“Though New York City has one of the most segregated schools systems in the country,” writes Elizabeth Harris of The New York Times, until now, Mayor Bill de Blasio “was all but silent on the issue.”
He was “reluctant even to use the word ‘segregation.’”
Now the notion that the liberal mayor belongs in the same basket as Southern governors in the ’50s and ’60s like Orval Faubus of Arkansas and Ross Barnett of Mississippi seems a bit of a stretch.
For what Harris means by “segregation” is that in the city’s eight most prestigious schools, like Stuyvesant High School and the Bronx School of Science, where admission is by written test, the makeup of the student body does not remotely resemble the racial diversity of the city.
“Black and Hispanic students make up nearly 70 percent of the city’s public school students,” writes Harris, “but they received just 10 percent of offers for seats at specialized schools this fall.”
“About 27 percent of the offers went to white students who make up 15 percent of the student system; 52 percent went to Asian students, who up make 16 percent.”
Harris later adjusted her numbers. Asians are 62 percent of students. At Stuyvesant, only 10 of 900 students being admitted this fall are black.

At Stuyvesant, The Wall Street Journal writes, “2.8 percent of students are Latino and 0.69 percent are black. But 72.9 percent are Asian-American.”
Harris decries this as “extreme school segregation.”
De Blasio now demands change: “We must be sure that the very best high schools are open to … every kind of New Yorker.” The student bodies at the elite public schools “need to look like New York City.”
Translation: We must have more Hispanic and black students, and if that means throwing out the entrance exam to cut the numbers of Asians and whites, throw out the exam.
Soo Kim, president of the Stuyvesant alumni association, is having none of it: “Correct me if I’m wrong, but they’re saying these schools are too Asian, so there must be something wrong. … Am I the only one who looks at that and says, ‘I don’t understand how that’s even legal.’”
Councilman Peter Koo took it straight to the mayor:
“The test is the most unbiased way to get into a school. … It doesn’t require a resume. It doesn’t even require connections. The mayor’s son just graduated from Brooklyn Tech and got into Yale. Now he wants to stop this and build a barrier to Asian-Americans — especially our children.”
“I’m not sure if the mayor is a racist,” says Kenneth Chiu, chairman of the New York City Asian-American Democratic Club, “but this policy is certainly discriminatory.”
As Asians demonstrated this week against changing admissions standards to reduce the number of Asian students, schools chancellor Richard Carranza gave them the back of his hand: “I just don’t buy into the narrative that any one ethnic group owns admissions to these schools.”
Yet it is Carranza and De Blasio who are claiming an entitlement to seats at the schools based on race. The Asian protesters are insisting on maintaining merit and performance, measured by tests, as the standard of admission.
This issue is not confined to New York. It has gone national and pits Asian-Americans who believe in and benefit from a meritocracy in education against egalitarians who embrace race quotas and affirmative action to bring about a greater equality of rewards.
That Asians are the new victims of race discrimination seems undeniable. In August, the Times reported:
“A Princeton study found that students who identify as Asian need to score 140 points higher on the SAT than whites to have the same chance of admission to private colleges, a difference some have called ‘the Asian tax.’
“A lawsuit cites Harvard’s Asian-American enrollment at 18 percent in 2013, and notes very similar numbers ranging from 14 to 18 percent at other Ivy League colleges, like Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Princeton and Yale.”
Now, compare the numbers from California:
“In the same year (2013), Asian-Americans made up 34.8 percent of the student body at the University of California, Los Angeles, 32.4 percent at Berkeley and 42.5 percent at Caltech.”
Among possible reasons for the racial disparities: In 1996, by voter referendum, Californians outlawed racial preferences.
What the Ivy League is doing may be criminal in the Golden State.
In 1965, in words written by Richard Goodwin who died last month, and delivered at Howard University, LBJ declared:
“This is the next and the more profound stage of the battle for civil rights. We seek not just … equality as a right and a theory but equality as a fact and equality as a result.”
In today’s clash in liberalism’s citadel over which races have too many seats at Brooklyn Tech and Stuyvesant, and which races have too few, we get a glimpse of America’s future.
It appears to be a future of endless collisions and conflicts over who deserves and who gets what — based upon ethnicity and race.

What amazes me is that despite hearing this from democrats, and despite the fact that things like ‘the Asian tax’ on things like SAT scores and other affirmative action type things that benefits blacks and hispanics at the expense of whites and Asians, Asians still support democrats at a rate of 70%, at least nationally.
But, this is the natural result of the past few decades of education policy. For many years, the goal of public education has been to get equal outcomes out of every race. Billions spent trying to improve the test scores of blacks, but to no avail. If anything, its gotten worse. So, since elevating blacks to the same level of whites and Asians has been a complete failure, the goal is now to teach to the lowest common denominator, as in make everyone equally dumb. In order for this to work, though, there can’t be and ‘safe’ schools with only smart children, free from the interuptions, misbehavior, and violence thats always present with a lot of blacks in a school.

How about getting all the schools in better shape and thus giving ALL students a better education.How about getting a move on towards more parent involvement in their kids education/how about perhaps giving older students say a few credits to help younger students with tutoring and such/how about more trades in part of the education equation for students who have a desire to learn a trade(does not mean you can’t also go to college if you choose).These ideas would not cost more monies,just better budgeting and reallocation,and getting rid of wasteful salaries ect.,start with these ethnic bean counters!
To the students who commit crimes ect. in these schools,they are out.I would try and have some last chance program for them but believe efforts better spent reaching kids from troubled homes ect. ahead of them committing crime and showing them a way to better their lives.

How about “freedom of association”. Allow people to associate with those that they feel most comfortable with, segregation will reassert itself very quickly, across all strata economic, social, and yes racial. It’s human nature.
Blacks can be celebrated for being superior athletes, but Asians cannot be celebrated for being superior scholars.

One of my kids graduated this past December in three and one half years in the Honors Program, Summa Cum Laude. There were several white kids in the Honors ceremony. Several Blacks, and a whole shitpot full of Indians and Orientals. This group was smart and exceptionally hard working. The leftist/SJW narrative (which many Asians have bought into) is that all nonwhites constitute a “people of color monolith” while ignoring the vast divergences between ethnic groups and diversity within them (black Americans vs. Caribbean immigrants, Puerto Ricans vs. U.S.-born children of middle-class Hispanics, east Asians vs. Vietnamese, Laotians, etc).
Earlierthis week, a black woman in the NYC subway was filmed verbally harassing and nearly assaulting an Asian woman as the former thought the latter took her child’s seat space. The black woman was loud, profane, crass, and said (literally), “this ain’t your country.”
If the black woman had been white, this would have been all over major news networks. But because the perpetrator was a “person of color” being mean to another “person of color,” a few local websites ran it and that was it.
Compare that to Aaron Schlossberg, a rich Jewish lawyer who was videotaped blasting Latino employees at a deli for not speaking English. It went viral; the company which held the lease to his law practice in Manhattan evicted him. Crowds of Latinos, blacks, and Asians demonstrated in front of his office.
Why the disparity in the difference? If all racism against all people of color is to be condemned, why did the black woman quietly go her way and has not yet even been identified, whereas Schlossberg (who is proven to be a despicable person based on past conduct) has been doxed and pursued?
If anything, on certain occasions, blacks for example have been notorious in their hostility towards Asians. Some of them terrorize Chinese takeout joints located in questionable areas, and others have looted Korean-owned businesses (and in the late 1980s, in NYC, boycotted them). Blacks have at times physically attacked/assaulted Asians as the former perceived the latter to be weak and unwilling to fight back. Many blacks detest Asians because white conservatives (and whites in the far/alt-right) point to Asian success in academics, professions, and commerce as a response to the claim by the left that people of color are held back by racist white people. Asians quietly arrived, worked very hard, saved money, and (to varying extents) gradually assimilated into the mainstream culture – not that they all watch the SuperBowl, celebrate Thanksgiving or Halloween or Easter, and love March Madness, but rather, that they realized America was a country whose success came largely from a Protestant work ethic (even if many Asians could not distinguish Catholics from Protestants) and they figured that living with a very disciplined and sober work ethic would be pivotal for them to succeed as well.
I cannot deny that 2018 America, with the SJW ideology and “grievance industry,” has way too many black people who are convinced they’ve been oppressed and are owned some kind of “reparation” (not necessarily for slavery).
In my experience, white-collar Asian-Americans with degrees from quality institutions and great careers publicly ignore these leftists and privately look down on them, even if they foolishly vote Democrat. And they generally live far away from areas with many nonwhites and non-Asians if their finances allow them. The reasons are clear: they want the best schools and the areas w/ the lowest crime rates (all the more if among them are those whose parents were victimized at some point during their immigration experience).

You have the Christian Asians, Hmong/Laotians – highly conservative.
You have the overseas Kuomintang Chinese – conservative but less so. Their Communist counterparts aren’t liberal by any stretch of the imagination.

If the employer needs fewer than 100 new employees, it could very easily turn out that he will hire no blacks at all, even if he uses no racism whatsoever in selecting his hirelings. In fact, of the occasions in which this scenario plays out, and exactly 100 new workers are hired, the employer will have hired…
100 whites and 0 blacks on 84.5% of occasions
99 whites and 1 black on 14.2% of occasions
98 whites and 2 blacks on 1.2% of occasions
97− whites and 3+ blacks on 0.1% of occasions
Because the United States is a First World country in which most of the best jobs are mentally challenging jobs, purely free-market hiring practices will exclude a demographically disproportionately high fraction of low-average-IQ races from those jobs. This is normal and natural. It is the only way by which a country can remain competitive internationally, especially with countries that don’t engage in politically correct tampering with the free market for labor. A focus on merit is a good thing. It is in conflict with diversity and inclusion. Therefore, diversity and inclusion are bad ideas, and to focus on them, instead of on merit, is harmful.
