I exchanged emails with family in California the other day. I, of course, avoid all mention of politics, and kept my comments on such things to a single statement – that this virus stuff sure sucks.
The response I got from one relo (relative to you that do not speak ‘Strain) was that he sure is happy that that “clown” Trump is going down, and now there is real leadership on the way that will stop the virus in its tracks, and he hopes that they act like Australian leaders did and wipe out the virus. (I have drafted a long reply to that absurdity, detailing the draconian measures taken, the increased suicides, the hundreds of thousands seeking help for mental illness, the closed borders, the 40,000 Australians stranded overseas contrary to international law, the inability of citizens to leave Australia, the deaths caused to cancer and other ill patients unable to source care, etc. I advised him be careful what you wish for. I have not sent it at this time, as what is the point.)
Anyway, back to the correspondence. After bashingTrump, and effectively begging to be locked down, he says, and oh, by the way, me, my wife, and my extended family have all moved to Texas.
They moved to Texas, he says, because California is such a sh**hole, taxes are too high, property is too expensive, opportunities too limited for the kids and grandkids. It is so much nicer in Texas, he said.
So, there it is. People have no understanding that what they have done and what they believe have caused the issues they are facing. They are moving because of the issues they caused, but they are not changing their behaviour, and will repeat the mistakes elsewhere. This particular member of my family is a really nice guy. But he simply cannot link cause and effect.
Texas is only modestly Republican/conservative at the moment. By the next election, if there is one, it may be a majority left population. Incoming Californians, Oregonians, Washingtonians, plus a natural left base of Hispanics, mean it is a matter of time before Texas falls to the left.
Tennessee is also now in play. They are seeing a huge influx of northerners. It is only a matter of time before Tennessee falls left.
So, there will be no political way out of this mess. It will soon be, if not already is, impossible to elect a right/conservative leaning federal government. The government will either be left, or more left – Socialist, or Communist. Any hope of ever getting out of this quagmire will have to happen at the grassroots levels of middle America.

RiNS, I think it was not that you could not come back at all but if you went past a certain date you would have to quarantine in some facility that .gov put you in for at least 2 weeks, then test negative before you could get out. However, I can’t remember where this info came from.

I exterminated 3 of those garbage can raiding bastards last summer with a .22 caliber Mendoza pellet rifle. I never got the sow, but Big Daddy and their 2 babies got it. Since last May I’ve killed 112 blackbirds, 4 pigeons, and about a dozen bird feeder occupying squirrels. There’s a damn sparrow hawk that’s about to get it, too, any day now.

My problem is few birds will come to my feeder due to the constant raids by the sparrow hawk. I don’t want to eliminate the hawk, for it needs to eat, too. Anyone got any solutions to scaring it off?
By feeding the birds you are contributing to a population of birds that are dependent on your feed. The result is an increase in their population and more competition for natural resources amongst the population. When/if you stop feeding them your dependent flock can/will perish.

I used to fill that big feeder twice a day. Now it’s down to once every 2 days, meaning my visitors have dropped by 3/4ths. Now people suggest suggest I stop the feeding, all over one creature causing all of the trouble. It’s a pretty stark fact, isn’t it?

Coalclinker, a friend of mine has a koi pond and some of the fish he has had for 15 or 20 years. He has a wonderful creek behind his house that ties directly into the Caloosahatchee river, full of all kinds of things, including a big softshell turtle that he and his family fed almost everyday for at least that amount of time. He welcomed the arrival of otters in the creek, a friend of his who works as a biologist at the Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve told him it was proof that the ecosystem was “healing”. His world just had a big dose of “healing”. First they found the big turtle destroyed. I told him I was the otters, he refused to believe that. His cat disappeared. I told him it was the otters, he refused to believe that. Then he found the otter in his koi pond, and it had already killed every single fish, evidently just for the fun of it. I wish I knew how to post pictures, I’ve got a great shot of that otter on the tailgate of my truck. It won’t be killing anything else at his house. He wouldn’t believe me, that the thing is just a giant weasel, and just as bloodthirsty as any other kind of weasel. PBS would have you believe that they are just fun and playful animals. He learned the hard way.
I think this weekend it’s going to be stool sitting time by my open kitchen window.

And I’m interested in big predators, we went looking for panthers and bears on Sunday. My X’s dad lived in Florida in his final years. Had a bear tearing up his property. He complained to animal control. They shrugged their shoulders so he killed it. The authorities came and removed all his firearms.
I don’t know how that ended legally because he passed in ’14.

Do you guys think there is any possibility that cell phones might be being used to somehow hypnotize/ control people? I know, it sounds right up there crazy with lizard people, but people really do seem to be even more irrational now than they ever were in the past. The use of the word triggered in modern context is interesting, because hypnotic programming uses trigger words to induce involuntary reactions in the brain. DARPA was messing around quite a lot with mind control, plus the MKUltra experiments, it would not surprise me at all to find that they had uncovered a covert and effective way to short circuit or manipulate people’s responses and brain function. Purely anecdotal, but the people I know who are most cell phone obsessed are also the most Covid obsessed and the most rabidly Biden/progressive. The things are also definitely addictive; I can’t really think of any other kind of technology that is comparable in that regard, except perhaps TV, which also have a lot of mind control roots attached to it (it isn’t called programming for nothing).

Same here, Hubby has a flip phone for work (refuses to get a spying smart phone and put his foot down when work wanted him to have one). I have no cell phone and never have, also don’t watch TV at all, and he hardly watches any either.
I carry a flip phone for emergencies but it is rarely turned on. I turn it on if I am away from town and need to speak with my wife or vice versa.
I like flip phones and refuse to have a smart one. Getting harder to get one and have a phone service like Verizon carry it.
There’s something in my nature, my very being, that hates group think and groups in general. Glee clubs and organizations of any kind are anathema to me. I especially dislike women dominated social groups, I’m not a girly girl and I don’t relate to the topics that seem to intrigue most women. I’m much more comfortable in the company of men.

The usual response is to look back at me like I have three heads, so I continue, “It would be hard to design a better tracking and control system. And the irony? Other than microwaving our brains, I doubt that there is much direct mind control going on, because it isn’t needed to control people. Most hardcore cell users stay on FaceBook, Twitter, and maybe a few news propaganda services for many hours a day. They get their dopamine hits, along with some fear programming, confusion, mental fragmentation, passivization and wasted time.
The technocracy entities don’t even have to agree on how to do all this mind destruction. It’s built into their business models. They don’t have to consider moral implications. Sort of a drug dealer mentality. Eventually the product zombifies the customer though.

Many of my friends don’t understand my phone “habits.” I hear comments like” you are so hard to get a hold of”– because I mostly don’t have my phone on my physical person. When at work it stays in my desk or bag with my laptop–when at home it is dropped on the dresser with the wallet and keys when I get out of my work clothes.
If someone calls, like the old days it may be a few hours before I check the device and call back. This infuriates people but is how the phone world worked until the past 20 years and 99% of calls aren’t that urgent.
Never had a facebook or twitting acct.. just seems to be a low-brow, time waster ( I don’t care what you ate, watched on TV, your opinion on the sports ball game, how bad traffic was, or some cloying meme about Live/Love/Laugh or the meaning of true happiness)..
I read, I garden, I build things, I work.. I do like forensic shows, and some History channel and/or Discovery channel shows but otherwise TV is 1000+ channels of crap. I try and watch an occasional movie but rarely get through a half hour before The Agenda starts.. you know what I mean, the white girl and strong black guy couple, the evil white man is always the protagonist, the noble gay guy, the lesbian kissing, and of course- the 100 lb lady who beats up an entire battalion worth of evil, fascist/racist white dudes.

LLPOH– I have been saying for several years on this site that Trump ( four or eight years) was only delaying a demographic certainty. red states turn purple then blue, amnesty for 20 million additional blue voters is coming, conservative older people will die off– it is INEVITABLE. Florida, Texas, Arizona will follow the direction of Virginia and it will be over for at least a generation.

The springs here are cool, wet, and usually beautiful. As you go into summer, it will get pretty dry and you’ll have temperatures in the 90s. Sometimes we do have cold winters, and sometimes a lot of snow. It’s been unusually cold here since November, and I woke up Christmas morning with 8 inches of snow on the ground. I fed the deer real well for a few days; I’d have 7 or 8 at a time. I put out corn every day for them, and they are entertaining.
Sounds great. We are a ski town and get lots of snow! Though this year has not been too bad so far. I used to live on a small ranch outside of town, with Elk and bears and wolves occasionally. It was awesome listening to the coyotes at night and seeing the elk move through doing their circuit. I sold that place and living in town sucks…BLM flags, rainbow flags….arrgh.

We all are different when it comes to handling traumas, and PTSD comes in different forms, for different people, for different reasons, war only being one of many traumas causing it.
The younger the trauma victim usually the worse the effect of the traumatic experience(s). Soft mold fare far worse than hard ones.
I have done a lot of research on PTSD to better understand myself, and find peace.
I know this for certain. Unless you are one of the 1% psychopaths – 1% sociopaths, with males being 3 times more common than females. (I served with a psychopsth only person I ever thought of murdering…to do the world a favor) God did not intend us to do what we do to one another in war, and no matter how naïve, pure, patriotic, or honorable your motives were…you will pay a price for the rest of your life for being in the horror and the gore.
I do not want to go back into the horror and the gore…maybe that is why I was grasping for another ‘doobie’ in Stucky’s cartoon???
As far as war PTSD (I suspect childhood abuse is even more traumatic but don’t know from personal experience thankfully) this is a good read, especially for my generation who survived the meat grinder, yet struggle to put it behind them.
This is another sad fact: Culture has an impact on these figures too, in the United States of America for example, there is an extra 1% of population made up of sociopaths due to societies conditioning.
PTSD is just a new name. It was shell shock in ww1 and battle fatigue in ww2. It has been around since war. War does bad things to men.

Without a doubt, but many of the well-researched and documented American war training changes the book above explains is how the military researched the known facts that many modern day 20th century grunts would simply avoid (in many ways) KILLING the enemy face to face.
The KILL ratio in arty, Airforce, Navy etc. DISTANCE KILLING has always been about the same of past wars…but the close in face to face Killing ratio in Nam was much, much higher than past wars…and why that was and what it did to significantly increase Battle Fatigue, Shell Shock, the 1,000 Yard Stare, suicides, nervous breakdowns, and all the other previous labels of PTSD is explained in On Killing.
The Military changed the training starting with Nam grunts to mold them to unhesitatingly KILL face to face. The military realized where their training had failed in past wars to push the average grunt to Kill average enemy grunts, and how the training for Nam dramatically increased the KILL rate in close in combat.
I can tell you this. In November of 1968 I was in Infantry Training Regiment (ITR) with the Marines…and called my Mother on her birthday from a pay phone…but could barely talk…I could only whisper…I had almost completely lost my voice screaming ‘KILL’.

I do not think being “nice” is an especially important thing. I do not have many family connections, either, and I count my close friends carefully. I have had to cut ties with some of both because I will not break bread with people too stupid to see what is in front of their faces.
Confrontation? During my career with the U.S. government I earned the disapproval and dislike of quite a few people because I did confront them. They were not doing their jobs, they held ignorant views on international affairs, and refused to understand our enemies. Many of these people held senior positions in the intelligence community and they did terrible damage to our country. The yes-men who gave Bush the “proof” for the Iraq War were among them. I am proud to say that many others came to me privately and thanked me for standing up to these idiots.
I do not want your “nice” relatives anywhere near me. They are not “good people”. Adults have certain responsibilities and if they shirk them – like refusing to comprehend the real world – they are useless and a threat to the really “good people”. I do indeed have contempt for goofballs like your California relatives. People like them will be largely responsible for the terrible events which will unfold in this country in the next few years.

I had a pretty long comment I was composing for this article. But in the process I went over to read the article by TMWNN. I decided to not post the comment, as I have done many times before. But then, thinking about what another commenter posted recently-that he was grateful to be part of this community-I decided to post this edited version as I too am grateful for this place and I’ve been coming here daily for the last 6 years. And I’m not sure any community can be a one way street.
The gist of the original comment was that I grew up in Massachusetts. In a family actively engaged in politics. My father, who was a high ranking Democrat political appointee, died when I was age 6. My mother, also active in the Dem party, married a blue blood Republican from the North Shore (Rockefeller country). I saw up close all the shenanigans, corruption, cronyism, etc.
Think about the fact that at least 3 of the Speakers of the House in MA did time. And another who served as speaker for many years was Whitey Bulger’s brother!!!
The point I was making in the original comment was that governing and enforcement of rules and laws is much harder in typically corrupt blue states. MA was always blue. We didn’t go from having very little paperwork to suddenly needing a lawyer if all you wanted to do was open a business.
So for me, having seen all the nonsense from both sides, I did not want to get involved in any system where I did not control my own fate. I went into business for myself at age 20 and never looked back. Leaving out a bunch of details from the original comment I will say that noncompliance is not hard.
I now live in NH. HSF once described his trip to the Capital in Concord, NH. I don’t remember the specifics but if he was complaining about forms and fees and whatnot he might imagine what the same process involves in MA.
I have one sheet of paper on my desk which is already filled out. All I have to do is sign it and send it with a fee to NH Dept. of State. In the original comment I listed a number of things you can get away with not doing in MA because many systems are overburdened. Even if you are found out and they send someone to come after you they are lazy incompetent, fat bureaucrats who have a hard time getting out of the car. They don’t want more paperwork and will take the path of least resistance.
All that to say, whenever possible, DO NOT COMPLY.
I spent a lot of time in “red” states. The corruption I saw and know about at local levels is enormous. Local police, politicians, county clerks, justices of the peace, even ministers of the churches were corrupt. Red states are just as bad, make no mistake. But it seems more on locally center Ed, in my experience.
