Taxpayers May Be Paying Half A Billion A Year For Fake Obamaphones

Guest Post by Thomas Phippen

Taxpayers may be paying half a billion dollars a year in fraudulent cell phone subsidies, according to a letter sent Wednesday by a senior Federal Communications Commission official.

Ajit Pai, the senior Republican commissioner at the FCC, says there may be as many as 4.2 million duplicate recipients of Lifeline Assistance subsidies, also known as the “Obamaphone” program. (RELATED: Dems Prepare To Ram ‘Obamaphone’ Expansion Through FCC)

In a letter to chief executive of Universal Services Administrative Company (USAC), Pai requests an audit of how carrier sub-contractors vet the applications for new subsidies. In the letter, first published by The Hill, Pai says that cell phone carriers may have bypassed a safeguard designed to prevent fraudulent claims.

The National Lifeline Assistance Database (NLAD) tracks recipients, allowing the USAC to limits payouts to one subsidy per household. The USAC has a exception, however, for families living as “Independent Economic Households” in group homes or homeless shelters.

“Unfortunately, this well-natured exception to the override process appears to be undermining the one-per-household rule,” Pai said.

Analysis of the data from NLAD reveals the “alarming” fact that 4,291,647 accounts, more 34.5 percent of all enrollees in the Lifeline program between October 2014 and April 2015 enrolled through the loophole.

“That’s more people than live in the state of Oregon,” Pai said.

Two years ago, the FCC discovered over 32,000 false accounts were receiving subsidies through carrier Total Call Mobile, signed up under duplicate addresses with fake social security numbers, leading to the creation of the NLAD.

A half a billion for cellphones? Tis nothing. In January our Treasury transferred 1.7 billion to Iran’s Central Bank. The Iranian Guardian Council approved the government budget for 2017 that instructed Iran’s Central Bank to turn that 1.7 billion over to Iran’s military. So now we, the U.S. taxpayer’s get to fund Iran’s military ( as well as Israel’s and Egypt’s). That Obama, he’s all about equal opportunity. I’m sure it will work out just fine. Iran wouldn’t make any weapons to use on the U.S. – I mean I’m sure they probably promised Barry that they wouldn’t.

most of the Obama Phone money goes to Carlos Slim the richest man in the world. How many ways do you want to subsidize Mexico’s economy Fred Reed?

Nkit, that’s the way a managed economy works. We give Iran money (it always starts with us giving someone money, global niggertowns, remember) then Iran buys weapons from russia, who then buys technology from us. There are a bunch of op/eds all over the net right now crying about an “earmark” for Space-X to be written into the budget. Space-X wants to build rocket engines here in the US. Boeing and MDD don’t want to build them, they want to buy engines from Russia, mark them up, and sell them to the government. And according to every article i read, we’re supposed to be mad at Space-X. Checkbook journalism at it’s worst. Think about it.

Notice nowhere in this article does it mention the middlemen, boeing and MDD. http://www.redstate.com/diary/dukefergus/2016/05/12/elon-musk-earmark/

Here’s another one. Still no clarity that Boeing and MDD aren’t going to build anything, just buy russian engines and mark them up. http://www.newsmax.com/t/newsmax/article/732675

starfcker…interesting, and a musky deal also. Bear in mind though that the 1.7 billion to Iran was a condition of Barry’s legacy Iranian Nuclear Deal and ransom for Americans in Iran – the latter being a charge that the White House denies. We know where Barry and Valerie’s hearts are.

If you look long enough and hard enough, and you know exactly what you are looking for, eventually you might hit the exact combination of search words to find out what this is really about, buried deep in the story. http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/08/politics/elon-musk-ash-carter-pentagon/index.html

Now this takes some imagination. What if you had read a series of articles about Musk and government subsidies with a vicious tone. You might look at this new series of articles and if you didn’t do a deep dive, come up with the conclusion that boeing/ MDD just wanted to build some rocket engines for the good old USA, but that bad man Musk just doesn’t want the competition. Just remember that when you read a tesla article. K street doesn’t have a budget, and some things come just so cheap.
