The Ruby Ridge (Randy Weaver) Trial: An Account

In the second day of a standoff at Randy Weaver’s remote northern Idaho cabin atop Ruby Ridge, FBI sharpshooter Lon Horiuchi wounds Randy Weaver and Kevin Harris, and then kills Weaver’s wife, Vicki.

Randy Weaver, an alleged white supremacist, had been targeted by the federal government for selling two illegal sawed-off shotguns to an undercover Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) informant. On August 21, 1992, after a period of surveillance, U.S. marshals came upon Harris, Weaver, Weaver’s 14-year-old son Sammy and the family dog on a road near the Weaver property. A marshal shot and killed the dog, prompting Sammy to fire at the marshal. In the ensuing gun battle, Sammy and U.S. Marshal William Degan were shot and killed. A tense standoff ensued, and on August 22 the FBI joined the marshals besieging Ruby Ridge.

Later that day, Harris, Weaver, and his daughter, Sarah, left the cabin, allegedly for the purpose of preparing Sammy’s body for burial. FBI sharpshooter Lon Horiuchi, waiting 200 yards away, opened fire, allegedly because he thought Harris was armed and intending to fire on a helicopter in the vicinity. Horiuchi wounded Weaver, and the group ran to the shed where Sammy’s body was lying. When they attempted to escape back into the cabin, Horiuchi fired again, wounding Harris as he dove through the door and killing Vicki Weaver, who was holding the door open with one hand and cradling her infant daughter with the other. Horiuchi claimed he didn’t know that Vicki Weaver was standing behind the door. Harris, Weaver and Weaver’s three daughters surrendered nine days later.

The controversial standoff spawned a nationwide debate on the use of force by federal law enforcement agencies, and a U.S. Senate panel accused the federal agencies involved of “substantial failures” in their handling of the Ruby Ridge operation.

“… character traits exhibited by serial killers or criminals may be observed in many within the political arena. They share the traits of psychopaths who are not sensitive to altruistic appeals, such as sympathy for their victims or remorse or guilt over their crimes. Is it any wonder that America is failing at home and world-wide?”

Question: Who was attorney general during Ruby Ridge?

William Pelham Barr was the Attorney General of the United States during the Ruby Ridge standoff and siege in 1992.

William Barr’s Connection to Ruby Ridge, Defending FBI Snipers

Barr received a routine questionnaire from the Judiciary Committee asking him to disclose his past work including pro bono activities “serving the disadvantaged.” The “disadvantaged” that Barr spent the most time helping was an FBI agent who slayed an Idaho mother holding her baby in 1992. Barr spent two weeks organizing former Attorneys General and others to support “an FBI sniper in defending against criminal charges in connection with the Ruby Ridge incident.” Barr also “assisted in framing legal arguments advanced… in the district court and the subsequent appeal to the Ninth Circuit,” he told the committee.

That charitable work (for an FBI agent who already had a federally-paid law firm defending him) helped tamp down one of the biggest scandals during Barr’s time as Attorney General from 1991 to early 1993. Barr was responsible for both the U.S. Marshals Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, two federal agencies whose misconduct at Ruby Ridge “helped to weaken the bond of trust that must exist between ordinary Americans and our law enforcement agencies,” according to a 1995 Senate Judiciary Committee report.

This is the same FBI Hostage Rescue team they sent to Mar a Lago. Manslaughter charges against Lon Horiuchi were dropped in 2001. The shooter remains in hiding.

Define “bad enough”.

So … I’d guess that it’s fair to say that the new ‘armed and dangerous’ IRS agents (armed and willing to use deadly force) will be trained at Quantico by the FBI … using Ruby Ridge and Waco and other past events as case studies on how to terrorize the public into submission … just in case the next FauciFlu variant doesn’t do the job …

this is a statement put out today by the libertarian party—

30 years ago today, the FBI executed an innocent woman at Ruby Ridge. The event epitomized the agency’s reckless behavior, which still goes unchecked today. Abolishing the FBI is the only solution to the madness.

As Federal agents scouted the area for a place to ambush Randy Weaver, who they suspected of selling illegal weapons, they encountered and murdered Weaver’s 14-year-old son Samuel, who was with family friend Kevin Harris.

The next day, with the secluded Weaver residence surrounded, agents wounded Weaver and killed his wife, Vicki, as she held their infant daughter.

After an 11-day siege, civilian negotiators were able to convince Weaver and Harris to surrender, ending the now infamous Idaho standoff. Weaver was later acquitted of the most serious charges, while Harris was acquitted of all charges.

Ruby Ridge shifted America’s perspective on government power and the danger federal agencies pose to civilians. Unfortunately, these agencies still terrorize American citizens with immunity to this day.

The Libertarian Party continues to call for the abolition of the FBI, CIA, ATF, and other federal agencies that have historically been weaponized against the American people. We have always been the party standing up to these tyrants. With your support, we will continue to grow our voice and ability to stand with all peaceful people against government aggression.

there are still people here in Bonners Ferry and Naples Idaho that remember, and hate the fib. The homestead is completely gone now and no trace left but in the memories of the locals. Last I heard, the Weavers are in Montana. I moved here about 11 years ago at the base of RR near Naples.
