Johnnie Walker Black Label. And I think it an insult to mix it with anything other than ice.

Why did you limit this question to those living outside of China? I’d be interested to know if they only break out the special chop sticks when guests are over or something like that.
Funny. Last night our oldest son came in from a sixteen hour drive to spend Christmas with us. Everybody was thrilled, dogs freaking out like puppies, siblings climbing him like a tree, Mom in tears, me grabbing him by his shoulders every time he got within reach.
First thing he did was excuse himself to use the bathroom and when he came back he was delighted that we had put out “the good toilet paper”.
It’s the little things that count.

“Outside of China, what is something that is too good for everyday, that you pull out during the holidays for guests?”
Suzanna- In hard times like these you would not let friends and family loose with the sterling flatware and serving pieces unless you are willing to shake each person down at the door when they leave.
I can never keep the damned things lit long enough to draw well. I have to switch to cigarettes.

Years ago a very good customer of mine who has become a close friend, gave me a few bottles of Italian red wine for Christmas as a thank you. I like red wine and drink it regularly but am not a wine snob. As long as it tastes good I’ll drink it.
Anyways – I popped one of the bottles and had it for Christmas that year and noticed it had a real ‘oaky’ taste to it which is unusual for most of the BC and Aussie wines I generally drink so I decide I’m going to look up the maker and see what region of the country the stuff is from. Turns out it’s worth about $250 CAD a bottle. That’s pretty high brow for a red neck like me so now the last bottle sits on the counter in the kitchen in its own rack. When the relatives come for dinner now I just hide it in the pantry and bring out the $10.00 a bottle stuff.
The old guy who gave it to me is pushing 80 now and just beat stage three lung cancer (yep the old fart is so cantankerous even death doesn’t want anything to do with him). But eventually death will catch up with him and when it does I’ll pull that bottle out early that years Christmas morning and drink the whole thing by myself. I think he’d prefer that because I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t have a whole lot of patience for my inlaws, that’s just how he is. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. So other that the China – that’s it.
I’ve never kept a bottle for any length of time before, I buy it, open it and drink it and have never collected it. It’s not my thing.
How long will it last at room temp? A quick web search says that wine of that type of quality will last decades at cellar temp and a few years at room temp so it is likely time to put it in the cold room assuming he doesn’t kick the bucket anytime soon. Thanks for the heads up.
Back when I was in banking my clients just loved me because, in their words, I was the only one who knew anything or got anything done. I got enough chocolate for a village, champagne, all kinds of things. One wealth management client gave me a box of six chocolates, from Pierre somebody, dusted in 24 carat gold. This was the same guy who went into a bar downtown for his birthday and ordered a shot of their most expensive scotch, not realizing it would cost $180.
The hand tooled Benelli 12ga and my fathers handmade (by him) .54 cal Hawken muzzleloader rifle to go make some noise. Sadly he won’t be able to shoot with us due to infirmity but he’ll be able to hear his “smokepole”, as he calls it, roar!
Looks something like the second and third one down but with some intricate carving on the stock and he handmade every metal component except the lock spring, barrel and breach. He named it the “Eclipse” to commemorate the 1979 total eclipse of the sun over Great Falls, MT which occurred while he was making it.

I think Mike meant china as in dishes on which you serve the food. I could be wrong. 🙂

That’s true Bea. AND all the flatware must be accounted for before the trash goes out…one of Mom’s house rules.
Merry HoHoHo to everyone!

FM- Won’t that wine turn to vinegar if you leave it at room temperature for that long? Be a shame to waste a $250 bottle of wine.
I dunno Bea,
