Is a Happy New Year Possible?

Guest Post by Edward Curtin

“The struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man’s heart.  One must imagine Sisyphus happy.”
Albert Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus

Really?  Or was he joking?

Whenever January rolls around and a new year begins with its implied ending, I think of my father and Albert Camus, both born in 1913.  Camus died on January 4, 1960 in a strange car crash, which might have been an assassination according to Italian author Giovanni Catelli, while my father, who almost died in a car crash, was born on January 9.  They did not know each other personally, although they were kindred souls in the way that seeming opposites attract.

HAPPY NEW YEARS TBPers

I’d like to wish everyone a Happy New Year, but lets be serious. 2021 is not going to be better than 2020. In years gone by we’d be in Wildwood and headed to the Shamrock to see Billy Jack. But the Shamrock is closed until March. All the restaurants and bars are closed in PA. I’ll be asleep by 11:00.

Even if 2021 sucks worse than 2020, we still have this place to commiserate. TBP keeps me sane in an insane world. We’ll get through this, and if not, we’ll all see each other at the TBP section of the FEMA camp. I call the top bunk.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM WILDWOOD

We’re headed to the Shamrock in another hour or so to see Billy Jack and celebrate the New Year. I need a drink after writing my new article. I depressed myself. It’s been fairly mild, so we’ve been able to walk on the beach and boardwalk, enjoying the serenity and quiet of a nearly deserted town.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

We’re at our Wildwood condo for the last time. I can’t read on the deck unless I want to die from hypothermia. It’s 19 degrees with a wind chill of 5 degrees. When we make the four block trek to the Shamrock tonight, the windchill will be below zero. I’ll probably look like the picture below by the time we wander home at 2:00 am tonight. I wish all you shit throwing monkeys a healthy and happy new year. I’m sure 2018 will be better than I think it will be. Expect the unexpected. Remember, Fourth Turnings never de-intensify. See ya next year.

Happy New Year (belated)

Happy New Year (2017)!

“Hope everyone has a happy new year in 2017!”

There – the obligatory statement.

While true, we get more mystified by the compartmentalization of our lives. Anniversaries in particular. I guess the only thing that might be right is that the calendar dates (month, day) are the same – and you have a chance for similar weather…

Why is “reflection” over an annual period – more pronounced?

Shouldn’t every day – or even every minute or second be an opportunity to reflect, remember, and improve? Or is it easier just to look back once a year, and start anew?

QUOTES OF THE DAY

“Hope
Smiles from the threshold of the year to come,
Whispering ‘it will be happier’…”

Alfred Tennyson

“For last year’s words belong to last year’s language
And next year’s words await another voice.
And to make an end is to make a beginning.”

T.S. Eliot

“We spend January 1st walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives…not looking for flaws, but for potential.”

Ellen Goodman

HAPPY NEW YEAR

I’d like to wish everyone associated with TBP and their families a Happy New Year. TBP had 7.8 million visitors in 2016. It’s been a crazy year. Our brand of “fake news” seems to be gaining traction. I’ll do my best to try and keep this place interesting in 2017. See you next year.
