Officer found not guilty in Freddie Gray case
Nero acquitted of four charges related to case that sparked protests
A Baltimore policeman has been found not guilty on all criminal charges in the Freddie Gray case, whose death last year in police custody sparked riots in the city.
Officer Edward Nero was found not guilty on all four charges in the death of Gray, an African-American who was 25 years old at the time of death. Nero, who is white, was the second of six officers to face trial on charges related to Gray’s death.
Gray’s death fueled African-Americans’ distrust toward police officers and triggered violent protests. Of the six officers charged in the case, three are white and three are black. The trial of the first officer ended in a hung jury.
Nero was charged with second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and two counts of misconduct in office.
