When “Safety” Isn’t Safe

Guest Post by Eric Peters

When a person has trouble walking on their own, a cane or a walker – even a wheelchair – may be necessary for them to get around. But canes and walkers and wheelchairs are unnecessary for people who don’t have trouble walking on their own – which is why you rarely see people who can walk on their own using them.

“Advanced Driver Assistance Technologies” – as the automotive equivalent of canes, walkers and wheelchairs are styled – are another matter. People who can drive on their own are presented with electronic canes, walkers and wheelchairs ostensibly meant to help them drive. To “assist” them with parking, steering and braking – all of which the “technology” presumes every driver needs “assistance” with.

Italics to emphasize the fact that some drivers don’t.

It used to be most of them – because it was once expected of them. Not in the cultural sense – though that’s certainly true, too. Rather, in the literal/legal sense – in that in order to secure a driver’s license, an applicant was once-upon-a-time required to demonstrate that he could steer and brake and park a car without “assistance.” One of the road tests an applicant had to pass in the Before Time was parallel parking a car, without Park Assistance Technology, often on a hill (if the ride-along evaluator was determined to suss out whether the applicant had the skill to drive and deserved a license confirming this).

All applicants were expected to demonstrate that they could control a car, as by keeping it within its travel lane – without Lane Keep Assistance. That they knew how (and when) to apply the brakes, to slow the car safely without Brake Assistance Technology.

Today, it is mostly a written test

Italicized to emphasize that “drivers” are no longer expected to demonstrate that they can do that in order to get a government ID (which is what a driver’s license has de facto become, in the era of Advanced Driver Assistance Technology).

Now, an interesting thing has a developed as a result of all this “assistance.” It is dependence, arising from deliberately inculcated incompetence. When people are not taught how to drive – how to competently perform even basic maneuvers such as parking a car and keeping a car within its travel lane – they become dependent upon “technology” to “assist” them. Just the same as a person who is capable of walking on his own will eventually become dependent upon a cane or a walker or a wheelchair if he is made to use those things. If – as a toddler – he is forced to rely on such things, he may never learn how to walk on his own, unaided.

But what happens if the cane or walker is suddenly taken away?

If the wheelchair breaks?

That is what happens – essentially – when Advanced Driver Assistance Technology stops working. The person who has become dependent on “assistance” to perform the most basic driving maneuvers is left without the “assistance” he has become dependent upon.

Now what?

This can happen without warning – in the middle of a drive, even. All it takes is some ice (or snow) to blind the cameras that are a critical part of the “assistance” technologies that steer/brake and even park a car for a driver who cannot handle that on his own. The “assistance” goes offline.

What then?

Well, the driver is on his own. The problem is he may not be competent to be on his own, having been rendered dependent on “assistance” technology. This is a problem compounded by adverse conditions such as ice and snow, which require more rather than less skill to safely handle. But the “assistance”-addled driver lacks even basic skills – such as those necessary to parallel park a car in ideal conditions – having never developed them. What will he do when conditions are far from ideal – and he must be able to handle more than parallel parking?

He will probably not be able to handle such conditions.

What then?

More like what’s coming, probably.

When driving conditions aren’t ideal – when it rains or snows – there will be driving lockdowns. It will be argued that not closing down the roads when it rains it snows is a safety risk – because the Advanced Driver Assistance Technologies millions of drivers are being trained to depend upon might not work in the rain or snow.

And this is entirely true.

What’s also true is that it would not matter, if drivers were not trained to be dependent upon Advanced Driver Assistance Technologies, for they would be competent drivers. They would be able to compensate for conditions. They would have developed such skills as feeling traction through the pedals and steering wheel and learned how to modulate throttle and steering inputs to maintain control of the vehicle on slick surfaces.

The problem there, of course, is that such drivers are not dependent – and so are not afraid of dealing with conditions. Because they can. And because they can, they do not need government busybodies to “keep them safe” – and they know it. This in turn causes them to resent being busybodied by government. Capable adults do not like being parented as if they were idiot children – which is not only how government views them, it is how government wants them.

This is what Advanced Driver Assistance Technology is really all about. The purpose isn’t to “assist” people. It is to infantilize people. Government wants capable drivers like government schools want critical thinkers.

The end goal is Total Passivity because it engenders Total Dependence. It leaves the victim unable to think for himself – or to drive for himself. And people who cannot do such things are people who require “assistance.”

And guess who’ll assist them with that . . . ?

I used to think the reason for nanny features on cars was an over-zealous interest in safety. But now it is apparent that these are just a back-door to fully-automated transport pods, in which your usage is restricted according to the whims of the state.

My Uncle has a country place, no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm, before the Motor Law
And on Sundays I elude the eyes, and hop the turbine freight,
To far outside the Wire where my white-haired uncle waits….

I learned my parallel parking in a gigantic Chevrolet Bel-Aire station wagon.
The gadgets in my truck are overwhelming and I never could get myself to trust a backup camera.
I don’t use the navigation system because I’m accustomed to using my smartphone for that.
I like the AC, radio, auto Trans, posi-Trac, and cruise control. Everything else is fluff and a distraction.
Now they’ve enabled our best and brightest retards to allow a machine to guide them down a 70mph highway on a so-called autopilot.
yaaaaay.

I share similar, Joe.
It’s ironic, because all we’ve heard about is to avoid distracted driving.
-Don’t text and drive, etc.
But the trend in new vehicles is to put up a interactive touch TV screen for the controls of everything. Radio, phone, navigation, climate controls, ALL which take much more eye focus to operate while driving, thereby taking driver’s eyes off the road. Be wary of those with handicapper plates!
So, too, states passed legislation to prohibit using a cell phone while driving.
How many people do you know that got a ticket for using their phone while in motion? I know of none.
Then you occasionally see the young women applying make up during morning rush hour, instead of getting out of bed 1/2 hour earlier to start their work day.
Now, people that got jabbed are crossing the yellow line and doing head ons, or blowing lights and T-boning innocents from the clot shot causing their ticker to misfire, stop, or go ballistic trying to push circulation past fibrous worms in their veins and arteries.
Be careful out there.

What is with the people who just stop, in the middle of their driving lane, to talk on the phone or do whatever it is they are doing? I saw this three times in one week last year. Not pulled over onto the shoulder: in the middle of the drive lane (county/state roads). I’m going with the jab and the blood brain barrier.

Every time I wash the mud from my old Tundra with 291k I think what a beauty she is. Reliable is an understatement for her. Just last week had to replace the original alternator.

26 year old Acura. 280k. A little pox on the RR fender, but still looks like a 5 year old car inside and out. You treat her right, she’ll treat you right.

There is an 85er between Austin and San Antonio and even in these parts two lane state highways can be 70-75. I’ve seen a Chevy commercial for a pickup the driver turns loose of the wheel pulling a boat for hands off navigation. I have no clue what the geniuses that design vehicles are thinking.

In Columbia, SC, the DOL made all the license examinees parallel park… on The Pickens Street Hill.

After that, driving a Chrysler Imperial through Manhattan was a snap!

I think there is something like 5 models domestically available with clutches these days, on the low-to-mid end. It’s a sad state of affairs.

To have cruise control on my 2022 Tundra, I have to activate its “radar sensor system”. 90% of my travel is on US 17/21 (70 mph+) & I-26/77 (80mph+). So, no choice.

One good thing is that you can de-activate the engine shutoff when stopped.

I hate cruise control- I’ve had it in all cars since forever and used it about 3 times for only a short period each time. I don’t like not being in full control. New car has semi self driving as long as hands lightly on wheel- so what’s the point of that. Hate that too. I turn off or to minimum all saftey features I can.
If I want to drive I drive.

I get the resistance to CC. It’s the only automation I use on my 97 Acura, because it’s the only automation available! I find it’s the only way to not lose an hour in driving on a long day’s drive… easy to frequently lull yourself down 5-7 mph if you don’t have the assist, especially on hilly trips.

Thousands of years ago, I was part of a push to try to get graduated drivers’ licenses. To wit: IF a person took Driver’s Training classes and PASSED, and then took the basic driver’s test and PASSED, one was rewarded with a BASIC driver’s license that allowed the possessor to operate a motor vehicle/motorcycle on the roadways per the rules of the road of the particular state said BASIC driver’s license was issued from. However, IF a licensed driver wished to improve skills by taking (at their OWN expense) advanced driver’s courses/ motorcycle courses offered by certified driving schools (oh, say like Bob Bondurant’s course, or the SCCA driver’s course, or similar), and PASSED, then said driver could obtain, by PASSING another more stringent State driver’s test a upgraded driver’s license that would allow said upgraded possessor certain “liberties” on the roadway, so long as COMMON SENSE was not missing, such as being able to drive 80 on a highway posted at 65 IF traffic conditions/weather conditions were such that 80 would be considered reasonable.

Things were going well until the retarded peanut farmer appointed Joan Claybrook (the car hating retard that started IIHS, in case you didn’t know WHO has gotten ALL of this USELESS SHIT put into cars and trucks) as Secretary of Transportation. It was all downhill on making better drivers and improving skills from there. The IIHS now dictates what car Manufacturer’s HAVE to put in their cars and Pick-’emups. All that useless shit that you don’t need/and DON’T want unless you have absolutely NO business being behind the steering wheel of a motor vehicle can be laid at her feet. The last time the auto manufacturer’s stood up to the tyranny of duh gubmunt, they were punished. Now, all they do is follow zuh oh-duhs.

Thanks to the IIHS almost NOBODY knows how to drive a manual transmission, heel & toe, trail throttle brake, apex turns, or slow down when it starts raining, among other things one is supposed to know or be paying attention to. Very few can actually read and understand a printed road map. And, the main reason we are burdened with back-up cameras is because “in the name of SAFETY”, the IIHS has made rear visibility nearly impossible without one as the beltlines have been raised far too high to be able to see out of the back of a car, much less a SUV. Even worse, almost ALL of that useless SHIT on cars called “driver assist” IS useless SHIT for all but those with their noses in their cell phones while twerking and jerking on social meejuh. If you are so EFFING lame that you cannot be bothered to check your car or truck’s tire pressure once a week, you have NO business behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. IMHO, of course. The majority of these so-called “driver’s assists” are nothing more than distractions from what is happening just in front of your front bumper.

With people not driving there will be less interest in repairing vehicles. Eventually repairs will be done by machines. Knowledge among the general public will diminish. Multiply this trend manyfold and the result will be a new dark age.

Safety Nation is Feminist Nation. First priority for women is SAFETY. First priority for men is FREEDOM.

Guess who runs your nation? You want your daughters to supplant the sons of the nation for fifty years. Safety Nation is what you reap.
