“The New Normal”: New York To Lower Math And English Proficiency Standards Due To Poor Test Result

Authored by Jonathan Turley,

recently wrote how public educators and unions were methodically killing public education. The best example this week comes from New York where a school board committee has solved the dismal math and reading scores for children in the system . . .  they lowered the standards. This is not the first system to gut its standards rather than improve its quality of education.

As teachers and unions object to school choice, they continue to make the case for private education.

Parents are increasingly voting with their feet.

The board is simply calling the lack of proficiency “the new normal” and changing the standards. Done.

New York will permanently lower the math and reading proficiency standards after embarrassing results in state testing. It is akin to shortening the 100 yards dash to 50 yards to stay competitive on speed.

The media reported that

“A scoring committee that reports to the Board of Regents said Monday that they must take into account the results of last year’s tests for students in grades three through eight. Some schools posted shocking results — in Schenectady, no eighth grader who took the math test scored as proficient. And the scores for the third through eighth grade tests throughout the state were much lower in 2022 than in 2019, a result no doubt of the absence of in-person learning during the first year and beyond of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

This may seem insane to anyone with a proficiency in logic, but it is being shrugged off by many in New York. There is now an acceptance that the public schools cannot actually educate students to proficiency levels needed to succeed in the modern world. In the meantime, some districts are moving to a four-day work week for teachers to reduce stress.

We previously discussed the elimination of gifted and talented programs to achieve equity by artificially lowering everyone to the same level.

Other schools have eliminated the “F” to guarantee 100 percent passage rates.

Still others have suspended proficiency standards to simply graduate students who cannot reach required levels in writing, math, and English.

There is also a move to end standardized testing.

In a prior column, I was particularly moved by the frustration of a mother in Baltimore recently who complained that her son was in the top half of his class despite failing all but three of his classes. Graduating students without proficiency in English or Math is the worst possible path for these students, schools and society.

It is the dumbing down of America but administrators, boards, and unions insist that it is better for these students, who face dismal prospects for future employment. In the meantime, we are pouring billions into schools that cannot produce a single proficient student in basic subjects. If this were a business, there would be criminal fraud charges across the nation.

It validates Dinesh D Souza’s contention that the democratic party is just as racist as they were during slavery. Add this to a list that includes Memphis and Chicago’s public schools where announced educational failure is the new normal. All black-run cities that are the very base of the democratic party. Memphrica is in Shelby County and up until a few years ago had its own school system (MCS) with separate taxing authority, boards, administrations, etc. They had several schools that could not meet minimum standards. At the same time, Shelby County schools (SCS) had several schools that were in the top tier of the state’s schools.

MCS decided they would give up their school charter so SCS would have to take them over. Several of the Shelby County suburban cities quickly voted to set up their own school systems. The voters of Memphrica thought that the same people who had run MCS into the ground would be good people to put on the SCS board and lo and behold a half dozen years in, SCS is in the bottom of the state’s schools.

Bottom line is the high performing schools went independent, raising taxes on their citizens, but they still have high performing schools. The SCS schools that were not in the suburban areas went from moderately successful schools to poor performing due to the lack of leadership from the Board and Administration

You cannot give a bunch of self-entitled colored people power and expect anything other than failure. But it is the fault of the suburban schools that the results of SCS sank so quickly.

Hence white flight to DeSoto County, MS. And to Collierville, TN, where Dean & Turner Wingo (Starksville frat bros) would never allow such crap to happen…I think).

I’m not familiar with the Wingo’s. Are they DeSoto County?
Collierville now has one of the best public schools in the county and a new high school that is state of the art. I was living there until the County Commission decided to give the Grizzlies a $1/4 Billion basketball arena. Moved out of the county and my property taxes were cut 60% on 5 acres and a much larger brand new house. Sometimes I regret moving so far out, but other times I worry that I’m not far enough away from Memphrica.

Mayor Cox kept Collierville a sleepy little bedroom community for many years, but the developers have taken over and it is growing like a weed and like weeds, producing some bad seeds.

DeSoto County is the fastest growing county in MS. A house I lived in on the outskirts of Olive Branch 30 years ago is now pretty much dead center of the city.

Just thinking this out, I fully expect that once enough people have pulled their kids out of public schools, and the schools all start crying that they are losing money, our “government” will then put ungodly taxes on homeschooling, or withhold/subtract a certain amount of homeschoolers’ salaries (or both). Then, all that money will be funneled through dirty hands until what is left goes back into their Indoctrination Centers, er, schools I mean.

This is not too far from what is happening now anyway.

There is nothing in the Constitution about education so it is a state issue. There were few if any public schools the first hundred years of this country and literacy, actual literacy was higher than today.

The Articles of Confederation was usurped in 1787 by the CONstitution.. It was a coup d’etat. Even if the CONstitution were legitimate, then the following would still be true:

“But whether the Constitution really be one thing, or another, this much is certain – that it has either authorized such a government as we have had, or has been powerless to prevent it. In either case it is unfit to exist.”
― Lysander Spooner, No Treason: The Constitution of No Authority
https://www.goodreads.com/work/quotes/2095916-no-treason-the-constitution-of-no-authority

Plus:
http://www.sobran.com/reluctant.shtml
EXCERPT:
Hans-Hermann Hoppe . . . argued that no constitution could restrain the state. Once its monopoly of force was granted legitimacy, constitutional limits became mere fictions it could disregard; nobody could have the legal standing to enforce those limits. The state itself would decide, by force, what the constitution “meant,” steadily ruling in its own favor and increasing its own power. This was true a priori, and American history bore it out.

What if the Federal Government grossly violated the Constitution? Could states withdraw from the Union? Lincoln said no. The Union was “indissoluble” unless all the states agreed to dissolve it. As a practical matter, the Civil War settled that. The United States, plural, were really a single enormous state, as witness the new habit of speaking of “it” rather than “them.”

So the people are bound to obey the government even when the rulers betray their oath to uphold the Constitution. The door to escape is barred. Lincoln in effect claimed that it is not our rights but the state that is “unalienable.” And he made it stick by force of arms. No transgression of the Constitution can impair the Union’s inherited legitimacy. Once established on specific and limited terms, the U.S. Government is forever, even if it refuses to abide by those terms.

As Hoppe argues, this is the flaw in thinking the state can be controlled by a constitution. Once granted, state power naturally becomes absolute. Obedience is a one-way street. Notionally, “We the People” create a government and specify the powers it is allowed to exercise over us; our rulers swear before God that they will respect the limits we impose on them; but when they trample down those limits, our duty to obey them remains.

BTW, the 17th Amendment helped shift power away from the states and toward the fedgov.

Baltimore City School System has got this one beat already awarding diplomas to 1.6 GPA SCORE !
Graduating with the cognitive power lower than WHALE SHIT !
Once the shining example of what a public school system should be when it was a majority white population in the city now it’s a pathetic laughing stock !
Baltimore’s school budget spends more per student than any other system of similar size . It also has more administrators paid over $100K per year thanks to the city reps in the Maryland State legislator being able to pull the race card for funding the school budget gets 80% of its funding from taxpayers who would rarely if ever enter the nigger shit hole that is Baltimore !
So much for that “YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR” !
If state and federal funding ended , especially section 8 housing vouchers for rent (welfare for landlords) the city would be an apocalyptic explosion in a month overflowing into the surrounding communities and that’s really already taking place dragging down the county systems on all levels

It is time to take your school boards or College and University presidents and staff to task for falling for the woke idiology that is passing for education in our education centers. When you push for “Equity”, (and have no idea what equity is) you failed, because instead of standing strong for equality of opportunity you want “Equal Outcomes” when humans have never been able to pull that off, because there is no such thing as Equality of Outcomes.

The teachers in many Northern Illinois school districts approach and exceed 100K in salary, then include benefits, a retirement at 55 and 3% increases every year to their pensions. Many will make more in retirement than they did ‘teaching’. Add in the huge salary increases their last 5 years of teaching and their starting pensions can be close to 100K.

Many will go through some diploma mill to get useless Masters degrees to further increase their salary. Many of the schools also have curriculum coaches, which earn huge salaries. Why would a teacher with a Masters degree need additional coaching to teach?

The elementary schools are loaded with immigrant kids who can’t- or won’t – speak English. “Woke” administrators forced my decision to quit, as did coming home with headaches from dealing with unmanageable kids who couldn’t sit or behave for less than a ten minute, half mile ride to the nearest elementary school …

I quit, and wasn’t the only one to do so. I know for a fact the board voted to raise the pay over thirty percent to $30/hr. for a 180 day school year and STILL can’t find people with a CDL B and the right endorsements to deal with this shit.
