Everyone knew Madoff was doing something illegal to achieve the returns he was claiming year after year, but he was given a pass by all the usual govt watchdogs because he was a tribe member. The only reason he went to jail, unlike say Corzine who also stole billions of dollars from his customers and amazingly is still walking free, is that most of Madoff’s customers were also tribe members.
