NH Ranked Most Patriotic State In America

A new survey found New Hampshire residents are the most civically engaged in the country.

New Hampshire had one of the highest voting rates in the 2016 presidential election.

What is it that New Hampshire has that New Jersey doesn’t? Both Northeast states are among the 13 British colonies that declared their independence in 1776 and formed the United States of America. But one is far more patriotic than the other, according to a new analysis ranking the patriotism of the 50 U.S. states. New Hampshire and New Jersey topped and closed the list, respectively.

The personal finance website WalletHub used two key metrics — military engagement, with a weight of 25 points, and civic engagement, with a weight of 75 points — to determine the most patriotic states.

In the category of military engagement, WalletHub looked at things like the number of military enlistees from 2012-2017; active-duty military personnel and the share of adults in the military reserves.

The more broad category of civic engagement measured things like the number of adults voting in the 2016 presidential primary and general elections; the number of volunteers and the hours of service they contribute; the number of AmeriCorps and Peace Corps volunteers; trial and grand jury participation; participation in groups and organizations; and civics education requirements in public schools.

New Hampshire ranked among the top five states in terms of citizens who voted in the 2016 presidential election.

Here are the 10 most patriotic states in America, according to the analysis:

1. New Hampshire
2. Wyoming
3. Vermont
4. Utah
5. Idaho
6. Wisconsin
7. Alaska
8. South Carolina
9. Missouri
10. Minnesota

The analysts said 10 least patriotic states are:

50. New Jersey
49. New York
48. California
47. West Virginia
46. Texas
45. Connecticut
44. Indiana
43. New Mexico
42. Michigan
41. Illinois

Although his state ranked in the bottom tier for patriotism, Sean Michael Laurent, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Illinois, said most Americans view themselves as patriots and “there is no single state or group of states that is ‘most’ patriotic.” The definition of patriotism is complex and its meaning may well depend on the political ideology of the person who is being asked to define the term, he said.

“Probably, most citizens of the U.S. would call themselves patriots,” Laurent said in comments accompanying the WalletHub analysis. “However, given the current political climate, many people would also accuse people from the ‘other’ side of the ideological spectrum of failing in their patriotism … because standing up for and defending your country can mean different things to different people.”

The analysis found that traditionally Republican states are more patriotic than those that are Democratic strongholds.

“Perhaps the best way to be a patriot is by supporting your leaders when you agree, dissenting when you do not, but above all, trying to keep an open mind and make your country the best place it can be with your every action,” Laurent said.

David Konstan, a Brown University professor emeritus of classics and comparative literature, said the mantra “my country right or wrong” isn’t patriotism, but servility. To him, patriotism is inspiring “one’s country to live up to the highest ideals of humanity.”

States with a civics education requirement got extra points in the ranking, but Konstan said officials need to proceed cautiously.

“When I was young, we learned what was called ‘civics’ in school, beginning with elementary school,” he said. “It was biased in its way, no doubt about it (the United States was just emerging from the second World War), but we did learn about the Constitution, the way the government works, and what was expected from and due to a citizen.”

“Any such course must have a critical perspective: we don’t want to inculcate mindless obedience to the status quo. What’s more, the world is changing, and what seems right to some may not seem so to others. The issues are delicate, I recognize, but they need to be faced honestly and critically. I trust a citizen body that thinks for itself.”

Changes in cultural traditions may lead some to believe younger citizens aren’t as patriotic as their parents and grandparents, but that’s not necessarily a correct impression, said Timothy Kneeland, a professor and chairman of the History and Political Science Department at Nazareth College.

“Yes, the younger generation may be less likely to adopt the cultural practices of the past, singing the national anthem, saying the Pledge of Allegiance, etc.,” he said. “They have been raised to think that being too American means being too parochial and they may be embarrassed by an overenthusiastic embrace of things that are labeled America. However, they still show their love of country by community service, civic engagement, etc.”

The analysts pulled data from the Census Bureau, Department of Veterans Affairs, Defense Manpower Data Center, Corporation for National & Community Service, Peace Corps, Military OneSource, United States Election Project, Administrative Office of U.S. Courts and the Center for American Progress.

Was this post today purely coincidental?

It was great meeting you and Avalon yesterday along with a beautiful cross-section of TBPers. It was also a wonderful surprise to meet so many lurkers. I really hope that you developed a sense of camaraderie that you join in the commentaries.

Thanks HF for such a fantastic time!!! And the food – WOW!!!

There truly is a special spirit of patriotism here in New Hampshire, but there is more to it than that. There is a strong sense of community, but also a great deal of self sufficiency. If you look at the articles list of the 10 most patriotic states, you might notice that these 10 also have the lowest numbers of people looking for handouts and gimme dats.

I hope you all have safe travels home, and I hope that we can do this again next year.

You mean all those Massachusetts residents who voted in New Hampshire in 2016 helped New Hampshire be considered the most patriotic state? That’s hilarious!

No. In spite of the Massholes that infest the great state of New Hampshire, we are the “Live Free or Die” state in many, many ways.

There is a strong independent streak in VT. It’s being suffocated slowly, but it’s still there.

Wow, the states with the largest Hispanic population are considered the least patriotic. I could guess the most patriotic also have the largest White population. Get ready for an influx of Negroes.

I hate to be a fly in the ointment, but patriotism is grossly overrated, especially the shallow, flag waving variety.

Thanks a solid NH education and quasi-homeschooling back in the 1980s, I had a solid grasp of what the ZOG, the “corporation”, and gun barrel diplomacy was, just as I was entering my teens.

At 16, I joined the NH National Guard and hoisted an M16A2 and commenced Field Artillery training. Yes, they let “kids” do that with parents permission back in 1988.

3 years later, I joined the full time Army and flew to Germany a month before Saddam invaded.

The point is, even at that young impressionable age, I did not for one minute fool myself with PATRIOTIC notions, as if I was somehow “standing up for democracy” or “showing my pride in America”. I knew the military was a standing army and nothing good would come from that in the long run.

I joined for my own selfish reasons, like getting paid to fire big guns and chase foreign girls overseas.

Sure, there were some patriotic clowns in my combat unit, but most of them figured out what a corrupt mess the military is quick enough to take the shine off their “-ism” which is patriotism.

It’s just peachy that NH has sky high “civic engagement” and voter turnout in local elections, but high turnout in federal elections is DEFINITE SIGN of too many PATRIOTIC DUMBASSES who believe the FEDCOAT system still works.

What a crock of shit! “Civic engagement” has absolutely nothing to do with patriotism. “Civic engagement” usually means a bunch of church ladies and “Progressive” Marxist busybodies trying to shove crap down normal people’s throats. Vermont elects a Communist creep lie Berie Sanders and they are “patriotic”? Minnesota is home to countless religious nincompoops who moved heaven and earth to stuff their state full of Somalis. Now that is patriotism for you! Any Southern state is ten times more patriotic than either of these two nests of liberal vermin.
