Red Rope and Coyote’s Day Late Twofer Tuesday: Doom with a Side of Gloom

Did Y2K actually happen in slow motion? Have we been collapsing since then?

I wonder if the actual concerns about the end have indeed stepped up since 2000. Was that the year of the hanging chads? When the SCOTUS determined the US election?

Are we now overly concerned with the coming collapse, fixated on when instead of trying to make it stop collapsing? We seem to be negotiating a way to survive a catastrophic future instead of demanding the politicians halt the catastrophe, which is of theirs and bankers making, without doubt.

Famine, war and disease are not Malthus and Ricardo’s tired formula: They are the only recipe for complete and total annihilation; it is written. I think Faulkner thought very highly of himself:

In April 1947 William Faulkner was invited to visit the University of Mississippi. While conducting a question-and-answer session in a creative writing class, Faulkner was asked to name “the five most important contemporary writers.”

When asked to rank himself among his contemporaries, Faulkner responded:

1. Thomas Wolfe: he had much courage and wrote as if he didn’t have long to live;
2. William Faulkner;
3. Dos Passos;
4. Ernest Hemingway: he has no courage, has never crawled out on a limb. He has never been known to use a word that might cause the reader to check with a dictionary to see if it is properly used;
5. John Steinbeck: at one time I had great hopes for him—now I don’t know.

The image of Cassandra crawling onto a limb declaring contagion and chaos upon the land is vivid and I can imagine here sitting there swinging her legs as she proclaims to passersby when and how they will procure the virus unless they lock themselves away, isolated and imprisoned.

Were the original concerns of our country’s founding really based on God’s principles? We know the Puritans had devout beliefs and strict, even puritanical, guidelines for social behavior. But, was that actually proof that their concerns were salvation and not just preservation of their own control? We know that the various colonies were formed as different religious sects claimed new regions to practice their beliefs and organize their communities in ways that sustained and promoted their beliefs. But, at what point did those communal practices become regulatory in nature? How can any society regulate how people think about each other?

Words are sounds. When a tree crashes in the forest, can we sue it for offending our ears when we stand nearby? Or should we have moved when we saw it was falling? Let those who have ears hear what they must hear and simply turn away from the things they don’t want to hear.

We all have “something.” Perhaps, there are ancestors in your line who were slaves, so you will take umbrage when slavery is mentioned and dismissed as inconsequential to your current station in life. We have friends who were raped, perhaps we know some poor child molested by family members or in an abusive situation that seems hopeless. We have friends and family who’ve died of drug overdose and suicide and we’ve seen that that does to the survivors of those deaths. And, in the end, it all boils down to one person’s point of view and whether that viewpoint can expand to accept that it is severely limited and, like Faulkner, be willing to at least suggest one person might know more than they.

There are several categories of Doom and Gloom, but War, Famine and Disease are a common theme, aren’t they? There is also one called Deception, but I’m not sure where it fits into the picture.

We live in a free will plane of existence where we can choose between the paths of light versus darkness or selfishness versus compassion. Our journey here is to clean up our darker side and reconnect to the light and the Source. This is what the cycle of reincarnation is about. While it remains a choice, note that in the language of the Christian Bible, there may be a limit to the number of “do overs” that we get if we persist in choosing the path of self centeredness, self indulcence, self aggrandizement, power and wealth at the expense of others, etc.
