A Cohort of Merlins

Guest Post by Diogenes’ Dung

After commenting on Jim Kunstler’s The Season is Here https://www.theburningplatform.com/2023/03/24/the-season-is-here/, members of this community announced that my season for contributing was here. Thank you, Mary Christine, hardscrabble farmer, and BL for the nudge.

People, with few exceptions, are herd animals. Jim has declared that this is the season for an animal stampede. Some tipping point of pattern recognition and collective agony would, any day now, fire-hose our constipated, three-year meal of malarky from every media-puckered orifice and awaken us from our hypnotized torpor. No longer a sluggish, directionless clog of indecision, we on the right side of the Totalitarian Control Line will charge en masse toward neocons on the other side to reestablish fair governance on a shining hill. Magically, without a leader.

Even lemmings have a leader. I commented that Jim hadn’t identified the Merlin whose government-altering incantations would “finally and magically come to the public’s attention”. Two if by sea announced “WE ARE THE MERLIN.”, a premise so ludicrous it trumpeted a writer’s challenge that rings like the tinnitus in my ears. I’d like to think it’s so, but it’s difficult for me to imagine a merry band of Merlins marching into an orderly paradigm when so many people are without a ‘we’ to cohort with to anywhere. It is my self-assigned task. Thank you, Two if by sea, for taking me to task.

In our season of doubting everything, we have lost family, friends, neighborhoods, communities and faith in any national outcome that reunite us. There must be, in the magical panorama of the universe’s limitless possibilities, a path to union for humanity and maybe even families but I’m careful about what I ask the universe to give me from the skinny tail-end of probability. Humanity in Union would require a cataclysm on a scale so enormous it erased all differences of opinion that hinder survival. Wouldn’t it be easier to let millennia of natural selection and Pfizer DNA-twisting to phase-out the chimp-outs?

Seasons of doubt are much easier to write about than those brimming with optimism. Everybody has doubts; they’re familiar and somehow more comfortable to abide than hope. Doubt rarely disappoints us. Any writer with muscle will take a deep breath before hoisting an idea whose weight is onerous, unfamiliar, looking like a dead-end. Writers tend to find a good rut and stay in it. In this season, ‘We’ exerts a planetary pull on those who are alone, searching for a cohort marching home. That’s me, hyperventilating, getting ready to lift ‘WE’.

‘WE” no matter who says it, doesn’t include everybody. We is always subset of humanity with specific markers. A silent nod to animals who’ve forgotten more about ‘WE’ than I can remember. Animals frequently act with cohesive uniformity. Rarely does any human group act uniformly or with cohesion. LGBTQ’s lined up to infinity will never include me in in their ‘WE’. Most lesbians doesn’t consider trannies part of their ’WE’. They see shallow interlopers grabbing girl’s sports trophies while being crowned by media with accolades of “Most Womanly” for pretending to hate their dicks. Even the Lesbian Cohort won’t ride that Woke baloney pony.

Media changes age-related perspectives as often as Kardashian clothing fashions. Today, few aspire to live like their parents. Two centuries ago the world din’t change much between generations. Life went on the same as it always had and few imagined anything different. My father was the last generation to plow a cotton field behind a mule. “OK Boomer” will be the last generation to be blamed for everyfuckedupthing if we don’t all become a Cohort of Merlins, cast off the media spells and rout government trolls from beneath the bridges that join us. Those bridges are traditions that respect the sacrifices and achievements of those who prepared the world we were born into. Media celebrates every toppled icon from Alexander the Great to Mahatma Ghandi and every banned author of great ideas from Pericles to Pocahontas.

Shared, pan-generational perspectives are now nearly impossible. Where are the communities bonded by traditions and customs that develop independent adults whose exercise of will is not confined by another’s view of the world? Not in any major metropolitan area of the USA and religious communities don’t encourage exercise of free will. The freedom to be anything we want means a completely different thing today than it did when I was a lad. I knew I could be President of the United States if I became as great a man as George Washington. Today, POTUS must be a person of color with a transexual spouse or an Adderal’d idiot with a pole-dancer’s grandchild. How can the Universe hold any possibility sprouting a Cohort of Merlins from this fetid yeast?

Where is this ‘WE’, our Cohort of Merlins? TBP; Masochists Anonymous? Whoever, whatever, wherever they are, your inner Merlin is waiting to lead you to them. Unfortunately, everybody who says they can show you how to find your Merlin is a crackpot. No one person can show you, it is a lesson learned from everyone. The magical incantations from our Cohort of Merlins are only heard in our dreams, where everyone sings.

Everyone, no matter their age, relives magical moments, deja vu, where something inside leaps toward a nascent idea, lost feeling or deep longing like a cheetah after a gazelle. It could be triggered by a passage read, a song revisited, a smell from childhood or the passing of a loved one that opens us to something larger, captured in lost moments that once defined us, our family, our friends, our generation, our cohort. Each, in their own way, holds our deepest longing, be eternal, without age, without fear. Those magical moments burst from our subconscious like magma to remind us that we once cherished a different perspective from another time.

The arc of aging, seen from infancy in the faces of generations before us, doesn’t matter while crawling in in footy pajamas; age doesn’t exist. We are exploring our miraculous senses, seeing, touching, tasting, hearing, smelling all the things that define an ageless world. Our definition of the world changes with the concept of age; it becomes finite; magic fades from view.

Dreaming is the easiest, safest way to experience the Universe’s magical potential. If it can happen, it happens the dream world, including a Cohort of Merlins. And if you can’t make it happen there, you can’t make it happen anywhere. In our subconscious, every time line in every dimension is mapped (Akashic Records), one’s journey isn’t and every shortcut is a dead-end. The worst thing that can happen, if your will and thought control aren’t sufficient to limit what you manifest… maybe you’ll keep waking up inside a really bad dream, saying “Whew! I’m glad that’s over. “, and it won’t be.

I’ve only experienced a cohesive ‘WE’ in the subconscious, our timeless universe, where magic’s ingredients are harvested. In fact, ‘we’ gets quite sticky there. Everyone is there, connected in one way or another; a collective of pure chaos with an overarching order. Nobody is in charge. That’s OK, chaos is nature’s order, true liberty. Unfortunately, there, the exercise of free will is easily seduced and confused because rules and consequences are self-imposed, if at all. Anybody can do anything at any time and as your dreams have shown, you do things you cannot explain, imagine, or dare to reveal to your closest confidant.

That can make it difficult to find a ‘WE’ when one awakes. We hide our dream diary well as it begs to be burned in shame. There are no censors in the subconscious, that’s your conscious mind’s job and I’m grateful for its vigilance. Within, judgement has no gavel and only the strongest control of one’s thoughts creates a happy cohesion from its firmament. It embraces infinity, where happiness can appear to be accidental. Yet, oddly, it’s where the cynical can observe “…how five or six generational gaps could be bridged by a cohesive cohort of ageless Merlins.”

But be careful what you ask for, that outcome requires a cataclysm on a scale so enormous it will induce instant insanity in many. That’s what having one’s illusions stripped can do. There are too many great books and gifted authors that describe humanity’s next passage to miss the fact that our ship has sailed toward a new destination that includes a tempest unlike any before. Nobody gets out of that place without their hair turning white in a fortnight.

When time is stopped (wait for it) and the barriers between the conscious and subconscious are stripped, humanity will mark the day that the dead rose from the grave. The day our survival required us to became a Cohort of Merlins.

Exceptional first submission. I can see the influence of some regular contributors in your style, but it comes across as very authentic in its own right.

Well done.

The magical world is everywhere if you take the time to perceive it, not just in dreams. I see rough waters too, but more than that I see great opportunities for an even better future than anything we’ve had previously if we just keep doing what we were born to do. Allow the natural wold to be your guide and never question your instincts, you were born with them for a reason. And if you hear your conscience tell you no, then don’t.

Thank you, hsf, for emphasizing that there is magic in every moment and that our best leaders are our our own instincts and conscience.

If I were still in the 2nd grade, a year before I learned to read, I’d be erasing the names of regular contributors of homework and adding my own. I’d ‘borrow’ a little bit from all of them.

I’ve not yet met a farmer who believed in magic.

Sure, being born with instincts is all to the good, but humans aren’t born with many at all.

Our survival depends on our rational minds and memories of experience, and learning from the teaching of others.

You really do have a way with words. Similar to Uncola, I would say. He started here, too.

So do we need a leader or don’t we? I’m terribly cynical these days and I just go back to the thought that anyone who wants the job to lead is suspect.

We aren’t a cohesive tribe here in the US and we never were. Nevertheless , FedGov still fears us. Witness the Restrict Act they are trying to pass. See the post that T4C submitted. That’s a bill to control us using Tik Tok as the scape goat. So if we are going to do anything at all to keep what’s left of our freedom, we better do it now because the walls are quickly closing in.

By the way, did you have someone edit your essay? If you did, make them read it again and if you don’t, you need someone. Just a couple of typos that need to be fixed. But keep writing, particularly if you enjoy it. I don’t enjoy writing but I do it when I feel like I need to get some information out.

Nobody is coming to save you. You need to stop looking for a hero and put yourself in control of your life. Separate yourself from the failing system because this Nation is sinking ship and can not be saved. Every man for himself is the only way forward from here.

All your dreams are a waste of time while you gain nothing for your survival by thinking all the time and doing nothing. Get into the lifeboat and exit the ship in every way possible because it is taking on water faster now.

WW3 is a failing effort to save the ship. I will not be a player in the banker war that has been delivered to the fools in this nation. I know the truth of who started this war and why. I know who funds it and who feeds the minds of society.

I know our money is fake and our country is bankrupt. Our “leaders” should have been hung when they killed our productivity. I know that our people are brainwashed and have been turned into nothing more than maggots.

I will not fight to save human maggots from self destruction. I will be doing nothing for my fellow Americans. I have no desire to feed maggots or do business with them. I will be as far from them as possible when the ship goes down.

Once you give up all hope about saving the Nation that was and realize that it is gone forever, you will be able to focus on your own life and stop feeding the monster.

Hardscrabble more or less said what I would like to , that after the shitstorm passes there will be a huge opportunity for human expression . Many countries have been to hell and back and survived to offer an exceptional life to their citizens. You can’t have that Golden Renaissance without a dark period.

I have observed that rebellion, action, or what ever you want to call it is more organic than planned. I call it the moment of righteous indignation where a number of people, not a group or organized body just people, all reach the I’ve-had-enough-and-I’m-not-going-to-take-it-any-more point at the same time. It is impossible to know in advance what the trigger is or will be. It just happens. Next thing there are more and more people involved and the entire process is organic. While there may be a rallying point or person, that point or person is not the “leader”. Often there is more than one rallying point/person.
The organic formation and resulting action(s) are usually the most effective. Today, most are still too comfortable to take any action that might result in their personal discomfort but the day is coming soon when it will be impossible to ignore the storm and action will be needed. I have great faith in my ordinary fellow man that when prodded into action, the end will be swift and in favor of us, you and me.
Stay safe and be prepared.

Bless you, Mary Christine, for your encouragement and suggestions. I could’ve topped the corporate ladder if I’d had somebody editing my work emails. I’m as independent as a person can be and reluctant to ask for help but I could’ve made more friends if I’d asked more often.

For independent people, leaders who tell us what, when and how we should be are neither needed nor welcome. Leaders who have shown us how to reach our potential among the hypnotized are enshrined in our personal Pantheon of Heroes.

We arrived in Guadalajara today (first time) after a five-hour bus ride from Sayulita. We’re spent. After last night’s unwashed lettuce, we took turns treating the bathrooms in the back of the bus like a Jackson Pollack canvas. Mountain curves full of potholes slam-danced us against the sides, front and back of the tiny stalls, making bowl-centered deposit impossible; everything sloshed everywhere. I’ll move through the comments one roll of TP at a time.

I like writing and I’ve been working, very slowly, on a book. Writing dialogue is my favorite part and for sure my wife will be editing the female voices.

I really enjoy the articles, essays, by TBP family writers and other independents over the production type. Imo, the production writers just pump out the same tossed salad and its presented as new or revelatory insights for public consumption.

The writers that aren’t counting on trying to stay relevant thru their published craft speak mainly from the heart. That, imo, is where the value lay and it lays much out there for all to see. Be it good or be it evil. Good article, there is always something to pull out and examine more closely, thanks

Leaderless is how the B3RG* like their adversaries, victims and slaves. So much easier to take whatever they want and make thralldom the old and now New Normal. Leaderless are those whose only hope to survive is passivity and prayer. Leaderless provides no coherence to the response which must be unequivical and overwhelming with power. Leaderless and stoked with magical thinking leaves not even a shadow of doubt as to a losing outcome.

Auntie doesn’t want any magical thinking for the coming conflict- leave that for the dumb and stupid, the immature, unprepared and the enemy.

INstead of a cohort of Merlins – emblematic of magical thinking – try instead a armies of hate-filled and avenging spirits with the determination of Spartacus or Boudicca; Qutuz and Baybars versus Mongols; Allemani taking on the Roman Legions in the Teutoburg Forest, Irish Republicans against the British Empire, Afghanis kicking the USSA out…

That leader who can galvanize the Resistance is around somewhere right now and will appear when most needed. No magical thinking just a hard and horrible road of blood, sweat, toil and tears that eventually leads to the palaces of Freedom and Liberty.

I wish I could effectively convey how much more there actually is.

1 Corinthians 15:19 KJB… “If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.”

My little granddaughter is spending the night with my wife and I tonight. It’s our once a week sleepover and it’s truly a joy. We’ll savor it while it lasts as it won’t last forever. Forever last forever; and in forever there is actual physical glory to look forward to!

Philippians 3:20-21 KJB… “For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.”

Eternity, forever, is the essence of it all! This life will be gone soon enough.

Also, she gets to sleep on the floor in our room one night per week (Fridays). I wouldn’t mind her there every night, but most nights she puts herself to bed in her own room and sleeps peacefully until I wake her. A few years and she will have zero desire to sleep on our floor.

I have always been a lone wolf never comfortable in the pack, I have a very small circle of friends and to my friends I can be loyal to a fault. I know I can’t change the world mostly due to a lack of desire to participate in it, that’s my fault. I can do something to make the lives of my friends and family better. Community for me is not a web but a circle. To be in the circle doesn’t require magic, just trust. Woefully, I have no hope for the future of America as a whole but I will lay down my life for anyone of my friends or family. Together we are the Merlin you speak of.

There is real leadership shown here. The officer keeps his men focused and moving forward. Puts the one with rifle out in front , keeping excellent situational awareness. Even the teacher giving police information on arrival , standing potentially exposed to fire showed leadership. Its within each of us.

It’s what I think a Cohort of Merlins would sing about time, karma, learning, following, singing, laughing, and hoping the Lord takes us away from a place without magic…

Dream On

Every time that I look in the mirror
All these lines on my face getting clearer
The past is gone
Oh, it went by like dusk to dawn
Isn’t that the way?

Everybody’s got their dues in life to pay, oh, oh, oh
I know nobody knows
Where it comes and where it goes
I know it’s everybody’s sin
You got to lose to know how to win

Half my life’s in books’ written pages
Storing facts learned from fools and from sages
You view the earth

Oh, sing with me, this mournful dub
Sing with me, sing for a year
Sing for the laughter, and sing for the tear
Sing with me, if it’s just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away

What Are The Akashic Records?

“While many describe or explain the concept in different ways, in essence, the Akashic Records are believed to be the repository of every thought, word, and deed of every living being, good, bad, and awful, in all times; past, present, future*. But those familiar with the records report that there is no judgment or implied penalty in the records — they are said to simply be a record of each soul’s journey through the infinite.
History of the Akashic Records”

“One of the earliest references to the Akashic Records in modern times was made by Helena Blavatsky, founder of the Theosophical movement in the late 19th century. Theosophy is an esoteric belief system that incorporates philosophical tenets from eastern religions while maintaining that “there is no religion higher than Truth.”

“When time is stopped (wait for it) and the barriers between the conscious and subconscious are stripped, humanity will mark the day that the dead rose from the grave.”

Any tool that can be used to build can also destroy. Satan uses tools you can’t counter because you’ve never looked in his tool box.

Have you never suspected that the christian persecutions of those who practiced ‘dark arts’ (metaphysics) occurred because clerics don’t actually know who they’re working for and against?

I started my own existential, metaphysical journey with Thoreau, then his mentor, Emerson, and his contemporary, Whitman. Then on to Blavatsky, Pike, Swami Vishnudevananda, Lobsang Rampa, and many others before some years spent as an acolyte and Arahata of Ekankar. That long learning curve aquatinted me with a lot of inner teachings you won’t find in books because most were burned long ago by people who knew no shame.

If you keep an accurate, nightly dream diary, you’ll want to be whitewashed and deodorized soon enough because you’ll be wallowing judgement-free until you awaken with a desire to not be judged.

“There are as many ways to see a thing as there are people to see it.” Sayings of Uncle YaYa
We all have the ability to think, cogitate, imagine, visualize and create our own personal views of reality; all of us can do this, all eight billion of us terrestrial dwellers. What makes society run somewhat effectively is when: humans band together with a common consensus on how to resolve problems and live together in relative harmony or when a strong personality (often called a charismatic leader or leaders) takes the imitative to persuade others to follow him or her. They can do it by claiming to speak for the CREATOR or that they are the CREAOR in the flesh, they can use force, fear and coercion to get people to do what they want or they can appeal to their peers using reason and emotions to get things done.
Alas today we are so divided, fractured and discombobulated coming together in a common effort for a mutually beneficial cause on the surface seems highly unlikely; this is by design. The psychopathic/megalomaniacal plutocrats who think they are our betters, the miscreants who think they are gods deliberately keep us divided, constantly at each other’s throats, distrustful of each other (while we foolishly trust and rely on them) and induce a constant state of agitation and disharmony that allows them to continue to rule over us! In this state there can be no real we due to the disunity and chaos the plutocrats’ constantly sow.
I am not being pessimistic, I believe we can come together for mutual redemption but first we have to listen to our own hearts, our higher selves and use this guidance to lead/attract us to those with like minds and like hearts willing to sacrifice for the greater good. Ubuntu is real and can be applied especially in todays’ dystopian environment.

We are in a time almost identical to the fall of Western Rome. Where was the best location to be? Just outside the city of Rome, perhaps 50-200 miles, but not at the edge of former empire. The so called Barbarians took over but demanded far less tribute than the Romans had. And the relative levels of organization remained. I suspect as was true in 375 AD, so it will be true in our time. Live just outside the crazy parts and prepare accordingly.

Will the former USA be reconstituted? If enough people who are productive and moral deem it necessary, then yes. But we will not be around to see it. The arc of history is too slow.

Nature and civilizations require periods of die off to allow rebirth.

mm, i’d go back and learn some more history and in a lot more detail there first.
if youre talking about ‘places under long-established roman rule’ and looking for where are your best options to find yourself at the end of the 4th century, as you say ad375, first you must realize that italy remained a core part of the empire for a lot longer – a barbarian interlude in the late 5th-mid 6th century which was rolled back by belisarius , then italy remained under imperial rule until the 8th century- and under the interlude local administration largely continued unchanged, just a different set of bosses pocketed the revenues.
If your definition of ‘good’ place to live was where civilization held on, even in the city of rome you’d have what you wanted for centuries to come – but even more so in the eastern half of the empire which continued strong and stronger for even centuries longer. anywhere else in the western empire , you might find the majority of people around you feeling more relieved by barbarian takeover and groaning in despair when, for example, in the mid-5th century, aetius managed to hold the western empire together past its expire-date. the imperial administration, with its taxes, bureacracy, rules, and impositions, was a heavy burden on everyone outside of the ruling class and was more and more resented by those who bore the burden. One of the reasons the western empire disintegrated and the eastern empire held strong was that the western empire was much more burdensome on those they ruled, than was the eastern, for myriad reasons that dont fit in a comment on a blog post. Some of the broad metareasons involve the different relationship between cost of administration and economic surplus available to support it, where the west had higher costs and lower surplus, and vice versa in the east. Indeed the smarter eastern emperors shed the burden of the west willingly giving up huge territories because they were a losing proposition to keep at that artificially high level of complexity. the barbarian kingdoms were almost all originally founded with a paper thin layer of legitimacy as ruling in the name of the empire, but they were a huge simplification and relocalization. no senatorial class a thousand miles away sucking away the profits of the land, no huge bureacracy wofling down paychecks and bribes, no 400-thousand strong army hundreds of miles distant garrissonning border forts and demanding pay raises constantly.
Meanwhile in the eastern empire mid-5th century the emperor anastasius was able to even _abolish_ the most hated tax (the chrysargyron/collatio lustralis) and still leave a huge surplus in the treasury.

Even when the east reestablished roman rule most of the western regions were still a losing proposition and ended up being a waste of resources in the name of sentimental prestige, and were again lost after they drained the east’s ability to keep subsidizing roman civilization there.

so if you define good living as ‘keeping roman civilization’ then your best move would have been to head east in the 4th century.

but if you define good living as having more freedom, your own property, lower taxes or other similar burdens, and local autonomy, then your best move might have been further west- the eastern empire maintained order and more complex civilization, yes, but it also kept its bureacracy and heavy taxes for another thousand years..

Was there a “leader” during the American Revolution? I say no. There were a lot of people contributing in different ways, ways that suited their talents.

History shows that serious problems arise when there is a “leader”.

So, you ask, who can start it off and co-ordinate it? The answer of course is The People, acting through their freely and fairly chosen representatives… If you don’t have those, that’s the best place to start.

Out revolution was a coalition of people from the colonial governments, with input from all sorts of people outside of government.
Please don’t try to saddle America with another Great Leader. Are you hoping to resurrect FDR?

You’ve been at the tip of TBP spear for a long time and have to have cast iron skin to invite so many inside your thoughts. I don’t read this thread looking for agreement or argument, just different observations and perspectives, shared without concern for which way the thumb-suckers point their pacifiers.

Learning to control one’s inner space requires modulation of the endocrine system, activating the potential in our pineal and pituitary with any number of techniques. Chakra specific mantras, breathing exercises and prayer can open a lot unseen doors and lock others out if need be.

Unfortunately, the compasses we use for inner-spacial navigation are being systematically degraded, calcified through environmental assault on many levels. The survival instincts layered in our solar plexus are being strip-mined with fluoride and pharmaceuticals. Even against those headwinds, one’s imagination can provide sufficient buoyancy to stay afloat while taking torpedos below our water line.

Whatever dark passage awaits us, it will be the beginning of the end for those who would steal our heavenly heritage. I’m grateful they haven’t (yet) heisted our freedom to read your thoughts.

the other powerful, unpredictable and priestly but rooted in the supernatural world [aka the Wizard].
Military, connected with force, the military and war. [warriors]
Productivity, herding, farming and crafts; ruled by the other two [pissants]”

The lemmings need Merlin, but they also need Arthur. How many brave knights know the Way but await their Leader?

I’ve been saying for years here that “we” is the word under which many bodies are buried. I try always to define the scope whenever I use it.
That said, community is vital. People at times do the impossible, become better than they ever could have imagined….but only for others. Only for love.
Our meaning is tied up in fighting for survival in a harsh environment with a tribe. That is how we spent unknowable eons of our evolution on this planet. The great conceit of Civilization is the idea that that need for community can scale. It can, for a time. The American Experiment, so far the best one ever run, was built on the idea of voluntary cooperation and the ability to presume good faith on the part of others.
As HSF pointed out, there will always, eventually, come those that will game this presumption for nefarious ends.
Empires splinter and fall. Period.
But we (the big we…Humans) will find our way through, stumbling and blind and at each other’s throats, and then at some point we’ll start the whole empire building thing all over again.
It is simply the way of thing.
At the individual/small group level it is simply best to try to live well and in whatever peace may be found on the banks of that great river of history.

“stumbling and blind” is an apt description of any student in the material worlds. None of us are accustomed to the blinders fastened upon us at birth and we cherish those who don’t fear shadows.
