted-be more effective than my unsuspecting and bemused generation.. Sally-forth, defend and preserve for yourself and those who follow you our great heritage of freedom and liberty.

My reason for writing this book is very simple: I would like to keep the record straight. I want to put in permanent form. the full story of my experiences as a Lend-Lease expediter and liaison officer with the Russians during the war, when I served for two crucial years, from May 1942 to Lune 1944, both at Newark Airport and at the big air base at Great Falls, Montana.

I went into the Army as a businessman in my forties and a veteran of World War I. From the first, as my story shows, I worked wholeheartedly on behalf of the Russians because, like everyone else, I considered it my duty to do so. That they were satisfied with my efforts is indicated by the fact that it was Colonel Kotikov, head of the Russian mission at Great Falls, who requested my promotion to Major.

But the tremendous volume of Lend-Lease material going through under “diplomatic immunity,” the infiltration of SOviet agents through the Pipeline, the shipments of non- supplies and even military secrets, were more than I could stomach. I finally protested through proper channels, first in Great Falls, and then in Washington; nothing happened. This was in 1944, while I was still in the Army.

Thx Rossa. I knew the beautiful Jennie came from big money. The you know, (((The Thing))) is new to me.

I also knew little Winston wrote the most heart-wrenching letters seeking attention from his gadabout socialite parents. Something on the order of ‘Dear Mummy and Daddy, your little boy misses you terribly and longs to see you both…’ He was a very unhappy boy.

My grandfather was Captain of HMS Speaker a lend lease carrier and used to accompany the Atlantic Convoys. The crew picked up the unfinished ship from Vancouver. It had barely done any sea trials. They then had to sail it South and through the Panama Canal and North to New York. In those days comms between Brits and Yanks were sometimes the cause of some hilarity. A family story (if I remember it right) was that they sent a cable to NY to say that the ‘wheel’ had broken. The Mayor met them at the quayside and they put on a ticker tape parade because only the Brits could sail a ship with no steering and get it there on time. Not sure what the gerrymandered repair was that ensured they made it on time, but they did it.

My Dad had been evacuated to America during the was and came back on HMS Speaker from NY that time. He said it was heavily laden with planes and was a bit hard going in rough seas but he and his cousin and siblings had great fun on board. I believe there was a story of some mischief with a gun turret but that’s another story.

Would Notre Dame have been burned by Muslims if Germany had retained control of France?

Japan “forced the entry” of the US into the war, haha…Which FDR and his Jew dominated regime had worked 3 years to achieve by blockading Japanese oil shipments…
