SNOW IN WEST PHILLY

I bet you thought I was talking about me being white in West Philly. Nope. We had 6 inches of snow last night. Public and Catholic schools were closed today. I, on the other hand, had the fastest commute to work in over two years. I got here in 42 minutes versus my normal 1 hour plus. There was virtually no one on the roads. This is another example of why were are doomed. We’ve become a bunch of mamby pambys and jackwagons. Did all these people stay home, huddled in a fetus position because a few inches of snow fell on the ground? There was no snow on the roads. The snow stopped at 3:00 am and the snow plows did their jobs, at least until I arrived in the City of Phila.

The good thing about snow in West Philly is that momentarily, the dirt, trash, garbage, dead bodies, rats, and other vermin are blanketed in the relaxing color of white. Snow can make a slum look beautiful.

The beloved mayor of Philadelphia, Michael Nutter, put out a long press release yesterday announcing that the city was fully mobilizing all forces to battle this winter storm. He proudly declared that 450 trucks would hit the streets and save the day. Somebody must have foregotten West Philly. Every road I travelled on until I reached Phila had been completely cleared. From the time I exited the Schuykill at the Zoo, every road I drove on or observed was completely 100% snow covered, 5 hours after the snow had stopped. I swear to God I passed two huge plows PARKED on Chestnut Street (which was snow covered). Both trucks were filled to overflowing with salt.

What Mayor Nutter failed to take into account was that he directs an entire work force made up of union workers.

You can bet your ass that 25% of the union snow removal workers called in sick yesterday. Union workers see sick days as vacation days. Every time they earn one, they use it as soon as possible. This is the union mentality. When these drones called in sick yesterday, the old timers with the most seniority filled in and got paid double time. This is how you end up with garbagemen raking in $200,000 in a year. We all know that union workers are so much more productive than non-union workers.

I pay thousands of dollars per year in wage taxes to Phila and use absolutely none of the City’s services. This money is pissed down a bottomless pit of union wages, benefits and pensions. The one thing that would slightly benefit me would be a cleared street after a snowstorm. I can guarantee you that the streets I use in West Philly will still have snow on them next Monday when I drive into work.

Jim, dear dear Jim, the purpose of sick days isnt because one is sick – its so they can lollygag about the house, play on the internet, drink alcohol and just relax.

The same goes for snow days. Im sorry you wasted your time, albeit less than normal, driving to an empty workplace. =)

We are getting four freaking inches an hour in some places! This is a hell of a storm. Half day for me, time do curl up in front of a fire and read some doom and gloom. Hope the power stays on.

Ms Freud had 4 clients late this afternoon at the hospital. She cancelled and rescheduled all of them.

Jim:
If you want to really see snow removal as it should be come to Minneapolis/ St. Paul. We pay alot of taxes BUT that is one thing that actually works for the most part flawlessly. I don’t care if you’re a tax and spend liberal or a penny pinching conservative, the one thing everyone agrees around here is that come November 1st there had better be plenty trucks, salt, personnel and money allotted for crews for snow removal.

Bye the bye snow does make even nasty ghettos pretty. I never thought of that.

P.S. When are you guys going to bail out our state government? Moonbeam Brown is about to tax our sorry asses even more than he did 30 years ago.

I had to look the word “snow” up in the dictionary. I’d forgotten what it was. Here in Tucson, it’ll be in the low 70s for the next six or more days. But you do need a sweater when you tee off before 10 am.

Then again, Obama is coming to town. Gotta take the good with the bad.

I passed through Mississippi a few days ago amidst a heck of a snowstorm. When I drove through the countryside of Jackson, MS. at night, although I had no ruler or yardstick, I was able to determine that at that time there was EXACTLY 11 1/2 ” on the ground.

Jim you need to move closer to work-that will leave you time for golfing, waterskiing or skiing, or just hanging out with the family instead of just paying for it all.
Check Macleans cover story this month– they say you spend the equivalent of 32 working days a year stuck in traffic. I live in a smaller town 3 minutes from work and all my friends in the city always wondered how i had so much play time- that’s is the 2+ hours a day city people spend in their cars.
Just saying that’s all

Goldie – you ignorant slut, the UK/Ireland do not handle snow nearly as well as the US. I know from experience. How about you? A blizzard or major shuts down the US, but general snowstorm means business as usual. Pull your head out of your ass and wipe the shit off your upper lip before you post again.

I lived in West Phila. for 5 years in the late 80’s while attending Drexel. I was a suburban boy and disliked living there, but……………. when it snowed…………..it was heaven. Well, maybe not heaven, but I loved it, and probably why now live on 60 acres. Your description was exactly how I remember it. Hopefully more snow is in West Philly’s future for you!
