The US is reportedly pushing the G7 to expropriate $300 billion in frozen funds
Russia will retaliate in kind to the potential confiscation of its assets by Western countries, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Friday.
Russian authorities have assessed the unpredictability of the opposing side, as well as their tendency to violate international and other laws, Peskov stated, adding that, for now, confiscation of foreign assets in Russia can only be considered in theoretical terms.
“When they [Western powers] started piling unprecedented economic sanctions on us, they did not think about the boomerang effect at all, but now it is obvious,” Peskov said, adding that a number of sanctions supporters are now wondering whether they did the right thing.
According to the official, Moscow has a list of US, European, and other assets that would be seized if the G7 nations decided to confiscate the $300 billion in frozen reserves belonging to the Russian state.
“Of course, we analyzed possible retaliatory steps in advance. And we will do everything so that they best suit our interests. But in general, no theory can be legal; it can only be pseudo-legal,” Peskov explained.
He emphasized that taking any step of the kind by the West would amount to “theft,” violate international law, and undermine reserve currencies, the global financial system, and the world economy.
“This is fraught with serious consequences,” the Kremlin spokesman warned, adding that it would undermine other countries’ confidence in the US and the EU as economic guarantors.
Earlier this month, the Financial Times reported that Washington had proposed that working groups from the G7 explore ways to confiscate $300 billion in frozen Russian assets on February 24, 2024, the second anniversary of the start of hostilities in Ukraine.

Your point of view is a little simplistic…. Things in the real world are never black and white, they are always varying shades of grey. You have conflict with a party, and still have a vested interest in doing business with them at some level.
Most countries, and businesses for that matter, are rivals, and given the opportunity would take each other out. That does not mean they refuse to do business with each other. It also does not mean they are in a conspiracy together. There are billions, and sometimes trillions of dollars at stake.
To answer your original question, a frozen asset can be unfrozen and returned to the owner at some point in the future. A siezed asset is gone forever.

The big shoe to drop is the Arabs finding a better thing to do with their money than buying and holding US treasuries. They don’t have an adequate alternative yet, but they’re looking for options. The US backing Israel without limit only gives them more incentive.

As many people, including Nobel winning economists, have warned, this is a really stupid move for the US and Europe.
A reserve currency, is a reserve currency because of trust.
For decades, countries worldwide believed they could trust the US not to steal their money, and that the dollar would remain a stable currency. Neither of those things is now necessarily true now.
Why would countries like China, and Saudi Arabia, who have historically been huge purchasers of US Treasuries, now believe the US would not seize their assets in the event they ended up at opposite ends of a political situation?
The current US administration seems hell bent on destroying America, and to make so many poor decisions in such a short period can not be simple incompetence.
This is the situation in a nutshell.
Russia sits on the biggest reserves of natural resources in the world. The west is desperate to get their hands on those resources so they came up with an LSD plan to get them. A LSD plan is one that you would have to either be on LSD to believe would work, or be a total drooling idiot…
What many people do not know, is that not only does Russia have huge reserves of oil and gas, east Ukraine also has huge untapped reserves.
So here were the goals.
1. Install a western controlled government in Kiev, and bring Ukraine into NATO.
2. Develop the Oil and Gas fields in east Ukraine, and use those reserves to supply Europe along with US LNG.
3. Use NATO bases in Ukraine to threaten and destabilize Russia. Overthrow Putin in a CIA coup, and install a puppet leader that would go along with the west’s plan to break up Russia and exploit its natural resources.
As stupid as this plan sounds, the idiot Neo Cons in Washington DC actually believed it would work. They believed it to the point where they actually blew up the Nord Stream Pipeline, because they actually thought they were going to win the war and supply Europe with gas from Ukraine.
So now the west in in panic mode. They are losing the war… badly.. and they realize that Europe is totally screwed without a cheap source of natural gas. Whatever arms they had, to supply Ukraine, which was not much, is now being siphoned off by Israel, with no end to that war in sight either.
The front in Ukraine is collapsing, and the west is powerless to do anything about it. They are threatening direct US / NATO intervention, which does not impress Russia in the slightest. Russia has already easily beaten the best military NATO could build in 8 years. It is also in full possession of those gas and oil fields in Donbas, the west was counting on to supply Europe.
The US and Europe are now hemorrhaging money, they cannot afford, in massive amount’s trying to supply Ukraine, Israel, and maintain stupidly expensive Naval Task forces in the Red Sea and Persian Gulf. The entire world is politically opposing them in the UN, and they are losing the political war, as world opinion turns against them.
I wish I could say I knew how this was all going to end, but I am afraid no one knows that. The people running this shit show are bat shit crazy and incapable of rational thought or reason. All we can do at this point is to watch it all play out like some kind of bad science fiction movie…..
