Just Saying No

Guest Post by Eric Peters

Probably I ought not to commit this to print – much less the ‘Net. But I feel obliged.ear tag

Ok, here it is:

I haven’t renewed the cattle tags for some of my vehicles in several years now. I mean “renewing” the annual registration. That is to say, I have stopped paying the annual tributum the state demands of me in order to maintain my “privilege” to operate these vehicles on the roads I have already paid for.

I figure once is enough.

Especially since it’s many times more than once.

Each time I buy gas, I – like you – pay taxes, highly regressive (50 something cents in taxes on a gallon of fuel that costs $2 or so – tax inclusive – amounts to loan sharkery) which is my weekly contribution toward the costs of building/maintaining the roads.

I’ve also – like most of you –  paid the state title and sales taxes as well as personal property taxes in perpetuity – using whatever funds are left to me after paying federal and state income taxes. Plus the might-as-well-be-taxes (because mandatory and enforced at gunpoint, like taxes) extortion payments I have to make to the insurance mafia. Notwithstanding I’ve never filed a claim in almost 30 years of driving, nor had one filed against me.

There is also the once a year “safety” inspection – $15 per and at least an hour of my time shaken down.

I figure it’s enough.vehicle sticker

Especially given the vehicles at issue are not even weekly drivers. Some sit for months before I get time to take them out. And they are all motorcycles, which impart trivial (if any) wear and tear on the roads. If I were tromping around in a Kenworth or even a 3500 dualie, I might feel some moral chagrin about dodging the annual registration fees.

But I don’t…. so I don’t.

The state has become a shake-down artiste – nothing more.

So, I decided to just … stop.

Paying, that is.

Also, wasting my time.

None of my bikes have been “safety” inspected in years. I know they are “safe.” I do not need a make-work state “safety” inspector to tell me so. Much less pay him to tell me so. I am very motivated to make sure my bikes are safe to ride. I am also motivated to avoid gratuitous wastage of my money and my time. And having some guy tell me – for a fee – that my tires are fine, brakes ok and lights all working (things I already know) strikes me as a gratuitous wastage of both.inspector

The cattle tags (registration stickers) are somewhat less gratuitous since they don’t waste my time and there is no dog-and-pony show to get them. But I tire of the transaction. Of being told I must send the state money every year, forever, to “renew” my (so to speak) ear tags, in order to be allowed to roam the feed lot.

It is offensive on a moral level. When did we (how did we) come to accept being herded like this? Literally. Note that the little stickers are color-coded and change each year. Take a drive out to the country and have a look at the Jerseys or the Gurnseys.

Moooooo!

The four-legged cattle, at least, do not have to pay for their tags.

We – the two-legged cattle – are expected to. And it adds up.more tags

I’ve got four bikes. If I am a good milch cow, I am expected to send in about $30 for each ear tag, so $120 every year. It does not sound exorbitant until you compound it. I’ve had these bikes for 20 years. That’s $2,400 pissed down the drain, given over (under duress) for absolutely nothing of value to me – which is (my general rule) the only reason for parting with money voluntarily.

When you add to this the taxes paid with each purchase of gasoline, each purchase of parts (sales taxes), the taxes already paid for the privilege of a scrap of paper issued by the state affirming your ownership (conditional) of the bike as well as the perpetual property taxes paid each year in order to maintain the fiction of ownership… I figure I’ve more than paid my “fair share.”

So I stopped paying.Uncle shake down

It has already saved me a sum equivalent to what I spend on fuel (and fuel taxes) each year and that is a nice offset. But it is more than a purely economic calculation. I have had enough.

Perhaps you have, too.

This kind of thing is a form of passive defiance that – unlike not filing a 1040 – can be done with little in the way of big risk. The very worst that can happen to you is having a Hero (i.e., an armed government worker) notice the cattle tags are past-due and harass you for it. You may be forced to “stand and deliver” (i.e., pay the back fees) but there is no threat of seizing your assets much less dragooning you off to a cage.

And bikes have small plates – and a very small profile. It is (in my experience) very easy to go unnoticed, especially if you stay alert and notice Heroes before they notice you. When I see one, I casually – and legally – maneuver so as to not present my backside (and plate) to his view (or Automated Plate Reader). So far, this has worked well for me.

Psychologically as well as financially.

Feed ’em fish heads.

Everyone has to fight their own fight so I won’t judge but should you be involved in any kind of accident involving injury or death you are going to be found automatically guilty simply for failing to pay “tribute” as you put it. No registration means no legal right to be on the Kings roads.

It would be a good idea to consider what effect this might have on any assets you own as well as your family. How will they fare with you facing a manslaughter charge for failing to pay $30 in tribute while using the King’s roads? You don’t have to like it but maybe there are better hills to die on.

I beg to differ.

Maybe not in cash, but beef cattle pay with shortened lives. At least cattle don’t get hassled with cops, bureaucrats, and lawyers.

We have a small farm; and a scooter and a motorcycle which I ride 1,000 miles per year saving America gas and cause no damage to the roads; I can only ride one at a time yet I have to pay $36.10 each per year for their stickers. Then another $25.10 for a small trailer and $41.10 for a large trailer which I use a couple times each year. My truck sticker is $45.60 and I drive it about 1,000 miles per year. Then there is $1300 property tax which takes a big chunk of a retired persons pension and mostly goes to pay for our counties three public minority schools which get F’s each year. Gerrymandering and government of the Minority (51% Monticello Fl), by the Minority and for the Minority sucks; we will relocate to South East Tennessee (not Chattanooga) ASAP where the Minority is 1% and does not rule, does not over tax, and does not terrorize.

Socialist Empires are expensive. Look you’re getting gas a $2 gal where the world pays $5 gal.

The truth is you really don’t own anything, you just rent it from the State.

Wait till they start taxing you on your breath, a CO2 tax and if you fart it could run into the thousands. Of course, then the only thing that you will be able to buy in the supermarket are cans of beans.

The State has to maximize profits.

As long as you accept responsibility for yourself when things eventually catch up with you and yo face the consequences I’m fine with it.

But most people who are scofflaws of any type -including tax evaders- usually blame the consequences of their actions on anything and everything but themselves.

wrote then gov kaine va to jam it on dec 31st 2009 as i will no longer pay for the honor of working for the state. to begin the new year i was expected to front 3000 fixed cost in the hope business would be forthcoming. kaine over estimated the revenue by 6 billion, leaving the next administration to repair the damage and piss state workers off by expecting some skin in the game. i feel for every small business trying to swim waters surrounded by state officials who seem to enjoy their roles as public servants. to my knowledge this small county has yet to reduce any county employees. a friend and supervisor always responds to my query the county is in good shape, time will tell. reading coolidge, he represents small oil company trying to fight standard oil takeover, will inform readers when i read the verdict. this fight goes back a long time. the same battles over a 100 years ago are still being fought and lost, enter the supreme court.

Where the fuck does this guy live? Some part of Canada where Dudley DoRight rides his horse backwards? Here in Amerikkka, not having current tabs on your car gets you pulled over, and if you move too quickly to get your insurance card out of your glove compartment you get shot. Now that I’m back after taking the dog for a walk in the wilderness, I thought of this……
I believe insurance (including third party liability) is a good thing.
I believe the author was referring to the actual license fee, which of course is a tax grab, when all they do is copy the registration number into the computer. (less than 5 seconds work for $25).
In Canada, the insurance also covers a fee for “roadside alcohol checks” for over $50 to cover the costs of policing. That’s not insurance, and as such, should be tax deductible, if it’s not to cover me personally.

My solution is simple.. I don’t insure my vehicle during the seasons that I don’t use it, and purchase storage insurance instead. That saves me about $600 per year in total costs.

When you finally get caught,It will cost you a lot. I am not saying that Insurance isn’t a scam/bummer. At least in AZ trailers get a one time permanent plate,No yearly paying for tags. I still wonder about folks who think Obamacare.Mandated health Insurance enforced by the IRS. Is a good idea. Support Hillary knowing she will continue with it.

Here in CA, if you fail to pay your tribute the cost keeps building and should you decide someday to sell the vehicle those fees must be paid before ownership can be transferred. And if you drive the vehicle anyway and park it on a public street, it can be towed away by the cops and impounded. You’ll need to scrape up the $ to pay for the tow and outrageous storage fees, plus the fine.
Even if you decide to park it and take a time-out for a year, they still charge you a $20 “non-op” fee. That’s the one that gets me…..paying the government to “not” use the roads!
This is a very sore point for me as I just paid my adult daughter’s registration which she had “forgotten” to pay when it was $118 and had ballooned to $200 before “Dadda” came to her rescue. At least she’ll repay me; I have other adult kids who aren’t so considerate.

God, I am torn. I’m with you Eric! I feel like I have been f….d and not even kissed when I have to pay these extortions. But–you can’t be the only one to stop paying without major bad stuff happening to you! Now if we ALL stopped paying….

To fund the big.gang.guv’s multi-million$ pensions, you do face the probability that it will cost you more time and money to “pay later”. HOWEVER, if you’re serious about doing this, go to http://marcstevens.net/ and listen to a few of his podcasts until you understand – you really get it – that there is NO admissible evidence or qualified witnesses that can prove that “the law” applies to you when they think you’re in the MN. Listen to a couple more – there was one with a good explanation back near Memorial Day. Then a few skype chat role plays … Finally, don’t laugh – a friend avoided a 25 year vacation at club fed with this advice.

Eric,

I hear you but as the others have said the king’s army needs its money. I’m so sick of it all I can’t see straight but I know the day is coming and that day is coming soon.

Ticky Toc’s list of taxes and fee’s per the king’s orders:
Sales tax
Registration
Inspection
Income taxes
Social Security taxes
Medicare taxes
Capital gains taxes
Property taxes
Child support to a woman that hates my guts – I have 50 / 50 custody. She lives in section 8 housing and has no job – yeah she’s in the FSA.
Mandatory insurance or a fine

It takes me working full-time from January 1st until August 1st before I even make a penny for myself. Does that seem right? It sure as hell ain’t right to me.

Hence my poster name here:

In an accident he may find his insurance will not pay as he is operating illegally. Worst case he loses everything he owns.

I would suggest a different form of protest, or sell the bikes.
