The 1960’s: In Lancaster County PA many of the high schools had rifle clubs and the schools provided the .22 rifles. Some of the schools had rifle ranges or used local gun club ranges. Many of the high school color guards had old military rifles and they were usually painted white

Some time before 1960, my brother and I ( we were about 10 years old) walked to the Jax Fl bus line and rode the bus to town; we each bought a .22 rifle from a pawn shop and brought it home on the bus; nothing unusual.

Is that special? It was just west of downtown, past the barber college, low buildings and small shops along the bus routes. Crowds of people waited for the busses along that long stretch of road & sidewalk.

If I could go back to the ’60s, I’d bring back the United States that existed up until November 21, 1963 … before the shit really hit the fan — starting with LBJ’s taking the oath of office the next day and all the destruction that he and his policies brought upon US.

Is it still AF-1 if the President is dead and boxed in the cabin and the new guy hasn’t been sworn in yet? Seems to me, the aircraft designation only became AF-1 after Johnson removed his hand from the Bible…

…but that’s one of those grey-ass areas.

If I could go back to the ’60s, I would shoot LBJ in the head until the clip emptied. Not kidding. Then I would avoid arrest by immediately coming back to the present.

Of course, these time travel situations always involve tricky conundrums. What if LBJ boinked my mom and produced me? If I killed LBJ, wouldn’t I immediately cease to exist also? Fuckit, I’d shoot him anyway. One of the worst presidents in American history.

When I was in my first job out of school, I used to fly Braniff Airlines and loved them. They had wild colored planes and the most gorgeous stewardesses who were also quite friendly. I will never forgive American Airlines for putting the nail in their coffin. AA’s stewardesses were typically older, frumpy women with zero fun genes. Thank goodness Southwest came to town soon after the demise of Braniff and it was back to good looking stewardesses who made the flight fun.

We did not have shooting clubs, but in HS, all of the guys carried shotguns in their vehicles from the start of dove season September 1 until the end of quail season February 28 and most of the vehicles were not even locked.

We had no shooting clubs, but we had rednecks and every redneck had a rifle, shotgun , pistol or very often multiples of each, in his car or truck, just for general purpose. People assumed that if you were male and breathing, you could shoot.
But that was then, this is now. All the rednecks are long gone and the proof of this, if you happen to be a native Southron, is obvious.
There are no bullet holes in highway signs. When I was young, every rural speed limit and stop sign was riddled with bullets holes. I really miss rednecks….you see, times was different then…

Yup. Every Thursday would head off to school with my books, lunch and rife. A Mossberg 144LS. We were fortunate to have the range in the basement of the high school.Of course we were kinda backwards back then as we only shot paper targets, not each other….

South Okanagan High School, before it burned down a few years back had a small range in the basement. Anyone that was a hunter back then had the rifles in their vehicles, I had a 68 gmc 4×4 then and two rifles in the back window, 270 and 22. And nobody ever locked their doors. The school had a few rifles for those that didn’t have a gun and I think they were all .22’s.

There was a shooting club and instructions during certain times of the year when it was either rifles or bows, you had a choice. I’m sure they don’t have rifle instruction anymore but I think they ‘teach’ bow still… not sure.

In shop class my senior year in 79 we each got a small block Ford, Chevy, or Pontiac engine from the junkyard and rebuilt it. I built a mild mannered 351 Windsor. The block was bored .030″ over and I was able to reuse the crank. The local NAPA auto parts co-sponsored the program with the guy that had an auto junkyard.

IT ALL DEPENDED ON WHAT PART THE THE COUNTRY YOU LIVED IN. MOST MAJOR CITY SCHOOLS DID NOT HAVE GUN CLUBS AND IF THEY DID THE FIRE ARMS WERE 22 LONG RIFLE BOLT ACTION AND SCHOOL HAD INDOOR RANGES USUAL IN THE BASEMENT. BUT RURAL COMMUNITIES WERE A DIFFERENT MATTER, YES THERE WERE GUN CLUBS AT SCHOOLS AND MANY STUDENT IN HIGH SCHOOL IF THEY OWNED A PICKUP TRUCK HAD GUN RACKS. DURING HUNTING SEASON THOSE RACKS CARRIED RIFLES OR SHOTGUNS FOR HUNTING AFTER SCHOOL OR EVEN EARLY MORING BEFORE SCHOOL STARTED. SURPRISINGLY THERE WERE NO MASS SHOOTINGS. BUT LIKE I STATED EARLIER I MY COMMENT, IT JUST DEPENDED WHERE YOU LIVED IN THE COUNTRY.

In Australia, some of the schools had army cadet training. Not unusual for a student to carry a .303 rifle on the train.
