Washington State Loses “Hundreds Of Millions” To Nigerian Unemployment Claims Fraud Scheme
Just when you thought the world has reached a level of peak absurdity, the Nigerian scheme makes a grand reappearance.
Washington state officials admitted losing “hundreds of millions of dollars” to an international fraud scheme, originating out of Nigeria, that robbed the state’s unemployment insurance system and could mean even longer delays for thousands of jobless workers still waiting for legitimate benefits.
As the Seattle Times reported, Suzi LeVine, commissioner of the state Employment Security Department (ESD), disclosed the staggering losses during a news conference Thursday afternoon. LeVine declined to specify how much money was stolen during the scam, which she said appears to be orchestrated out of Nigeria but she conceded that the amount was “orders of magnitude above” the $1.6 million that ESD reported losing to fraudsters in April.
While LeVine said state and law enforcement officials were working to recover as much of the stolen money as possible, she declined to say how much had been returned so far. She also said the ESD had taken “a number of steps” to prevent new fraudulent claims from being filed or paid but would not specify the steps to avoid alerting criminals.
Thursday’s disclosure helped explain the unusual surge in the number of new jobless claims filed last week in Washington, which as we showed this morning was the state with the highest weekly increase in claims.
On Wednesday, the state’s monthly employment report for April showed Washington with a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 15.4%, up from 5.1% in March. The national unemployment rate for April stood at 14.7%, seasonally adjusted.
For the week ending May 16, the ESD received 138,733 initial claims for unemployment insurance, a 26.8% increase over the prior week and one of the biggest weekly surges since the coronavirus crisis began. That sharp increase came as the number of initial jobless claims nationwide fell 9.2%, to 2.4 million, according to data released earlier in the day by the Labor Department.
Indeed, the surge in claims made Washington the state with the highest percentage of its civilian labor force filing unemployment claims – at 30.8%, according to an analysis by the Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan Washington, D.C., think tank. Nevada, the next-highest state, reported claims from 24.5% of its civilian workforce.
It now appears that many of those claims were fictitious and emanated from some computer in Nigeria.
The disclosure came as the state was already struggling to process an unprecedented wave of legitimate jobless claims amid one of the worst economic crises in U.S. history. Some additional delays in benefits payments to legitimate claimants are likely as the ESD subjects all claims to more scrutiny.
“This makes me the most angry, and the most upset — that we need to delay payments to Washingtonians who need the benefits,” LeVine said adding that “we need to also build in more time for analysis. So going forward, we want to set expectations that we will add an additional one to two days to our processing time.”
That delay follows a decision last Thursday to temporarily suspend benefit payments for two days. The delay came after the ESD disclosed that it had seen a surge in bogus claims reportedly filed by identity thieves who appeared to be targeting the extra-generous benefits available under federal pandemic relief legislation.
That same day, the Secret Service issued an alert describing Washington as the top target so far of a Nigerian fraud ring “exploiting the COVID-19 crisis to commit large-scale fraud against state unemployment insurance programs.”
It remains unclear how the fraudulent benefit payments made their way all the way to Nigeria.

try going to a local news outlet (or some equivalent) and publishing. show all the ballots you’re receiving, show how easy it would be to commit fraud, show your local citizens (however many are left), your local election board, and representative, what is going on.

here in hillsborough county(tampa) we have relatively clean elections but it doesn’t take but a few votes per precinct to flip legislative seats at any level that have a relatively low # of voters–

I got one too. Same exact thing. There is a box on the front of the envelope that says if the person is deceased, check the box and drop it in the mail. It also had DECD after her name. I guess they don’t have anyone who knows how to tell the computer not to print the DECD checks. Weird.
A couple of years after my mother died I received a certified letter addressed to “the estate of X, deceased” demanding to know why she had stopped filing her income taxes and threatening her for failure to comply with IRS demands.

There’s a reason they chose WA state—no proof of identity other than a social security number (avail on the dark web) and that’s it. And they promote using online applications and provide assistance in all languages (not just English). They do send letters to employers confirming John Doe was employed and now separated, but they only give you 3 days to respond. You call and you can’t get ahold of them because they are overwhelmed with claims. There is so much wrong with their pandering to foreigner illegals, and getting them money FAST, that I’m surprised Nigeria isn’t a 1st world country by now.

I have worked in that state for all but 6 years of my 32 in the work force. I have never once taken unemployment but have paid into it the entire time. The governor proclaimed on March 17 that we could not work until at least May 18, and I lost my job. I’ve been waiting 8 weeks for unemployment and haven’t heard a peep from them yet they send 10s of millions of dollars to Nigeria? Bullshit, they sent it to themselves as kickbacks. Fuck you WA state!
I am retired so in a sense, I am unemployed. How do I apply in Washington and get checks…..if supposed ‘Nigerians’ can do it to the tune of millions, why can’t I for a few thousand a month?

I think it’s because the masks affect them directly and it’s something they can actively reject. they can’t reject the overspending, the job losses, or the rotting food, and none of that affects them directly anyway – but the masks do touch them directly, and they can personally reject the masks, so they focus on that.
Yes, there are deaths that are being deliberately miscategorized as COVID-19, but not as many as some people think. Looking at the same CDC chart, look at columns two and three (Deaths from all causes and Percent of expected deaths). The Percent of expected deaths compares the Deaths from all causes to an average of the Deaths from all causes from the last 3 years. They include it to show the completeness of the data because the deaths on this chart are the officially reported deaths which can take weeks or months to be reported. But what I find interesting is that the weeks of the COVID deaths are already much higher than the previous years giving an indication of excess deaths for those weeks. Back a week or so I did some calculations to get a snapshot of excess deaths compared to those classified as COVID-19. Those classified as COVID-19 were less than 20% higher than the number of excess deaths so that indicates to me that less than 20% of the deaths were miscategorized. 20% is still a lot, but the attitude that I’ve seen is that the MAJORITY of deaths were miscategorized, which is not the case.

Calm down a little, Annie. First, read all the footnotes on that cdc site. Then, take into account that estimates frm neutral parties estimate that 13% to 30% of CV deaths are actually from other causes. Then go bac to last year and see how many flu deaths the CDC said there were….80,000, USA. CV does not rate existing response. Check also Hong Kong flu circa ’57,’68.
Maybe you should read ALL the footnotes on the CDC site instead of just the ones that you want to. Yes somewhere around 20% of the deaths listed as COVID-19 on Table 1 on that page are from other causes. THAT MEANS AROUND 80% ARE FROM COVID-19, or around 60,000 officially reported deaths. That 80,000 deaths from “flu related illnesses”? Look up what the CDC mean by “flu related illnesses”. They included ALL of the pneumonia deaths from ANY cause as “flu related”. Look at the number of actual flu deaths (Column 6) and it is an order of magnitude lower than pneumonia + flu (Column 4 + column 6) which is where they get the 80,000 from, so instead of 80,000 you’ve got about 8,000 flu deaths per year. SO THIS IS MUCH WORSE THAN THE FLU ALREADY AND IT’S NOT OVER YET.
