Rise Of The Preppers: 50 Of The Best Prepper Websites And Blogs On The Internet

Are you preparing for the collapse of society? If so, the truth is that you are definitely not alone. The number of preppers in the U.S. has absolutely exploded in recent years. It has been estimated that there are now approximately 3 million preppers in the United States, and “Doomsday Preppers” is currently the highest rated show on the National Geographic channel. In fact, you could be living next to a prepper and never even know it. All over America, families are transforming spare rooms into long-term food storage pantries, planting survival gardens, unplugging from the grid, converting their homes over to alternative sources of energy, taking self-defense courses and stocking up on just about everything that you can imagine. The re-election of Barack Obama and other recent events seem to have given the prepper movement even more momentum. For example, in January the U.S. Mint broke all kinds of records and sold nearly half a billion dollars worth of gold and silver coins to the public. Not only that, Americans bought enough guns during the last two months of 2012 alone to supply the entire armies of China and India. When it comes to prepping, nobody can match the passion that Americans put into it.
So what are all of these people prepping for?
Well, the truth is that no two preppers have the exact same motivation. There is a general consensus among preppers that our world is becoming increasingly unstable, but when you sit down and talk with them you find out that there are a whole host of different civilization-killing events that various preppers are concerned about. Some are preparing for the collapse of the economy. Others are extremely concerned about the potential for crippling natural disasters andcatastrophic earth changes. To other preppers, the rise of the “Big Brother” surveillance grid that is being constructed all around us is the greatest danger, and many of them warn of the tyrannical agenda of the New World Order. Terrorism, killer pandemics, EMP attacks, World War III, martial law, solar megastorms, asteroid strikes and societal chaos are some of the other things that many preppers are worried about. There are even some preppers that are not worried about any “threats” at all – they just want to get “back to the land” and want to become less dependent on the system.
Whatever the motivation, it is undeniable that the prepper movement has gotten very large and that it continues to grow.
In fact, there was a recent article in the New York Times about preppers that was actually written by a prepper entitled “The Preppers Next Door“…
To the unprepared, the very word “prepper” is likely to summon images of armed zealots hunkered down in bunkers awaiting the End of Days, but the reality, at least here in New York, is less dramatic. Local Preppers are doctors, doormen, charter school executives, subway conductors, advertising writers and happily married couples from the Bronx. They are no doubt people that you know — your acquaintances and neighbors. People, I’ll admit, like myself.
I was absolutely amazed that one of the key mouthpieces of the establishment, the New York Times, would publish an article that was mostly positive about preppers, because the truth is that prepping is essentially a huge expression of a lack of faith in the establishment. Even the article admitted as much…
PREPPING IS THE BIG SHORT: a bet not just against a city, or a country or a government, but against the whole idea of sustainable civilization. For that reason, it chafes against one of polite society’s last remaining taboos — that the way we live is not simply plagued by certain problems, but is itself insolubly problematic.
And that is exactly right. There are millions of us that are entirely convinced that the world around us is becoming increasingly unstable and that “the system” will not be there to take care of us when everything falls to pieces.
With each passing day, even more Americans lose faith in the system and begin prepping. If you are one of those new preppers, there are actually dozens of great websites out there on the Internet where you can get an education about prepping for free. The list of websites and blogs that I have compiled below contains more articles and resources than you could ever possibly need. Hopefully many of you will find this list to be extremely helpful.
The following are 50 of the best prepper websites and blogs on the Internet…

The sad truth is that our world is becoming increasingly unstable in a whole bunch of different ways and we all need to learn how to prepare for the difficult years ahead.
Unfortunately, most Americans simply are not prepared for much of anything.
For example, a large percentage of Americans do not even have enough savings to get them through a single financial emergency. According to one recent report, approximately 44 percent of all households in the United States are just one unexpected event away from financial disaster.
Most American families do not have much food stored up either. One recent survey discovered that 55 percent of all Americans have less than three days supply of food in their homes.
Could that possibly be accurate? Do people really keep that little food in their homes?
Another survey asked Americans how long they think they could survive if the entire electrical grid went down and there was no more power for an extended period of time. Incredibly, 21 percent of those who responded said that they would survive for less than a week, and an additional 28 percent of those who responded said that they would survive for less than two weeks. Close to 75 percent of those who responded said that they would be dead before the two month mark.
So who are the crazy ones?
Are the people trying to become more independent and self-sufficient crazy, or are the people who have complete and total faith that the system will take care of them no matter what happens actually the crazy ones?
I don’t know about you, but I would prefer for myself and my family to at least have a chance to survive if society melts down for some reason.
What about you?
Are you a prepper?
Do you know some preppers?
Do you believe that people should be prepping?

Chronic Agitator says:
I have been prepping since 1974. It was not called prepping then. I had several Mormon friends and it seem they were being prudent in putting away stores. There have been untold numbers of dire predictions of calamity through the years yet the world is still here. I read here and there of people who just woke up to the possibility that shit happens and it seems imminent to them.
The world could crash today or in 5 years or in 100 years. My advise to new preppers is: as you are able, and be methodical about it, store foods and goods with a long shelf life. Rotate the stores–use some and replace it. If you store wheat or any other grain, learn to grind it and bake with it. Don’t let worries of a collapse consume your life–there is a reasonable level of preparedness that you should maintain. Only you know the level at which you feel comfortable and secure. Become skilled or semiskilled with several trades and outdoor skills.
PS: A message to the ladies or anyone choosing friends to survive with: Consider, if and when SHTF, who do you think you could better survive with–a cityfied accountant/CPA or a redneck hillbilly farmer? Or choose between a lawyer and a doctor. Choose between a hedge fund trader or a dentist. Or…?…choose carefully.

It is true that Mormons know how to prep. Howard Ruff, whom I began to read some years back, was the one who got me thinking along these lines. I thank him for his books, even though he is a racist and a gay hater and an old curmudgeon.
My prep list still has a lot of things on it I haven’t checked off, but I’m working on it.
My prepping really has different layers. I have food, water, guns, grub and medical supplies….but my long term goal is really to divorce myself from the debt based currency culture and live a simple, sustainable lifestyle that doesn’t require massive cash input from an outside job. If I ever get there, that’s what I’ll call retirement.
Nice post. Many of these sites I’ve never visited. Looking forward to checking them out.

I lack both the resources and space to prep much in the way of food etc. The best I have been able to do is to plan a couple of “bail out” options.
One is an abandoned train tunnel that hasn’t been used in well over 60 years. Even being a local it took me a lot of google earth searching to even find it. There are a half dozen mentions of it on the net if you know what to look for, but trust me most don’t.
The ONLY reason that is a bailout option is if there is major radiation issues. Call it codename Detroit.
Codename Chicago is the main plan, its an old farmstead out in the country. Last I heard it was owned by a family actually down by Chicago, however they haven’t been around for years and even the roof is starting to cave in. The barn is likely to be the primary shelter. Freshwater is nearby. Lots of wild game around.
Both code names are wrong, both are known by different names to close family. Should not be too difficult to get to either, even on foot within less then a day or so. As for stocking up, the only thing I have been stocking up on is .22 LR ammo. And yes, .22 LR can take a deer down if you aim right. Subsonic .22 LR ammo is great for hunting small game without giving your position away over more then a short distance.

I have just recently seen a TED talk of Matt Ridley and I feel very comfortable with his explanation of why our society progresses and survives any kind of problems. Our society can possibly melt down, but the fact is that the possibility is just too small so there is no reason to be afraid to live your life depending on the others.
You can always deal with the insecurity by collaborating with more people. I don´t think it is convenient to deal with everything by yourself. People are made to survive in groups (society) and not alone. The best way how to deal with it is to Change the food system and keep the moral and ethical principles that constitutes our humanity.

Well being prepared and actually prepare is different. I want to have the knowledge necessary to be able to deal with basic problems that can arise during blackout or other society-melting problem. On the other hand, I disagree with people who just try to accumulate stuff to be able to survive. My argument is that thoughts about the end of the world are present in human society since its eve. But nothing has actually happened. All the religious cults, preachers, doomsayers etc. just preyed on the society. I believe in collective action, I believe that it is convenient to achieve auto-sustainability. For example by constructing Eartship Green Homes. But definitely not by buying canned food and building concrete shelters in my basement.

I have a question for all of the preppers out there. I am not really a prepper, but I have started prepping more lately. I live in the Chicago suburbs, have always been a firearms owner, and gardened extensively (saving many many seeds). So while not self sufficient, I could get there eventually. What I am curious about is according to the BMI indexes I am overweight, not obese, but clearly overweight. Lately I have been eating better food and dropping some pounds. But I am kicking it around how much do I really want to lose? From a prepping perspective that extra 25 pounds, if not physically limiting, could be some extra resilience during a lean time. I am curious what the true preppers out there think about weight.

I think that if we ever do have a collapse that cuts off our long supply chains and food becomes scarce, that attitude and mental toughness will trump physical fitness. But you can’t afford to to be sick or slow. I don’t think obese people will do well as a general rule under those circumstances.
I’d rather have a producing garden and some stored food than be carrying an extra 30 pounds around my middle, expecting that to sustain me for a couple of weeks. But who knows, really?
Unsettled worker
The best preppers all agree that surviving collapse is a group undertaking. But that does not mean that it makes no sense to lay on a few extra supplies. History clearly shows us that when complex systems collapse, they tend to do so catastrophically and chaotically.

A couple of extra pounds may be a good thing in really bad times.
If you dont have some extra food and water and a weapon to protect your family and yourself.Well i think your kind of dumb. Anyone who lives in a big city and thinks bad times are ahead and doesn’t move out while they can,is dumb.
Smart people try to think ahead and take care of their family the best they can.

I went to St. Louis with the kids this weekend. Road rage everywhere, people visibly pissed off and ready to fight everyplace we went. You could feel the tension. Society is ripe for anarchy. I’m sure as hell glad I don’t live there or any city. It’s ready to blow.
The other obvious thing was the out of control obesity. We went to a museum place for kids, and many of the parents were so fat they couldn’t walk up stairs (could barely walk at all).. They belonged in the hospital, not out in public. If you think they’re preppers, you would be wrong. They are going to die from diabetic ketoacidosis when they can’t get their meds. Or a heart attack or stroke. It’s just mind boggling how huge many of the adults and kids were. Do you think they’re just gonna go “cold turkey” when they can’t get 15 cheeseburgers and a 12 pack of coke a day? Guess again.
Some interesting articles I’ve come across recently. The government is lining up to grab retirement funds. Don’t think they won’t do it.

I have to totally disagree with this. Yes, stored fat is stored energy. However, carrying around that extra weight requires extra calorie expenditures with every movement (up to and including your heart beating). People that are 300+ lbs actually require eating 10,000 cals or so a day just to keep the status quo. And they will really suffer when times get lean.
I’m to the point where I generally eat only once a day. Mabey a 2nd “snack” before bed, but rarely. While if forced to go and hunt/gather to collect food, I would end up burning more calories, at the moment, I survive pretty easy on less then 500 cals a day. Granted I don’t have much reserve, and just spending some time in the cold, I delete it rather quickly (did so the other day just working on my lil bro’s car in -2 to 0 F weather).
I do know that I could definitely stretch a given amount of food a hell of a lot longer then a 300 pounder.

are you people for real . get real when it happen. its easy to keep the basic around . 25 pounds is not much wieght to carry. must be mostly beer. bugging in is ok i like my fire wood . going to mountains is ok but a million people in the mountains at the same time means no fire wood. no fish. no game. so if you come by my camp carrying and extra 25 pounds of fat you will look good over the fire. from human to cannibal in 15 minutes or less. take care and think about it.
