I saw 2001 A Space Odessy for the first time since 1969 a few weeks ago and was astounded by how on target some of the innovations shown in the movie were.

I remember thinking to myself the first time I saw it, “I’ll live long enough to see this shit happen”.

What a timely warning THAT turned out to be!

You know, when I was 8 I had a near death experience. I won’t bore you with the details here, but suffice it to say I was given a vision of my future life. It stopped at age 60. I always assumed that was because I was going to die at 60. What I NOW realize is that God didn’t show me more than 8 year old me could withstand. The Wisdom of God is ever revealing itself.

2001 was a way better book than movie and the movie was pretty good, especially for it’s time, right up there with the original “Planet of the Apes”, also another great book, along with “Lord of the Flies.
The forward to 2001 really made me want to read it…….

Behind every man now alive stand thirty ghosts, for that is the ratio by which the dead outnumber the living. Since the dawn of time, roughly a hundred billion human beings have walked the planet Earth.

Now this is an interesting number, for by a curious coincidence there are approximately a hundred billion stars in our local universe, the Milky Way. So for every man who has ever lived, in this Universe there shines a star.

But every one of those stars is a sun, often far more brilliant and glorious than the small, nearby star we call the Sun. And many—perhaps most—of those alien suns have planets circling them. So almost certainly there is enough land in the sky to give every member of the human species, back to the first ape-man, his own private, world-sized heaven—or hell.

How many of those potential heavens and hells are now inhabited, and by what manner of creatures, we have no way of guessing; the very nearest is a million times farther away than Mars or Venus, those still remote goals of the next generation. But the barriers of distance are crumbling; one day we shall meet our equals, or our masters, among the stars.

Men have been slow to face this prospect; some still hope that it may never become a reality. Increasing numbers, however, are asking: “Why have such meetings not occurred already, since we ourselves are about to venture into space?”

Why not, indeed? Here is one possible answer to that very reasonable question. But please remember: this is only a work of fiction.

The truth, as always, will be far stranger.

Great post, Jim.

One thing I noticed about Clark’s predictions is that he didn’t factor in Man’s ever growing stupidity and hubris.

The cities will remain because cities are the devil’s favorite playground. So MANY possibilities for buggery and oppression!

Clark spent so much time looking to the future he forgot to examine the past. I’m thinking he wasn’t a particularly spiritual person like, say, C.S. Lewis.

The book starts out in the age of Hominids which is about as far back in the “past” that you can go.
Funny how people that so accurately predicted future trends, some a century ago, were not “spiritual” but obviously way more intelligent than most.

Upon reflection, it doesn’t seem funny at all. It strikes me as quite natural indeed. Think about it…

If there IS an absolute Truth to the Universe, would it not be unavoidable? Undeniable?

Understand that reality is MUCH larger than you imagine. See the possibilities of Brane Theory.

I enjoyed Clarke right up until the time the rumors of why he chose to live in Sri Lanka became to loud to ignore. Now, he’s just the Jimmy Saville of science fiction authors to me.

“We had no case against Clarke and no one had come forward to say they were abused by him,” Mr Wellawatte said.

The agency was established under new child protection laws enacted after the allegations against Clarke surfaced.

“We have not had any formal complaint or testimony from anyone saying they were abused by Sir Arthur,” said NCPA investigator WTD Wijesena. “We cannot go on the basis of rumours.”

The best proof that there’s intelligent life in outer space is the fact that it hasn’t come here … the fact that we have not yet found the slightest evidence for life—much less intelligence—beyond this Earth does not surprise or disappoint me in the least. Our technology must still be laughably primitive; we may well be like jungle savages listening for the throbbing of tom-toms, while the ether around them carries more words per second than they could utter in a lifetime. Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not… Both are equally terrifying.

Great find. He was a sage for sure, tho wasnt the only one who predicted where we are at. But, being a techno nerd of highest caliber, he was wrong on the goodness of it all. He doesn’t mention the loss of meaning, liberty and standard of living from the loss of jobs that his world begets. And the loss of humanity and compassion that comes from lack of normal social interactions, replaced by digital everything. He should have learned from his own creation HAL that putting our lives in the hands of a computer is always going to go bad.

Who down voted this?
How can someone that wrote a book “learn” from something that was a FICTIONALLY created, linear, plot line ?
As if Steinbeck “learned “ something by writing “The Grapes of Wrath”.
The people here sometimes…. I swear to God …. have an absolute inability to think in a rational, logical, manner and what is really sad is that it’s probably not their fault.
So sad that being taught WHAT to think has superseded HOW to think in education now.

Answer to your question : because one has to be able to think abstractly in order to create fictional worlds. CS Lewis himself related in one of his works that as a young boy he honed his creative mind doing just that , creating little fictional worlds from his imagination . Just sayin “Karen ” .Why is everybody trending so dang abrasive going forward ? I know why ,its because we have forgotten the other’s humanity thru the constant and habitual use of this electronic medium as a substitute for authentic human interaction ? AMIRITE ? Or am I just too stupid for words ?lol.

He was my Goto in Science Fiction class because it seemed like his stuff could one day be real, much like The Outer Limits. My teacher showed the movie. Just in my opinion, it was horrible compared to the book. The book terrified me. Most of my classmates couldn’t keep a straight face while watching the movie.
