Actually, Ukraine had the Crimea before the Soviet Union existed. When the Communist revolution took over Russia and eventually formed the Soviet Union, Ukraine was included in the group. Khruschev was born in a village near the Russian – Ukrainian border, and rose to power under Stalin, eventually serving as governor of the Ukraine before becoming Premier after Stalin died. Khruschev gave the Crimea back to the Ukraine while he was Premier.
Now, under Stalin and most of the Premiers, it was recognized that border provinces might owe less allegiance to Moscow than Russians might; so a policy of re-settling Russians into the border provinces was pursued. The reason East Ukraine has a high Russian population is due to that resettlement policy; it was to ensure that the industrialized, developed East would be loyal to and responsive to Russia rather than provincial Ukrainian rulers. Granted, the shenanigans that Vicky Ruland and Co. created led to the current situation, but there’s little reason to think that Russia would have invaded to restore obedience if they had not provoked it.

I dunno. Methinks you are placing to much faith in the idea that proxies can be controlled.
I look at it this way. If Russia attacked a NATO country (they won’t … this is just an example) that would be a guarantee of USA involvement. I don’t know how close Russia and Iran are … but, I think it’s pretty close …. and what if Iran’s nuke facilities are taken out and a shitload of Russian technicians are killed. It seems to me Russia wouldn’t have much choice but to strike back at us.
That’s just one scenario. I’ll bet there are literally dozens of scenarios where these proxy wars can turn into full blown direct confrontation between superpowers.
The admirals and Generals can’t even beat Syria. Even with the help of Turkey, Israel, Saudi and Gulf States. They cant win that war with Iran. And in Iraq speaking of proxy wars USA is fighting one for the Shiites and Iran.
