Here are some thoughts, feel free to yell at me.
What is weird to me about the Corona Virus is that it has been covered and reacted to in a way I have never seen before.
We can quibble about infection rates and how deadly it is, but a few things are not debatable.
This article for example.
The premise is that a patient has recovered after getting HIV treatment. GREAT.
But at this point I would assume that tens of thousands have recovered, because somewhere between 97% and 99% RECOVER.
Why is this being treated as a miracle, the article doesn’t list the patients condition when he was admitted or hint that he was brought back from the brink.
The article seems tailor made to aid in the panic.
The Virus originated in China, and millions were quarantined, which was unheard of and shocking.
Manufacturing shut down, media blackouts, etc.
We had no choice to assume that something truly awful was going on.
But the virus is out now, we can see its effects around the world without the thumb of the Chinese government on it.
I am not panicked by what I am seeing, but yet I am seeing a panicked RESPONSE.
Global markets are fluctuating, supply lines are broken, etc
But it all feels surreal, because the underlying reason doesn’t compute.
People are recovering unaided, most of the overwhelming of the system is due to panic, not inability to treat the sick.
I have no idea if the Corona Virus is “the big one” or not, but what I will tell you is that the effect does not match the cause.
Something is off about everything that is happening.
I think that we should all take the proper precautions, it wouldn’t make sense to do otherwise
BUT.
If I were going to engineer a scenario in which the Chinese government was going to attack the United States financially, stall our economy, create havoc in society, and hurt Trump’s reelection chances in the fall…
I could not come up with a better plan than this.

You can find dandelion root coffee online if you want to try that as well. I think it’s freeze dried so it’s like an instant coffee.
Taste wasn’t strong at all to me. At least now I don’t need to be concerned about depleting my kidneys of potassium. Causes my legs to twitch at night.
I love when the dandelions come up in the spring. I dig them up, food saver them, and freeze them. They go in every bone broth I brew, and I have a cup each morning year round. HSF’s bones too. And don’t forget the chicken feet. Also, turmeric root up the you know what.
It’s great stuff ILovCO2. In fact, it has Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Zinc and potassium. Probably would NOT be a bad idea to drink the tea at least once a day to fight off viruses. Hint, hint. It’s also anti-viral.

Fleabaggs said his diuretics weren’t doing enough for him. I recommended dandelion root tea because it’s a natural diuretic that gives back nutrients rather than making you pee them out. Since it doesn’t wash out your potassium and actually gives you more potassium, he says it helps to keep his legs from twitching when trying to sleep.
Leg cramps and twitching at night are usually from a lack of potassium and/or magnesium or a low intake of B vitamins.
I agree. Listening to how bad it’s supposed to be I keep waiting for it to really explode…nothing, nothing, nothing. Yes there are cases and hot spots. Yes there are fatalities, primarily in individuals compromised by pre-existing conditions. The MSM and more so the Alternative Internet Media keep whipping up the Panic in the people. i do find it interesting that the strain in italy is infecting so many people who are taking it back to where they live–people who go on european ski vacations will typically have more $ & be more productive members of society than the average person–

Yeah, that is a tad….gross. I’ve quit writing and commenting on the articles that discuss how it is/isn’t bad because I realize one cannot fight normalcy bias or cognitive dissonance. So I go on my merry little way and hence forth shall simply pass along prepper tips.
Prepper tip:
Save the dryer lint and egg cartons. Put some dryer lint in each egg carton compartment and smear vaseline on the lint. You now have an egg carton full of greasy dryer lint that you can use to start a fire…or not….
Ten minutes after the Titanic hit the Ice burg, if you had tried to warn anyone that the ship was going to sink and that the majority of those on board were about to die you would have been ridicules and told to go away and stop being crazy.

Go to any major city ER and do a head count. It’s doubtful too many ‘pussies’ are clogging up the system just yet, however, the system is already clogged with the aforementioned freeloaders.
BTW: I didn’t personally control deliveries and shipping and so on, I’m truly not that powerful, contrary to popular belief, however, the ‘just a hoax’ virus in China is. I said early on, like weeks ago, that what we are seeing now would be happening because of the ‘it’s just the flu’ virus and I was trashed for doing so.
Keep on believing the virus is a nothing burger, that I, personally, am at fault for the cascade of misery which will progressively get worse because I warned about the secondary and tertiary effects that we are now seeing made manifest.

I’d agree, but not necessarily about the virus. We are at the threshold of a lot of systemic challenges, of which this is just one.

I went to the grocery store tonight to stock up on some more things, like more meat, fish, seafood and dairy, some frozen veggies, since nobody seems to the stripping the stores in my area. (You can never have too much.) Saw one lady with a laden cart but nobody else. Was she preparing or just feeding a large family?

Birch bark is a good fire starter but it has hundreds of uses.
But is it as good as dryer lint?
Birch bark is better because it has natural oils in the bark that helps it ignite, whether a live birch or when the tree is dead and dry.
Plus, you should use candle wax for your fire starters instead of Vaseline because it’s not as messy to carry around. Vaseline on a cotton ball will start a fire but having a solid ball of lint and wax in a cardboard egg carton that you’ve made at home is better. Just make sure you have a piece of lint sticking out of the wax as a wick for actually starting it. It will burn much longer with wax, especially if using bee’s wax.
Birch doesn’t grow as far south as I live, so we harvest chunks of pine with the resin in it (called fatwood). Works great, especially if you shred it. It’s even sold online for this purpose. And in the Deep South, we have plenty of pine trees for harvesting.
Whether you live north or south, trees are your friends. Get to know them better.
Got lots of prickly pear and yucca down here, not too many birch (none) and the local trees aren’t real greasy or oily. The bark is hard to pull off an oak or hackberry tree. This is Texas, where I live there aren’t even many cedar trees much less pine. Yucca string makes a sort of fire starter, yucca root makes a shampoo and the flowers are edible, ditto the stem and the string can be used to mend shoes or mocassins.
Vaseline has many uses, if your skin is dry you can rub the vaseline coated lint balls on that parched skin, your horse have a saddle gall? Vaseline to the rescue….ball joints on the pick up rusty and stiff?
All good uses. I would eat the prickly pear and the yucca flowers, and continue to use the yucca for a natural soap. Anything left over from the yucca can be dried, shredded, and used for starting fires.
Oak and Hackberry don’t have a useful bark for actually starting the fire. The logs can definitely be burnt as firewood, but you really have to feather it to get a fire going with it, and that’s only after you get an initial flame started. Once the fire is already built up, you just throw these logs on and they’ll burn.
Are there tumbleweed near you? That would be a good choice for a firestarter. What about dry grass or cattail heads? Anything dry that can be shredded and that will take a spark will work. You’ll probably have to experiment with different things. But you can always buy fatwood online or make char cloth, which takes a spark easily (tutorial on YouTube).
You may not be into this sort of thing, but I would suggest watching any bushcrafters on YouTube that are in the Texas area. You’ll definitely find what works and what doesn’t in your area. And the more you know, the better off you are.

Rub a little grease, even bacon grease or vasaline on both ends of some Q-tips and put them in a container. they will keep a flame under damp tinder long enough to get a fire going. I check my pockets every morning for my case folder and my cricket lighter and 4 Q-tips in tinfoil. Doing it for 50+ years.
Mygirl, no offense intended, but I don’t use Vaseline on my skin because it’s a petroleum product that’s not healthy for you. I suggest you research the ill effects of it.

Now they’re sending the coronavirus-filled “Grand Princess” cruise ship, which was docked off the cost of California, to Marietta, Georgia (where I was born and where my dad was stationed while in the Air Force ) . The passengers will be quarantined at Dobbins Air Force Base. This is right on the outskirts of Atlanta. I guess that’s where we’ll see the next outbreak.

Just read another article that says they’re docking in San Fran and many of the patients will be taken “safely” to Marietta. So flying them in I suppose. Will they burn the plane afterwards or wipe it down with alcohol wipes and put it right back into service? An article by another skeptic on what’s going on with this virus. He hints this was an accidental release from the bio-weapons lab at Ft. Detrick and was carried to Taiwan and Wuhan, China, by Americans. He’s also asking why the U.S. isn’t testing or making the tests since China is selling reliable tests worldwide.

The spread was not stopped in time for quarantine to make any sense. The last quarantine I recall was for (correct me if I'm wrong) about 4-5 people with ebola. If you can nab <10 people and nip it in the bud, then fine; but this SARS-CoV-2 cat is out of the bag.
3% mostly already at-risk. One could offer places of voluntary quarantine to that 3% (that can mostly already be identified) to prevent them from ever becoming infected and let the virus work itself out in the rest of the population naturally, OR Quarantine the 100% (with whom? with what?).
Say a neighborhood of 100 is quarantined because of 1 symptomatic infection. Unbeknowst to anyone, one other is already infected but asymptomatic. The asymptomatic — WITHIN quarantine — infects 1 other person 13 days later and then gets sick on day 14. The newly infected person does exacltly the same and infects one other on day 13 and gets sick on day 14. And so on. How long does the quarantine have to remain in effect before all are clear? Can you ever tell?
Point is, without a quick, easy, and accurate test for this infection, quarantine does nothing to stop the infection because it's already OUT, but if done on a broad enough scale, quarantine can absolutely guarantee the TOTAL economic collapse of the U.S.
The adminstration has dropped the ball big time on this one. SKorea has areas set up where people can drive up to the kiosks and get a rapid test INSIDE their car, no leaving the car and possibly spreading the virus. Here, in the good ol’ US of A, there aren’t enough tests much less rapid response tests, there aren’t enough masks or medical supplies and it will only get worse because most of the medical stuff came from China.
What do we pay these people for?
How many studies, conclaves, conferences, reports, and ‘hypothetical scenarios’ have they wasted our time and money for over the decades? Then, when the real thing pops up, they’re like deer in the headlights; and government talks about quarantine, shutting things down, or restricting movement without a clear idea of how to tell the infected from the uninfected, how successful these actions are likely to be, or how long they’re going to last.
The benefit of a quarantine at this point is to slow down the spread so that hospitals are not overwhelmed or at least not overwhelmed as fast. I saw an article or video somewhere where the guy said it was a three way balance. Quarantine, hospital space, keep the economy running. Quarantine to slow down the spread so that hospitals don’t run out of room but don’t quarantine so much that the economy tanks. If you quarantine too few then too many people get sick too fast, hospitals are overwhelmed, deaths go up, people panic, and the economy tanks. If you quarantine too many then nobody is left to run things and the economy tanks. Or something like that. I don’t even remember if it was something I read or watched. Getting old sucks.

Assume the worst early, App. The well was tapped dry. It isn’t but surely the Chinese knew we were printing the money to pay them. They had to know we can’t afford the retiring boomers. They must know Europe is on the ropes. You can only slice the pie so many times before you run out of pie.
I look at this like the story about a dude who didn’t get accepted at medical school. He whacked his smoking hot girlfriend while she slept to avoid the inevitable ugly scene they would have.
That is my scenario for this situation. Rather than face the angry public over the missing $trillions and a crashing economy, they provoked this outbreak. I said earlier that is isn’t taking advantage of the opportunity the crisis offers but rather taking advantage of an opportunity to create a crisis. We might say Rahm Emmanuel’s dictum is now – Never let a good opportunity for a crisis go to waste.
Then, when paid looters with guns show up to your door to collect your emergency stash, the government will say, see, you didn’t let us take the guns…another manufactured crisis.

Why do people have such a hard time understanding this is not a run of the mill flu virus? This is a bio-engineered weaponized virus created in a lab. The Chinese did not commit financial suicide by quarantining their whole country for nothing. They know exactly what this virus was designed to do, and it scares them shitless.
It also amuses me that the recovery statistics being used to downplay the seriousness of this virus are the propaganda statistics coming out of China. The real problem with the internet, is that it gives a public voice to ignorant people who spread their ignorance to others, like a virus……
nCOV isn’t the Black Plague, but it can definitely be very bad.
The issue is hospital beds. If you’re under 60, your chance of dying from nCOV is really low…unless you’re one of the 20% who gets severe respiratory problems and can’t get a respirator/hospital bed.
In comparison, normal flu is 500x lower in terms of hospitalizations.
So let’s do some math:
typical flu infection rate: 15% – but this is for flu which some people already recently contracted and so are immune (flu immunity is very short term).
nCOV infection rate: ? – 15% without any measures for sure, could be 30% or more.
But let’s just say 15% for arguments sake. 20% of those are going to need a hospital bed = 3% of the population.
What’s the number of hospital beds in the US per 1,000 population? About 3 = 0.3%
What happens if you don’t get a respirator/hospital bed and you’re one of the 20%? Well, the mortality rate goes way up. That’s Wuhan vs. South Korea (3-5 vs. 0.5).
The 20% number is higher if you’re older, but still exists for younger people. You’re just less likely to die.
This isn’t cause for panic, but it is cause for serious concern.
