SUNDAY MORNING CLASSICS ON TBP

A collaboration of: “The Classic Music Mafia”
SMC, nkit, Austrian Peter, and Steve C.

Every Sunday morning we present selections for our TBP family to enjoy.

We present symphonies, ensembles, quartets, octets, etc.

Not all of our music is strictly ‘classical’. We may stray a little, but we strive to make all of our selections ‘classy’.

We offer tips on proper ‘symphony etiquette’ and even some selections that are a bit light-hearted and fun aimed at a younger audience. Those pieces will be so designated, and might be a good way to introduce kids to a world of music that they might not have been exposed to or think of as old and ‘stuffy’.

A full symphony will run as long as it will. We don’t want to cut a symphony short. However, we also include some shorter pieces that we try to keep under fifteen minutes in length. You can sample each and hopefully find one or more that pleases you.

We hope that you enjoy our Sunday selections.

Writing

By Steve Candidus (Steve C.)

“Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on.” – Louis L’Amour

Some of the things that come with years of writing experience are the ability to write well and to write fast.

The essay that I wrote about “The Making of Sunday Morning Classics on TBP” is a good example of writing fast. From the original draft, the changes, and fine-tuning, all-in it took me about half an hour to write.

I don’t always write fast though. Sometimes I take my time and just enjoy writing for its own sake.

My article on saxophones is a good example of that.

I never intended it as an article for TBP. I just got what I call, ‘a wild hare’, and decided to write an essay about them.

I am at an age where I write about whatever the hell I feel like writing about. In effect, I don’t write so much for TBP. I write for myself. I just share some of what I write with everyone on TBP.

The Making of Sunday Morning Classics on TBP

By Steve Candidus (Steve C.)

“A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul.” ― Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

You can trace the origins of this feature to “Sunday Funnies.”

SMC used to post some classical music in the comments of Sunday Funnies. I always looked forward to them as I enjoyed the break from all of the hard rock and punk rock that dominates the comments on this site.

He said that he posted his selections there because there really wasn’t anywhere else to put them and that he thought it would be a good spot for people enjoying a nice quiet Sunday morning.

When I wrote my article about saxophones it only got about 40 or so comments, but the people that did comment seemed to like it and even contributed some music themselves.

HOW MANY SAXES ARE THERE?

By: Steve Candidus (Steve C.)

That’s Saxes, as in saxophones.

Overview:

Invented by Adolphe Sax and patented in 1846 they are classified as a single reed mouthpiece instrument usually made of brass. They fall into the woodwind family of musical instruments and there are more of them than you might think.

The Music of Christmas

By Steve Candidus (Steve C.)

The Christmas season is a time for us all to stop even if just for a few weeks and remember the truly important things in life. A time to step away from the day-to-day worries and frustrations that distract us from what really matters. Friends, family, our spirituality, and our true place in all things on this planet that we share with billions of other souls.

This has been a rough and tumble year for all of us and the true meaning of things often gets lost in all the scurry and strife. So let us not sweat the small stuff for a few weeks and just kick back and enjoy in the spirit of the season regardless of our troubles and our differences.

Since music is here to soothe our souls, I would like to share a few of my own favorite Christmas songs and encourage everyone to post in the comments your favorites to share with our ‘Big Family’ here at TBP.

Thanksgiving QOTD

by Steve Candidus (Steve C.)

I posted this as a QOTD a few years ago, but it’s always fun to watch and might be something different for those new to TBP since then.

In addition to the normal and expected traditions, what other things do you do on Thanksgiving?

I always revisit this wonderful tape Of Johnny Carson and Doc Severinsen talking about Thanksgiving.

And no Thanksgiving would be complete for me without listening to Arlo Guthrie’s masterpiece, “Alice’s Restaurant”

The Democrats Losing/Winning Candidate

By Steve Candidus (Steve C.)

“It is more important to outthink your enemy, than to outfight him.” – Sun Tzu, ‘The Art of War’

One of the things that I’ve learned in over four decades in the world of competitive technical sales is to try and think the way my competitor thinks.

How will they bid on the same project that I am bidding on?

What can I offer that will make me the preferred bid?

How will my competitors react to my winning the job?

How could I still lose it after appearing to be the winning bidder?

What If?

by Steve Candidus (Steve C.)

What if Hillary was set up?

Remember George Bush the elder getting word to Saddam Hussein that it was OK for him to attack Kuwait and then attacking him when he did.

It’s an old tactic, like the good cop/bad cop one, and it usually works.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) feeds information to Hillary that they will support her if she can take the troublesome Tulsi Gabbard out by framing her as a Russian operative.

Living In a Big Family

By Steve Candidus (Steve C.)

“…Only a fool learns from his own mistakes. The wise man learns from the mistakes of others…”Otto von Bismarck (1815 – 1898)

People that grew up in a big family seem to have a different outlook than those that didn’t.

Although my nuclear family consisted of only our parents and four kids, we spent the summers at an old boarding house that was owned by my dad and all of his brothers and sisters (nine in all). There was no heat installed in it so it was just a summer home, but with all of those uncles, aunts, and cousins, it was a zoo.

Not only did it have all of those boarding house rooms, the attic was a huge open space with no finished walls, just the outside boards, and was filled with beds. We kids usually occupied the attic.
