In 1968 one of my thee Drill Instructors at Parris Island (a bit of a sadist past the normal DI severe discipline…but only sadistic when he was the only DI around – we dreaded when he had the lone DI night duty) drank three or four drops of my piss in his coffee one morning…while one of the House Mouses watched the DI office door.
I was a frigg’in hero within a tight circle of beaten up Private Shitforbrains!!!

For sure Mark, although I never really had any issues with senior enlisted personnel. It was always the officers I couldn’t stand. With just one exception, they were completely useless and always eating retard sandwiches. That said, most of the division officers never lasted very long, once they were outed as stupid, they were gotten rid of. But, what do you expect when you put someone with a Communications degree in charged of an electrical division.

Speaking for myself I had a love-hate relationship with my personal time in what I came to know as …THE MOTHER GREEN KILLING MACHINE.
Those of us who have been caught in the M.I.C.’s grinding gears…no matter the era of branch and have survived/recovered have a simpatico spirit buddy.
In my case boys filled with military romanticism who actually end up fulfilling their childish dreams…quickly find out the nightmares of the M.I.C.’s machine…be it in water or in mud – jungle or sand find what my Father called;
“THE RUDE AWAKENING”!

Here is a Ying & Yang Officer experience that stays close to my heart:
As a Grunt in Nam I had two company Captains…the first I loved, he was in the last few months of his tour when I got there…he had learned a lot, made Captain under fire…was beloved, was respected, and was super careful with our lives. If he would have told us to charge Hanoi with sticks in our hands we would have done it…but he would never had done that. He would have personally led us through a back door at the front of the assault.
The second Company Commander I learned to hate…and I still despise him. I actually spit when I say his name to myself to this day. He was a second tour Captain who came into the grunts from past HQ posts. He was known as a ‘Ticket Puncher’ who was all in on his ‘combat’ career and the ‘BODY COUNT’ tactic/route to promotion.
I once heard him give an order under fire on the Prick 25 radio (he was many clicks away and completely safe) that made no sense, would have gotten 4 or 5 or 6 or more of us killed quickly and put us into a potential hand to hand combat situation at dusk/night at huge disadvantage for no tactical reason…matter of fact it was PLAIN STUPID…and we all knew it.
Now under him was a Platoon LT. who carefully explained the stupidity (tactfully) of the insane and immediate death order…as we were under heavy fire at the time. An LT who was aggressive when it was smart but who would not waste our lives when it was stupid. An Officer who that day threw away his career…and we all knew it…as nobody died in the open or stupidly followed the ambitious body Count Captain idiot order…but a couple of weeks later the wise LT was transferred out of the infantry and put into supply in disgrace…and replaced by a hard charging idiot who soon got more of us killed…but that LT saved some of us from having our names on the Wall….maybe even me?

I don’t know how you feel about it, but it FUCKING disgusts me that young men are sent to the slaughterhouse for what appears to be, no reason at all. With that, I make way for any man that was part of the “Mother green and her killing machine”.

Ok, one more ‘haughty officer’ Nam experience.
We came in out of the bush filthy, exhausted, and missing more than a few of our buddies. They gave us a few days off to eat something besides C-rats, sleep the sleep of the burnt out grunts we were, and refit before we whirled off to the next pointless body count encounter.
At the Battalion base camp I took a short cut through ‘Officer’s Country’ (Big signs posted) to get to the PX on the other side (of course the Battalion in the rear with the gear and beer officers and their pogues were close to the PX). Along the way I encountered a naked officer taking a shower under a barrel about 25 yards away…who then yelled over at me (an obvious 19 year old tattered bush grunt) in a loud irritated voice:
“Hey Marine this area is for Officers only! What the hell are you doing here”?
I kept fast walking and pretended not to hear him…and this put him into a rage! And he yelled at me again…even louder.
“Marine, I’m talking to you…this is Officers Country you don’t belong here!”
I stopped turned and looked at him…then scanned all around in a quick 360…not a witness in sight…I puffed up my chest and gave the highly agitated middle aged naked officer (probably at least a Major maybe a light bird or even a full colonel from his age) the double hand pumping FINGER BIRDS and took off in a trot laughing out loud.
Ho-Lee- Ho Chi Minh…the angry now raged filled threats from the naked officer were surely going to bring somebody out of their hut…but I guess no one could him over the hums of all their frigg’in air conditioners.
I broke into a dead run and made a clean get away.
But here is the kicker to the experience.
Next to the officer’s private outdoor shower I had seen a clothes line filled with skivvies, green tee shirts, two green towels, and what turned out to be a fancy helmet cover with a design I had never seen before. To my delight it had a mosquito net on the inside you could pull over your face and head and tie around your neck…we had nothing like that…it was GOLDEN!
Later that night I went back and stole every single item. I threw the skivvies in the shitter…grunts don’t wear any skivvies, hells bells, some of us (I did it twice) would slit the ass on our Cammie’s (especially if you had the squirts) to be able to squat and shit on the move…wipe when you had the time.
I’d have given a month’s pay to see that Officers face when he saw his completely stripped clothes line in the morning…and he thought back to my double hand pumping FINGER BIRDS.
(I kept the cool helmet cover hidden in my pack for a month…didn’t let anyone see it until we were transferred to an outpost…just in case – that cover saved me countless mosquito bites…and – I love clean get a ways!)
