Cooper is one of my all time favorites, his To Ride Shoot Strait and Speak the Truth, is required reading in our family.
I never experimented with his preferred scout style scope mount, but have always wanted to. The current rage of 1×6 optics that dominate competition have remained on top of the action, rather than forward of, and I have often wondered if longer eye relief would improve handling.
The Colonel was a great man.
You have to have a scope designed for the extended relief. I believe part of the reason for the forward optic was that such low magnification scopes are smaller and didn’t interfere with handling the weapon while sneaking and peeking. It is also easier to reload in a hurry with a bolt gun without an optic over the action. I wonder if he would do anything differently today with many bolt guns modified to use magazines?
I am fairly certain he would have liked some of the new stuff like the EOTech VUDU.
His handgun technique taught me a heck of a lot and when fully absorbed makes you the very last guy anybody should want to start a gunfight with.
Even the ones wearing those damn sun glasses.I read an article about that which claimed police officers and federal types wear sun glasses to conceal their facial expressions and fear .They would be the first ones I would go after in a war. Of course I go after them at about 400 yards or more.
Also I have a 308 gun scout rifle .Nice lite gun. Could carry it all day .One in chamber and 10 in magazine.
Just watched “Rules of Engagement” for the first time about a week ago. Profoundly disturbing.
I could be mistaken but doesn’t the extended eye relief help to line the crosshairs with both eyes open while squeezing?
Hmm…with a magazine fed bolt action rifle loading the weapon with a scope mounted on top of the bolt area wouldn’t be a problem . My new 308 is magazine fed…even if I needed to remove a cartridge etc it’s no big deal .
