Two SEPTA buses crashed into each other Friday when they entered Rhawnhurst neighborhood in northeast Philadelphia, killing an elderly passenger and injuring 13 others, according to CBS News.

The bus crash occurred on Roosevelt Boulevard near Shelmire Avenue after 12 p.m., CBS News reported. Two of the fourteen victims suffered critical injuries, per the outlet. “There was a guy who was holding his head, another guy with blood running down his leg,” Ada Martin, a witness of the crash, said. She was in her car outside of her apartment when the buses collided right in front of her. “This one was like three cars behind it more or less and it didn’t seem like there was an attempt to stop. I’m not sure exactly what happened but the bus hit directly the back of the other bus and that was it.”
People laying on the grass in front of the Roosevelt Apartment homes, which were already evacuated due to an unrelated fire alarm, were shown on Chopper 3 video.
“Somebody yelled, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa’ like they missed their stop or something,” Robert West Jr., a passenger on the number 14 bus, said. He was on his way to a haircut appointment when his bus crashed into the other.
West Jr. said he helped another man escape the mangled bus. He told him to “hurry up” because he heard “some hissing,” fearing that “something might blow up.”
It is unknown what caused the bus collision. An investigation is ongoing, according to Philadelphia Police and SEPTA.

regarding settlements, I recall reading years ago that whenever there was a bus accident in Philly, nearby pedestrians (guess the demographic) would run onto the bus so they could file a claim. In one notable instance, an empty off-duty bus was involved in a fender bender, and dozens of claims were filed with the city

I lacked wheels as a USC student in the 1970s, I tried the Columbia,SC bus system a few times, but quickly decided that i would rather walk 3 miles rain or shine from my little apt. I grew up Southern Baptist. However, riding the bus with negroes made me think that perhaps the Catholics were right. Purgatory does exist.
I too had to take public transit to University for a time. The whole time waiting, riding and walking home from my stop I swore, I will get my degree, get a good job and buy my own car, because I’m never taking f*cking public transit again. This was during the time of the Scarborough rapist and Leslie Mahaffy, Kristen French and Nina De Villiers murders in my area so my parents decided maybe they needed to find a few extra dollars and get me a cheap beater car so I didn’t have to take the bus home late at night anymore.
That cheap beater car also allowed me to get a better part-time job across town that paid $3 an hour more than the job I’d been walking to from my parents house. This was a huge raise in the 1990s and enabled me to graduate from school debt free.
My father and I kept that cheap beater car running for the duration of my studies and I did graduate, get a good job and bought my own car, and many cars since. I will never depend on government transportation because the government is filled with the least capable and least competent among us, and there will never be any rapists, drunks or drug addicts to deal with in my own private automobile.

I remember when the MeToo / Weinstein situation blew up my father took me aside at a family dinner and tentatively asked me if I’d ever had to deal with that sort of thing at work.
