(My summary of an article in the NJ shit Ledger). Chaz Andrews is 29 years old. He’s been trying to get into the US Army since he was 19. He failed the academic test more than 10 times. But, now he has a chance to pass thanks to a new Army program that gives low performing recruits up to 90 days of academic and/or fitness training to help them meet military standards. If Chaz is able to raise his test score he will be allowed to continue on to basic training.
The program, which was started this year, is one way the Army is hoping to fill its ranks as it struggles with recruiting efforts, which are falling dramatically short (as high as 25%). The Army is blaming it on Covid, low unemployment, and better paying jobs in the private sector. Yeah, that, and the fact only 23% of people aged between 17 – 24 are physically, mentally, or morally fit to serve without receiving some kind of waiver.
Inside one of the classes are 30 recruits in Army fatigues in their first week of the three week course. On the blackboard, “TAXES” is scrawled in large letters. The students will be taught how to figure out math problems based on a 6% sales tax. Later in the course students will tackle more advanced topics such as rates of speed, how long it will take to travel certain distances.
Other classes teach reading comprehension and vocabulary. Recruits who failed the fitness test will get classes on nutrition, exercise, physical therapy, sleep habits, and other valuable information on safely losing weight. While all this sounds terribly grueling (sarcasm) they will also get plenty of breaks, personal time, and opportunities to post their successes on social media.
The instructors are former drill sergeants. But, gone are the stereotypical screaming and abrasive hard-asses. The Army now wants instructors to be more casual (they even wear ball caps during class), personal, and with gentler temperaments and good communication skills. It’s all about “speaking, teaching, and reaching”!
On of the biggest challenges for these recruits is getting up at 5AM. It is the Army, after all. They learn how to wear the uniform, march, and how to figure out ranks. (I am NOT making this shit up!).
At the end of the 3 weeks they take the Armed Services Voluntary Aptitude Battery. If they pass that, they can go to basic training … even if they still failed the physical standards. The base commander said that many of these students struggle with test-taking skills. So, right before the test, the Army has a Test Prep Course. Naturally. If the recruit fails the test …. they can take the three week course FOUR more times!
Lt. William Paschall, a math instructor, is most pleased with the results. At the start of the week, he asked how many understood the problem on the board and only a few hands went up. When presented with the same problem at the end of the week, a lot more hands went up!
The base commander is ecstatic. He believes the program can be expanded to three other bases across the United States, and he believes 10,000 students can pass the test. But, wait!!! I haven’t gotten to the really crazy fucked-up shit yet. Here ya go, quoted verbatim;
“Other changes could broaden the coarse so that those who fail BOTH the physical fitness requirements and the scholastic test might still be able to get in.”

I had to deal with many of the soldiers who were “just above” this level of incompetence as a young Lieutenant in the early 80’s. Many “sad” cases of men just near retirement who had been busted for drugs or DUI and whom most had been promoted beyond their competency. As a squad leader I had to chapter out a fuckup I later found out had failed the ASVAB ten times before his recruiter cheated for him. I also worked with several like myself that were 99th percentile.

I have seen more 500 pound, toothless, tattooed imbeciles than I ever imagined could exist. I have seen homeless terrorize businesses. And this is the first time I would have ever said the US is more expensive than Oz. And it isn’t even close. The US is horrifically expensive at the moment. What costs $1 in Aussie dollar costs about $1.50 US – or twice the price when the exchange rates are considered. And the fucking taxes and fees are outrageous. I can go in and on. You already need to be fairly dumb to want to just join the Army, and I’m only talking about that branch. Now if you aim to be a Ranger or Green Beret or even further Delta Force, then that does make a huge difference. But test-wise (I think they call it ASVAP or something similar). I took it for the Navy years and years ago but was medically disqualified. Anyway, you can be pretty damn stupid and get in, so this person must really be mentally challenged.
